All conjecture-based opinion, nothing more. There isn't one iota of proof suggesting RKK -- a reputably hands-off owner -- ever would meddle to such an extent. This would make Jerry Jones blush.
Here's some alternative conjecture that makes just as much sense, if not more: BB had other OC options in line for 2022 after McDaniels left, possibly including BOB. When Plan A fell through and Plan B unexpectedly dropped out, BB was left scrambling. With the league year already under way he settled for in-house Plan C, Patricia, and crossed his fingers. We all remember the ballyhooed offensive "simplification." That was for Patricia, not the players.
Also remember the praise BB lavished on Mac going into 2022. Undoubtedly, that was tarnished by Mac's poor behavior and spotty performances as the season unfolded. HOWEVER, BB recognized Mac was thrust into a difficult spot navigating Patricia's botched system and deserved benefit of a doubt going into 2023 -- based largely on his potential shown in '21 under an accomplished OC.
With BOB finally freely available, the switch was made and BB helped his pal Patricia land elsewhere. Shared roots in the Alabama system enabled BOB to fashion a Mac-friendly offense with the goal of gauging his viability in the crucial third year. The system was an improvement but the offense stalled when injuries affected an already thin offensive roster needing OL help and upgraded skill players.
Despite the adversity and perhaps because of it, the Patriots learned what they needed this season about picking up Mac's option: He's incapable of putting the team on his shoulders and being a difference-maker. With all the necessary pieces in place around him he can function adequately but that falls short of defining a franchise quarterback.
