DRAFT 2024 4th Round Pick - WR Javon Baker

He's only a deep threat if he's getting open. He's been the invisible man for 2 years which demonstrates that's he not.

Obviously we're going to give him a good look in training camp first before getting rid of him.

But I don't have any faith in his ability at this point in time.

He needs to show it to us on the field before anyone can declare him a 'deep threat'.

I agree but Mac was his QB so there was no threat of a deep pass unless Mac had 4 or 5 secs. With Maye it should be different. Thornton can fly and Maye can out throw him. That changes the dynamic if Thornton has learned anything.

You're asking me where are all our deep threats? And I'm telling you the guy who constructed the team the past 10 years sucked donkey balls at finding deep threats.

That's why we're at SQUARE ONE now.

If you want to blame anyone else for the state of the Patriots roster except the guy in charge of putting together that roster you're just barking at the moon instead of laying the blame where it belongs.

We just drafted two 4.5 sec 40 WRs so our deep threats are not going to improve anytime soon. The Chiefs drafted a guy that ran a 4.2 sec 40.

Tyquan will have a clean slate. He was used horribly his first two years - very N'Keal Harry esque with gadget plays. On the other hand, there were a couple times he slipped through the coverage with his speed, but dropped the passes. I'm hoping Van Pelt will use him differently.
Patriots rookie vows to make teams pay in profanity-laced tirade

Normally you’d roll your eyes but with the WR position I like a guy with confidence and a big ego. He’s clearly got a chip on his shoulders and I love that.
I don't think we've ever seen a Pats WR chirping like this. It's a better sign than not when a WR does this. Most of the elite WR's in the NFL want to you let you know who they are. Quiet guys like Harry was a red flag. The nail in the coffin he was a beta was when he told a reporter he didn't feel any pressure to produce as a 1st round pick. Bill should've traded his ass after that comment.

There’s a lot more to a deep threat than just how fast they ran in a straight line in the 40 yard dash. Many of the WR1s in the league have a 40 time similar or even slower than Polk and Baker. No reason one of them can’t become deep threats. They both were on their college teams.
They were not running against top corners every week in college. These guys will not force teams out of Cover 1.

Although he usually wins late in the route…

This whole 40 **** is blown way the hell out of proportion. Do you think every play is based off of 4.21 40 times?

Terrel Owens 4.45
Chad Johnson 4.57
Anquan Boldin 4.71
Larry Fitzgerald 4.63
Devonte Smith 4.54
AJ Brown 4.49
Jerry Rice 4.71
Brandon Lloyd 4.62
Tank Dell 4.49
Puka Nacua 4.57
Cooper Kupp 4.62
Julian Edelman 4.52
Wes Welker 4.65
Cee Dee Lamb 4.50
Stephon Diggs 4.46

Ja’Lynn Polk 4.52
Javon Baker 4.54

It helps to run 4.21 and have Mahomes throwing to you to be a deep threat. Not to mention a top 5 te of all time taking the pressure off. But you can still be a Fantastic player if you don’t. There’s other ways to create separation and be open. Worthy isn’t without his flaws either. He’s got 8 3/4 inch hands, he weighs between a 165 and 175 depending on if you measures him before or after his morning coffee. We’ll see if he has the functional strength at the next level?

Not taking anything away from X Worthy but John Ross ran a super 40 Time and haven't had a good NFL career. I think he retired now trying to make a NFL comeback it's not all about 40 times Reagor and Thornton showed us that.

JJ, TT and Reagor are gone imo and I loved Reagor coming out Boutte as well.

Pop
Bourne
Polk
Baker are locks rn
Love the competitive WR room guys like TT - Boutte and Reagor knows nothing is being handed to them there's always the Taxi squad. Side note if any of the Three shows something in AVP's Offense we'll eat Juju's terrible contract.

Baker - Polk - Pop Douglas and Bourne we are not carrying Six WR's Thornton is sweating like he needed to lose weight.

I agree with most of that. Why do people get upset if I point out we drafted two 4.5 sec 40 guys? We did. It is the truth. Your list proves the point, BTW. The guys you listed are not known for taking the top off the defense. Remember watching Edelman trying to get deep once in awhile? Clearly not Edelman's strength and he is faster than Polk or Baker. Harkening back to J Rice is not a comparison that is equivalent, the game has changed, it is a lot faster. I like Polk, but I worry Baker is a head case.

Maye to Thornton might be fun to watch. We have a 4.3 guy. Let's hope Thornton can do more than run straight. Maybe someone other than T Brown can get through to Thornton. I don't think anyone will play Cover 2 to defend Thornton, so he has his opportunity now.

I watched a bunch of his highlights. I like his confidence, competitiveness, size and hands. But, he looks slow, and he's going to look even slower in the NFL.

Unless Van Pelt can take the field and run routes for him it won’t make any difference.

Of course it will. Assuming Maye is a better QB than Mac, all of our receivers will look better.
