Plus, the defense played fairly well over the last year without either Judson or Gonzalez. How does it get worse if both are back?
Judon is getting old.

Gonzalez will be a star eventually.

When our OT's become a competent unit, we will have the talent of a contender for the playoffs, needing only that the team learns the Offense and is on the same page, and of course avoids 2023's level of injuries.
A lot will have to go right for them to be a playoff team, a lot more than just the tackles being competent. And championship teams are often dominant, competent means "just able to get by." They'll need good play, execution and relative health everywhere. There's a lot of rookies and young players that have to prove themselves beyond just the tackles. The coaches will have to prove themselves as well.

Judon had 4 sacks through 2 1/2 games last year, if he got old... he wasn't showing it. A torn pec can happen to a young man.

Gonzalez proved he was a star when he held Tyreek to his lowest output of the season. Now he just needs to stay healthy and on the same trajectory.

The patriots front office decided in February that this was going to be a throw away year. They are planning to revive the franchise by
1. Aiming for high draft picks in 25 to "restock the empty cubbard"
2. Give lots of playing time to their youngest players
3. Sit out on free agency in 24
4. Accept a very weak roster this year
5. Acknowledge that they were not going to compete in a serious way this year.

Good for the long term , terrible for the short term.
So its not surprising their roster talent is rated as dead last.
It is part of the plan and a result of BB and his 5-6 years of complete roster mismanagement.

Things will start to turn around for the 25-26 season.

So its not surprising their roster talent is rated as dead last,
Their ranking is suspect at best since they said the Pats D was league-average last year and ignore a lot of reasons (mainly players returning from injury) in their rating.

Gronk is qualified to rate the 3 stooges with Moe, Larry and Curly vs Moe, Larry and Shemp.
Oh you mean the all- pro future, HOF, superbowl champion gronk?

Agree. Even hurts was praising gonzo, saying the kid was going to be a star in the league. I don't think people understand enough just how good this defense is in 2024 NFL standards.. they get after the passer, they stop the run, they hold teams in the red area. Mayo should put gonzo on Higgins, double chase with Austin and a S.. make burrow the check down king.

So he can be protected against what might become a season-long turnstile at LT.
I believe Wallace is the LT.. in the AVP offense what he does his play to the offenses strengths, and cover up the deficiency by the zone running and blocking schemes.. as great a player as nick chubb is.. AVPs offense helped him tremendously. People say JB is the starter and I'm not against it.. however what Mayo's preaching is competition.. it's an oxymoron if Drake wins the Job but he has to sit. In my opinion it would send the wrong message to the players.

What's going to help this team is the uncertainty.. no coach knows what a Jerod mayo team is yet, what the 2024 patriots are.. they just need to put a watchable, competitive offense out there this season.

Yes.. meaning in general... if Drake plays well.. with this defense we should become a contender.. it's all about Drake.. the haters are going to hate.. we've been hated on since the 01 championship.. I'm actually excited about the future of this team.

Appreciate the optimism but they aren’t going to contend this season. And Drake Maye should be on the bench until their offensive line can protect the QB and run the ball effectively. Sending hiM out there in a desperate attempt to get wins this season is the worst thing they could do.

Well I understand your point. But coaches coaches to win games, and grow players. If drakes the starter it wouldn't necessarily be a desperate attempt he's out there because he's earned it! Just like CJ earned the job in Houston. Davis mills was told he was the starter and CJ won the job. Mayo's preaching competition at each and every position. I have no problem if Brissett is playing this season. However I just don't think it's going to go how people assume.

We drafted Drake for a reason. Of course let him develop, and When he's ready absolutely he should be starting if he's earned the job. I just think alot of it goes back to how the situation with Mac happened. That was self inflicted!

I personally don't see it as an issue and Maye is way more suited to handling that than Jacoby:

-Have been worse lines with top drafted QB's, can't find anywhere that suggests that matters to their development or injury status at all.
-You can't hit a QB today like you used to.
-He had free runner after free runner at UNC, he's used to having bad blocking, still puts up numbers
-If the LT is that bad, use the TE to chip, use the RB to double team, there are ways to minimize that if it's that bad.
-Thye are planning on a run first, paly action team which helps minimize pass rushers
-The idea is to put the best player out there, that's Maye, in addition, the best player with a weak Tackle would be a guy that can run/scramble, stay in and take a hit and deliver a great pass, that's Maye not Jacoby.
-Best way to develop a top prospect QB is to play them

I am hoping he does not play at all. I really think it will help him in the long run to sit, correct his mechanics, and just learn pro football...

I have tabbed us to win 2 games this season... I really think its going to be a tough year... you said it in a previous post losing BB will have an impact on the D... the loss of the institutional knowledge he had is really going to be felt while the coaching staff gains experience... with that said, I think the Panthers have to worst roster in the league... not sold on Bryce Young, and they really mirror the Patriots with a lack of talent... i just happen to think we outpace them in the defensive side of the ball, giving us a step up over them...
Loosing the BB from 2000- 2021.. yeah that version of him absolutely it's a loss.. but not a total loss. All coaches, even legends like bill when it's near the end they loose a step like players do of course. The Bill the last 2 seasons was a deteriorating version of the former. Of course bill has forgotten more football than one can every learn. But anyways my point being change was needed. There is no way on God's green earth we are winning merely 2 games.. it's just inconceivable to me. Call me optimistic but I believe we are going to suprise alot of people.. Josh Allen would love to have this elite defense, burrow would too! Drake has one, and Brissett can borrow the car until Drake passes his road test!

Preach!! In the beginning I was in the camp of sitting Drake. The more I've seen him grow and the more I hear about his progress from the team the more I believe he will start. People assume becuase Brissett is here and making the salary that he's hear to start. He's here to mentor Drake and start if needed! I under there will be some who disagree and that's fine. This is just my opinion. You make perfect points. If Mayo is preaching competition and maye wins how do you not start him? CJ stroud was told he'd have to sit behind mills.. he blew him out the water in camp.

Injuries and coaching.
The biggest question is coaching, does losing one of the greatest defensive coaches in history cause a drop off in defense? No easy answer for that. They have a lot of continuity on that side in players and coaches, but we just don't know the answer to whether these coaches are good enough or not. I THINK they will be fine and be top 10, possibly top 5 defense, but maybe the coaches are not great and get exposed.
IMO, That's the biggest question mark on the defense,

I'd also say they signed Jacoby March 11, at that point Jayden Daniels was just as likely as Drake Maye to be the pick, would they have sat a 5 year starter that's almost 24 years old to play Jacoby? No!
The idea Jacoby was signed "to be the starter" has lots of caveats. He was signed as insurance if the top pick was not ready to play day 1. Once it became Maye everyone just changed it to Jacoby was signed to mentor Maye because Maye is "raw". But what if Maye is "Not raw".

Am referring to Bill as a defensive coach, and the knowledge base he draws from... It has nothing to do with "needing change". That is a net loss for this team.

As for the win/loss record, we will see. This team is just not prepped to win even half of their games.

And its Losing - as in lose the extra o ... sorry pet peeve.

You mentioned the loss of bill no? He was the HC as well as his defense being ran.. so I felt the need to comment on that in my post to you. It has every bit of needing change... all organizations go through it Pape.. I'm not trying to argue, or say your opinion is wrong at all my friend. That's your opinion and your entitled to it. We just don't know.. honestly.. week 1, and beyond will tell us all alot.
