One could easily argue Kraft has gone the "cheap" route when assembling this management team and coaching staff.
What the team still owes Bill has to be an influencing factor.
And Kraft no doubt wants to reestablish budgetary constraints and a separation of powers in sharp contrast to how Bill reigned.

Regardless......
In hindsight it seems that BB managed around krafts cheapness.

The defense will not be as good as last season. It will take a big step back. This is a game plan defense with role players and the person that made it work is no longer here.

Yes he did only an idiot would dispute that.

I have a theory that for every unspent cap dollar, Kraft gave Bill a % of the savings.
And in the rare year NE was up against the cap, Kraft recouped by selling $5 Solo cups of tap water at concessions.

I could be wrong

I've echoed the same thing this offseason that the defense is going to take a major step back because it was hanging on for dear life with Bill's scheme and coaching alone. The lack of talent clearly shows up when they play a team like the Cowboys, Chiefs, Dolphins, Bills or really any team that's .500 and above. In fact, both Ty Law and Rob Ninkovich have said this defense does not give any resistance to the good teams which has been an issue going on for 5 years now. Bill the GM used a lot of resources on the defense which hasn't produced any elite game changing talent. With Bill gone, Barmore possibly out the season and Judon traded, takes this defense from mediocre to bad. Those scores you provided, will be even worse with Mayo and Covington taking over.

Not to mention both the new HC and DC have never called a play in the NFL.

It wasn’t the cap, that was the compromise, BB got to spend to the cap but only with limited cash.

I fail to see where 4 wins come from. I would be shocked if they win more than 2!

I'm sure they will beat the Jets at least once, well because they are the Jets. But after that? Unless they face a few back up QBs, I can't see more than that.

Should have stocked up on talent in this last draft instead of drafting Vegetable Lasagna at #3. Either Alt or Harrison Jr, would have made much more sense, or take the Giants trade and really stock up.

Bet the farm on the under.

There was a brief discussion around here a while ago about Bill receiving a budget from Kraft that included the cap.

When Bill started in Cleveland in 1991 his team went 6-10. When he regained a HC job with the Pats in 2000 they went 5-11. I think we could give Mayo some time. He seems like a pretty bright young man and maybe he learned a few things along the way.

I'm still cautiously optimistic about the over.

Bet the farm on the under.
Your posts clearly reflect the conflict between the potential of a complete reboot vs the reality of a rookie coach depending on a number of unproven players. Embrace the optimism while you can, there is no up side declaring the season a failure after the first preseason game. 2000 all over again, LOL

I bet the over. For me it's a no loose bet, Pats go over and I win a little cash and if they go under we are looking at a top 10 pick.

Cowboys were #1 in the NFL in scoring. Of the 38 they gave up in that game, two TDs were scored on defensive touchdowns.

MIA was 2nd in the NFL in scoring and you're including a game where they gave up 24 points which really isn't that bad in today's NFL.

I'm not saying he had them playing like the 85 Bears, but he's consistently managed to make that unit respectable enough to hang in a decent amount of games. Particularly last year where out of 13 losses, 8 were 1 score and most were laughably low scoring results overall. Give the (lukewarm) credit where it's due lol

Credit to BB for the selflessness then because he consistently spent up to the cap despite this made up rumored incentive not to. They didn't borrow cap from future seasons for a short window like a lot of other teams do, but over 24 years that evens out.

Mostert rushed for over 6 YPC and Waddle averaged 20 yards a catch that's pretty bad IMO, it's why I included that game.
As has been the case the last few years the defense has no problem stopping weak offenses but they can't compete against good offenses.

I think you're exaggerating to say "can't compete" is my point. Look, it hasn't been a dominant unit. Not saying they're championship caliber. You can see their shortcomings against the best offenses in the NFL. My point is just that on a week to week basis, even against the good teams, BB did a good enough job most of the time of gameplanning it to where it's a respectable effort that would give them a realistic chance of winning games if they had an offense playing at the same level. I'm saying no more, no less than that.

There's no way the Pats win more games this season than in 2023 with Barmore gone, Judon possibly traded and an arguably worse roster than last season with a worse coaching staff. That 4 win season would've dropped to at least 3 had Rodgers played.

The difference between Bill and Mayo is that Bill had expectations to get the team back to the playoffs in 2000. The team massively regressed which was why the pressure was on in 2001. Mayo just needs to look competent and will exceed expectations if he pulls at least 5 wins out of his ass. If he does worse than Bill in 2023, media and fans will also want him gone.

This is a 2-4 win roster.
