2024 QB

I posted this on a main thread, but thought it was more applicable here:

Really interesting regarding Daniels' development this year using VR. The speeding up of the plays is something I'd totally do and am a huge fan of - like when I watch foreign language shows/movies in 1.25 to 1.5x speed so that when I listen to normal speech it sounds slow and easily comprehensible.

Macaluso pressed a specific play on the iPad, then said it aloud to Daniels: “Tree Right Hug Y Swift Iowa Cold Flash Z Stop.” Macaluso then selected a specific defense but did not inform Daniels of the defense he picked so he would have to react to coverage movement in real time. Daniels received the snap (virtually), and the technology forced him to read out the plan in 1.7 seconds — faster than game speed.
....
Daniels ramped up his usage of the technology to three times a week as the 2023 season progressed. Each week, Macaluso sent Krakau and Hartmann the call sheet, numerical data and film examples of LSU’s concepts, as well as examples of that week’s defense. Krakau and Hartmann added in the different stadiums with details down to the black and gold at Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Missouri, to the exact spot where the play clock would be located so that Daniels would not have to acclimate himself to it for the first time when he arrived.
...
“Look Jayden,” Marucci said, “You don’t have to make me feel better. I know you’ve done a lot with this. How much has this helped you with scanning the field? How much does this really impact the way you’re seeing it?”

Marucci’s hope was that Daniels’ response would be at least 5 percent. If we can get 5 percent more for a quarterback out of this, he thought, we’re doing pretty good.

Daniels pondered for a few seconds, then responded.

“Seventy-five to 80 percent,” Daniels said.

It's said that Maye has a two year wind up in short *very slow delivery* if a casual observer can see that what does that tell ya?? Also level of competition will have to be taken in account NC is up and coming but not among the Best in College Football.
Where is that report? I just watched a video highlighting a number of throws and it was highlighting the amazing "Aaron Roders" like quick release? And they highlighted a number of throws where he flicked it 20-30 yards downfield at the last second.
DraftBuzz puts his release in the 85 percentiles amongst all QB's.
Pro Football network says "Generates high-level velocity with effortless ease and a crisp, snappy release"

At this point I am leaning hard towards Daniels. I want to see them play with an athletic QB who can hurt teams with their legs. Unfortunately I am starting to think that he will end up being the first QB off the board. If they don’t take a QB with their top 5 pick then we are looking at 2 more years of this ****, and by then the defense could be weakening.

With where the Patriots are picking now they are very likely to have their pick of Maye or Daniels (although another Carolina win could bring Caleb WIlliams) into the discussion.

Things I want to prioritize in the next QB draft:
1. Big arm- for too long defenses haven't had to respect the deep pass and it's made it harder to get the receivers in space underneath
2. Get the ball out quick/create offense off script- The line needs to improve, but that's not happening immediately the next QB needs to be able to get the ball out quick, and evade rushers when the ball doesn't come out quick
3. Capable of being able to read the defense- Brady was the best to ever do it at identifying who would be open based on how the defense lined up. Coming out of school it was supposed to be Mac's strong suit too, he was ok his rookie year then got worse the last two years.

Are there any other things you are looking for in a QB? Which players do you think fit that criteria.

Thanks for the post. Much better than "I am warming up to .......". Great job.

I think you are right about reading defenses and I would add that he has to have guts (not @Guts).

Has to enjoy taking a hit. Has to be fearless and have no panic inside.

Has to be able to look off a safety. Has to be able to progress through reads.

Finally has to be very competitive demonstrated by never giving up and repeatedly having come back wins at the college level.

Good list but I'd add one more big thing:
WORK ETHIC!!
One of the biggest things that separated Brady and PManning from everyone else.
Watching film until your eyeballs fall out.
Working on your game 24/7 365.
Attention to the smallest details.
I haven't heard about ANY of the current so-called top qbs doing this anywhere close to what those 2 guys did.
And it shows.

They say Mac is the first one in and the last one out. Works his ass off. He is also not fearless.

Your comment about taking a hit really applies to Mac. He wasn't hit very much in college and he looks like he's afraid of getting hit every time he drops back. This year he seemed to be seeing ghosts, seeing pressure when it isn't there. Not stepping up into the pocket, trying to run at the earliest sense of pressure which just ends up in him running into worse pressure.

Daniels, Maye and Williams all are a lot more mobile than Mac so they should have less to fear in terms of being helpless to avoid the rush like Mac is.

In terms of guts and being fearless, I haven't watched enough college ball to know which of the prospect exhibit this. The mocks and scouting reports I follow sometimes have a difficult time identifying the intangibles.

Wouldn't surprise me if Jayden Daniels is pushing for the #1 overall. I see some flaws like his deep balls seem to hang a little maybe that can be corrected. He's throwing to a Elite WR who seems to be always open: there's no doubt about his running ability Daniels will be a dual threat. Body size will come into question that said IF he can stay healthy he looks like he'll be very good I really really like.
If Daniels was at least a solid 215 pounds at 6'4, I'd feel a lot better about him (would be even happier if he were 220-225), and with the same athletic ability. But, he seems like he has a lot of talent.

One unique thing with this Draft some of these QB except for the kid from Texas are coming out with their WR's. I know we won't be able to get Nabers but how about Daniels and his WR Brian Thomas jr. in the Second?? Scouts are saying Thomas jr. might be much better than regarded.

Am really hoping Williams declares, not exactly due to wanting him. But so that there will be plenty of QB options, even if we slip to 3-4. Biggest fear is falling to number 4, Williams stays at USC, and Maye/Daniels are swiped before we can pick.

Also why I hope Marvin Jr. declares as well. He's the one talent coming out that someone else in the top 3-4 will want to take, regardless of trade offers they receive from other teams looking to move up for a QB.

I would be happy with Daniels and Thomas Jr. In fact, this draft is loaded with potential #1 receivers. It's just a matter of whoever is picking the groceries can identify them. Rome Odunze, Xavier Leggette, Keon Coleman, Emeka Egbuka, are just a handful of those receivers that could be the type of players that Metcalf, Brown, Higgins, Samuel, and Pittman Jr, just to name a few, have become. And, those were 2nd round picks.

Yes Brother preach I was thinking the same thing and agree completely we want somebody else doing it and not the current guy. Side note that Ladd McConkey kid just screams Welker/ Edelman.

As for toughness, Daniels and Penix look like the toughest of the top qb prospects.
They're both skinny but tough. Also have frames capable of adding muscle.
You don't want them bulking up too much. Think Brady.

Penix Jr. would be my absolute last choice. However, Daniels, if he can even get up to just 215 (220 would be preferable), would be an excellent choice. I wouldn't discount McCarthy either (although I would want him to sit for his rookie season). Carson Beck would be a solid #3 QB with serious potential with the right coaching and building of offensive talent.

Penix Jr. would be my absolute last choice (only because of SERIOUS injury/durability concerns). Carson Beck would be a solid #3 QB with serious potential with the right coaching and building of offensive talent, but could be a #2 QB talent. I would take Penix Jr. only after the 4th round (though he won't fall that far), as a #3 or possible #2 QB). Regardless of even if they did draft "The Guy", I'd want them to sit their rookie season like Mahomes, until the rest of the offense is built up.

Why doesn't Drake Maye look tough?

Why doesn't Drake Maye look tough?
Yeah, I don't get that one either, when he runs he'll put his head down and attack, he will need to slide more to avoid some fumbles and avoid some big hits in the NFL.
Read the article with the headline "Drake Maye's toughness causes headache for Pitt" and you'll get a sense for his toughness.
