DeMarcus Covington new DC

I'm just calling out the consistency of posters on here. For a few years, the talk was their coaching staff was small and aren't very good.

Now it's totally cool that Mayo and Covington are still here who are Bill disciples. History has shown us that Bill's assistants don't do well on their own, so not sure why posters are so cool with it now?

I agree that a change was needed, but Bill's influence is still in the building. If you're going to make a change, make a change.
This.

No sense to throw the baby out with the bath water though.

Considering how many people moaned about Bills coaching staff sucking and being one of the problems, it's interesting to see them basically just bring them all back and expecting better results.

I am eagerly looking forward to the Vegas win total for the 2024 Patriots

The same staff minus Bill Belichick does not give me that warm fuzzy feeling

Mayo, unlike Bill, understands that titles are valuable but don't cost anything. Investment bankers were the first to fully figure this out.

Expect a bunch of Assistant Head Coaches and the like. So Steve Belichick will get a nice new title and a change in roles, so not a demotion.

Pretty interesting to me to see the reactions from ex-players - those are all highly-informed comments:

Seems to be a lot of whining about Covington's hire, but if I remember correctly defense was not a major issue last year.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it..
If the OC is from within, then I will join in, but I doubt that will happen..

The market of coordinators and assistant coaches doesn't seem to be in a good moment for a total revamp so I understand some of these moves.

Sometimes you can change things without changing all people. I will give a vote of confidence.

Our D was good, so retaining and promoting Covington who will be familiar with the defense Mayo wants to run makes complete sense.

Now on O it’s a different story. We need to catch up with the rest of the league. Going outside the organization for new ideas makes sense for the O.

Let’s see how this plays out.

I thought about Brendan Daly for DC as well that KC D line has been excellent, and he coached here for a while.
Giants interviewijg him I think it would barbs great hire.

You hear nothing but good things from anyone who's worked with Covington, and the DL was arguably the most solid unit on the defense this year (which overall was pretty good as a whole). If anyone was going to be retained/promoted, it was him.

Where the changes need to come are on offense, at basically every position: OC, QB coach, WR coach, RB coach, and arguably most importantly OL coach. I would be surprised if anyone from the 2023 staff comes back on that side of the ball, especially now that O'Brien is gone.

Regardless, congrats to DeMarcus!

I disagree with this take a lot.

I didn’t see many people who were complaining about Bill the coach. It always was Bill the GM and Bill the CEO the problem.

The staff was small but didn’t see many people saying all the staff wasn’t very good. The offensive and special team stats wasn’t very good but the defensive staff was very good.

So I have 0 problem promoting coaches from that side of the ball. It’s clear to me that Mayo wants to go in another direction on offense and go closer to what the best teams are doing now.

I don’t understand why we can’t have the best of both world. Why should it be one or the other ?

Keep continuity on a top 10 defense and change the approach on ST and O where it’s not working seems a good plan to me.

Wait, I thought you were gone or out? Decided to stick around?

Exactly .... Oust the emperor and life as usual

Mayo counts as in house. If they bring back McDaniels I would count him too. I'm not gonna complain until I see how it works out but It's eye opening to me and not my preferred way to start our new chapter.

McDaniels just might be the best, most experienced OC candidate remaining who also has developed young QBs. Some good points made here:

15th in points, 7th in yards. That's the bar. Assuming you stop throwing pick 6s and have a healthy defense, doing nothing should improve both of those numbers.
And that was without two of their top players (Judon/Gonzales) for most of the season, They lost three games in a row giving up 10 or less points, first time that happened in the Super Bowl era... Problem wasn't the defense.... ( I know Capt obvious)- but those b*tching about defense coaches ignore the real problem..... offense and not so special teams.

I meant out as i don't believe in the plan and think it's doomed to fail, not out of rooting for the team.

I think the whole operation stunk and that includes front office, coaching staff, players and not cleaning house when they got rid of Bill is going to blow up in their faces and cause 2-3 years of suck before they do a real purging but we'll see.

I don't believe in Jerod Mayo because he wouldn't of even been a candidate if he never played for the team, i don't believe in the lack of clarity in the front office and what Jonathan Krafts role is, i believe this franchise is operating cheaply on the coaching staff front and will probably bring back Josh McDaniels as OC because someone else is paying him or Nick Caley because he's really another cheap Pats bobo but because he stood beside McVay for a year so it will appease some as a fresh offense.

And the only way out of the suck and everyone being fired in 3 years is lucking into a franchise quarterback with the 3rd pick.

I don't even trust the defense to be good because without Bill none of these defensive coaches have proven a thing.

Thanks for the Clarity.

I'm curious what happens with the Belichicks. Lazar doesn't seem hopeful by this interesting take.

Sounds like Steve is out?

When that baby is 4-13, you throw as much out as you can.

But we'll have to wait and see what happense. Defense was certainly our least worst area in 2023. It's the offense and special teams that were beyond awful. #32 ranked offense out of 32 teams says it all. The special teams was also woeful.

There are quite a few coaches that can be yeeted out of the building and it will end up addition by subtraction.
