Bedard: Grier is next in line if Mac fails this week

I don't get all the hate for Zappe?

I mean Matt Patricia managed to make him work...

Is Zappe the QB-equivalent of Jakobi Meyers?
Heeeeyyyy - none of that line of thinking here.... Doesn't matter that Zappe dismantled a Browns team that destroyed Burrow's Benglas 2 weeks later.

My interpretation is that Zappe was drafted as a fit for the Patricia offense, and he worked. When they switched back to a more traditional Patriots offense with some Alabama concepts blended in to fit Mac, Zappe was not a good fit for the scheme. But Mac still sucks anyway, so it was pointless.

We should start Grier tbh.

Would really like to see Malik get a chance. Anyone but Mac.

People complain about excuses being made for Mac Jones. But fans been making excuses for Zappe since the bears game. I get it's mop up duty. But he has looked horrible Everytime he's stepped foot on the field since that bears game. Including all preseason.

If he showed any semblance of being serviceable he would be starting next week

Fans have really over hyped his 2 game stretch against 2 of the worst defenses. One where he only threw for 187 yards and 1 TD

In the record books as of now Zappe is 2-0 as a NFL Starter something to tell his grand kids hey I don't make the rules.

Some change-of-pace stuff with Malik would be interesting, maybe effective, but he can't be "the starter" yet.

My own view is that , given the c--p deal he has been handed by Bill, Mac is owed the rest of the season to show what he can do. We can forget about giving primacy to winning the game: this year's record is irrelevant, except re our draft position. Many, I understand, feel they know as much about Mac as they need to know. I understand that view.

As for Grier or some "veteran" castoff, why bother? There is NO chance such options can develop into the long-term starter.

TBH, I don't think it really matter who plays QB. This season is now 100% about next year and years following. I'd focus on depriving Bill of any and all GM responsibilities, asap, as in yesterday.

Play Zappe before the score is 31 - 0.

A football game is like boxing match where you set yourself up for later rounds.

If he doesn't have time to allow a play develop, you cannot be indecisive. And if anything, he is delivering the ball too early rather than too late.
On many plays he has time and is indecisive. I mean are you watching?

He's going harp on the OL until Kingdom come because every pass play in Rob's mind is a jail break it's never Mac. Hello @Rob0729 they got Mac a Real OC and a real OL-Coach it's time for Mac to give us something and not turnovers.

Lol what makes you think his head isn't on straight?
The mental part of his game is off.
It’s obvious to see. He plays like he has no idea what they are trying to accomplish on the play. He sees ghosts and acts like there is pressure when there isn’t at times. He can make up his mind whether he wants to run or not, every movement in the pocket is different from the last. His decision making is slow and a lot of his inaccuracy appears to be that he waits too long to pull the trigger then he is rushing the throw.
The brain part of his game has been bad. He looks as if every okay he runs was just drawn up in the huddle and he’s trying to figure out how it’s supposed to work. Even the pitch to Stevenson on the short yardage play, which is routine looked like it was improvised and never worked on by him. (And executed extremely well by the other 10)

The OL certainly isn’t helping him but there were many open receivers that he missed last Sunday.

Not for nothing but the Browns killed Burrow just 2 weeks later. CLE was 19th in opponent pts per game last year so hardly the worst.

I am sure BB and BOB are frustrated when they watch the tapes of him leaving plays out there on the field constantly. We are not a great Team by any stretch of the imagination but we should be more competitive we are 32nd on Offense for a reason.

Jesus, I am not using this to defend Mac. But the fact is this is arguably the worst o-line in the NFL. And Mac is making fast decisions. Many times too fast. At least in the last two weeks.

The point isn’t really about ranking the first 5 games, it’s about making corrections going forward. If miraculously everyone starts playing better tomorrow none of that matters except the record.
People here are so quick to act as if yet to be played games have already been decided basset upon already played games. Teams change dramatically within a season all the time.

Check down Mac the Defense will give him that every time especially with our slow Team. But it looks good on the completion stats budding Hofer there.

I don’t think he’s making fast decisions, I think he is panicking and chucking the ball to where he decided presbyopia without reading the coverage or making a solid decision. When your first read is the Z and you see ghosts and throw too early to the z when he isn’t open that’s not a quick decision that’s panic. The film reeks of it

Not sure you understand what a check down is.

More time than not players have to play better or get replaced.
