OT: Should the 49ers consider firing Shanahan for Belichick?

McCaffery was averaging 3.6 yrds per carry last night.

I'm not great with math... but that seems to me to be 10 yards every 3 downs.

Imagine if you did that so much it opened up the pass option.

How do these coaches make such dumb mistakes in the biggest games?

McCaffery had issues running between the guards but had much better success running outside. On the Niners last 3rd and three in regulation, SF should have run the toss sweep and let their best player try to get the first down, which would have won the game for them. Instead, they went with the pass, KC brought the house unblocked (was SF really not expecting pressure in that situation?) and Purdy essentially had to throw it away. Game. And not covering Kelce on 3rd and 10, instead going with the soft zone. Who thought that would work?

old guys can't "relate" to players though!!!
(you don't need to know the latest dance moves or pop bottles in da club. you just have to respect them and tell them the truth and help them get better imo)
They are ripping Fuzz Nuts Shanny taking the ball in OT after winning the toss. Even if Fuzz Nuts team scored a TD they dont win because the opponent gets the ball and now they know how many points are needed so they can call plays accordingly.

And, some of his players claimed that they did not know the current OT rules. Old out of touch Reid went over the new OT rules very first day of 2023 training camp.

Why? The 49'ers defense was not the problem. It was their offense not showing up. Bill hasn't had a good offense since 2017 at least. The defense can only be marginally better and Bill's not going to fix the offense.

The 49'ers problem is that they don't have an elite QB and they ran into Mahomes twice in the Super Bowl.
Bills offense was fine in 2018 and 2021. How? Because he had a QB who was functionally decent and a good OC

Kinda funny KC had more rushing yards than SF.

Kelce who looked to be shut down had 93 yards. Hardman 57 yards and a TD.

Samuel 3 - 33 yards
Kittle 2 - 4 yards
Aiyuk 3 - 49 yards

8 receptions for 96 yards 0 TDs.

Defense wins Championships.

One team finished third in the league in scoring, and the other has one of the top QBs ever.

You still have to get to the dance.

they dont need to fire Shanahan, but i think the world needs to stop thinking he is a genius. They prop him up to be this great coach, but continues to drop the ball

The young coaches always get schooled when going up against the old heads. It was a coaching master class by Reid. He stayed patient. Let SF make the coaching errors, while his players still had energy late in the game because they didn't lose their heads celebrating in the 1st half. The 9ers had no one like Chris Jones constantly disrupting throws to wide open receivers. The 9ers were spent.

Reid then had several killshots. He pulled out plays they hadn't run all year. And the shallow crossing route to Kelce was a killer for them. 3rd and long at your 38 and they pull out a super easy route to the TE, so surprising that no one covers him, he catches it 4 yards downfield, but runs it down to the 10! That was crazy. Just a moment of brilliance by Andy Reid.

The wisdom of the old heads is hard one and comes through many years of staying alive and building on their experience.

This is exactly the reason why, if I'm say Buffalo, I never get rid of McDermott until he sends them into the tank. Continuity and consistency matter. Shanahan's been at it a long time but it's clear he hasn't learned all the tricks yet.

I also think him blasting his defense last week backfired this week because he amped them up so badly they lost steam in the 2nd half.

Even so, if San Fran doesn't muff the punt, they probably win.

Brings them to the Big Dance but can’t get it done. He had to run CMC more. A lot of guys said that in the game thread.

There’s a monkey on his back going back to 28-3 Falcons.
And so, to try and exorcise the monkey, he did the exact same stupid ish he did in SB51?

I'm still left wondering how any defense can defend that final play under the current rules. Everyone knew the ball was going to Hardman and that he would be wide open and yet you just have to take it because covering Hardman means Mahomes can just run it in. Or maybe SF should have gone into a dime?

Purdy being only 6’1” and facing that tall Queefs DL was a factor.
Agree…there were some Zappy-esque moments for sure.

BUT…to me, overall game management was the real issue for the 9’ers. Needed to run more, and the players saying they didn’t understand the new OT rules was just a terrible look.

I thought the game was really lost in regulation when the Niners didn’t run it on third down to eat some clock prior to that FG.

Shany just seems to pee down his leg in big moments…i.e. 28-3.

The second half numbers in all three games he was calling plays have been awful.

BUT…that was Reid’s rep before KC and one Pat Mahomes. Wonder if Shany will do what Bill wouldn’t and admit that a great QB does matter in big games.

The KC defense held Miami, Buffalo and Baltimore to 10 points in the 2nd half of their playoff games.

D punches your ticket to the Super Bowl.

Well, not a muffed punt exactly, as the player didn't clear out of the way when he got the call to move. So, a bad ST mental error. The 9er returned did himself no favors either by trying to pick the ball up

BB would destroy the culture and togetherness of that team within the first 3 games. they would not even make the playoffs.
Shanahan is a great coach and the SB losses do not change that.

Belichick would have had SF knowing the OT rules by heart.

BB would have ran the ball down KCs gullet leaving them no time to tie the game in regulation.

Great coaches don't blow 28-3 leads and constantly mess up in the SB as HC.

Bill messed up in the Eagles SB. But he had 5 rings at the time.

Shanahan consistently messes up

Difference between a very good HC and elite one.

I think we know the answer to that already. Shanny blew a 10 point 4th quarter lead with Jimmy G as QB, one season later he trades 2 future first rounders plus his current pick to move up to get Trey Lance. Lance bombed but Shanahan was able to win with Purdy. He also tried getting Brady this past offseason. If he doesn’t think Purdy can continue to grow, I think he’ll swing for the fences again.

I like the way you think lol

I'd say right now Shanahan is in Dungy territory I wouldn't give up on him yet he might get over the top like Dungy eventually did.

Hahahahahahaha

The delusion of some people is breathtaking!
