Patriots Player Departure Official 2023 Patriots Roster Cutdown Thread (final roster in opening post)

??? What's the story on Calvin Anderson.

I'm hoping he's placed on short-term IR (along with BoneyT, and possibly Reiffer & Onwenu) while he gets into football shape. We can't afford to have dudes who are Unfit for Duty clogging-up valuable roster space. He & Onwenu never should've been removed from their respective reserve lists in the first place; and I also wouldn't be surprised if McDermott works out an injury settlement with the team so he can try to play somewhere else this season.

Why would you place HEALTHY PLAYERS like Onwenu and Anderson on IR? All that does is set them back in terms of preparing for the season.

Thornton and Reiff, two guys we know ACTUALLY have injuries, are probably going to the IR at 4pm today. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats add a RB at that time.

The NICE thing is that the Patriots can claim someone off waivers and not have to make a decision until Noon Thursday.

Do waiver claims get announced at 12:00 PM today (8/30) or are they announced at 4:00 PM when teams can send players to the short-term IR?

it would be stupid to take him off NFI and then put him on IR.

NFL says “Players who begin the season on NFI (as of cutdowns to 53-man rosters) can be activated after the team has played its first four regular season games.”

About IR and the designated to return list, NFL says “Players must remain on this list for at least four games prior to returning to the active roster.”

So it’s six of one half dozen of the other. Except taking him off NFI used up a roster slot at cutdowns that would have been open if they just left him on NFI.

also, he has two weeks to get into “football shape” before the opener. If he is already in good shape that might be enough. And even if he takes four weeks to get into “football shape” he’ll ne available two weeks before he could come back from IR or NFI. I won’t be at all surprised if he plays against the Eagles in week 1.

Waiver claims get announced some time between 12 and 4. It varies on how long it takes the league to process them.

can you cite your evidence/sources for him not being in "football shape" ? or onwenu?

i expect them both to be in the lineup week 1

It's an odd take. Given the state of the OL I'll take two guys who aren't in football shape over the crap we've seen even if they have rotate for a few weeks.

I expect them both to play week 1 also.

and reading between lines on the anderson interview, he feels he's been doing what he can and is in shape, he gave credit to the strength & conditioning staff without saying "yeah, they've kept me in shape" haha

and owenu has been working, been back at practice already......they are OL, they'll be ready to go quickly

Ummm... Not having participated in ANY activities for the ENTIRETY of training camp?

Same with Onwenu too.

Onwenu has been participating for over a week now.
Anderson has been working with the trainers and staff regularly. You don't seem to comprehend that keeping them on PUP and NFI means they aren't practicing and getting ready for the season.

The hilarious thing is that you'd be WHINING that they were still on NFI and PUP if the Pats hadn't made the moves.

I'd be shocked if both are on the game-day active list by then.
You being shocked is a common occurrence despite your years on this board claiming the same thing.

There are more days between yesterday and the Eagles game than there were between the start of training camp and the Houston preseason game.

Anderson said he was working with the staff through this all and staying in shape. He's a vet.
Onwenu's been back for a few days, is an experienced vet who knows well the guys to his left, at least.

I don't see why neither would be ready to play at least some of that game. If a guy goes onto in-season IR for a few weeks, he's usually ready to get back in within a couple of weeks of call back

onwenu has been off the PUP for a week......he's been working and has been back practicing full......and there's 12 more days until the opener

anderson was back yesterday.....that gives him a full 2 weeks

players on the PUP list can participate, including working with the strength & conditioning staff, they just cannot practice.....onwenu at this point is a vet, other than working with the line as a unit, does he really need training camp? coming off ankle surgery, he's probably BETTER off staying away from practice, avoiding the chance of a freak re-injury, while working with the strength/conditioning/training staff.......pretty sure he'll be just fine and ready to go come sept 10

anderson is a bit of an unknown, as we do not know what his medical situation was......so there' so there's a plethora of possibilities......but i saw his workout videos from 7/7/23, and he looked pretty ready to go at that point.....but he ALSO could work with staff, and had this to say: “One thing about here is that you’ve got [strength and conditioning coach Moses Cabrera] and all these guys, they make sure you’re in shape. So, whatever you can do, at whatever stage you’re at, they’re gonna make sure you’re doing the maximum to make sure condition’s up. So, very happy and thankful for those guys,” Anderson said."......his timeline might be a little more in flux, especially since we don't know the extent of his illness and the effects on his conditioning - but he specifically credits the staff for "making sure he's in shape" and that they"make sure your doing the maximum to make sure condition's up" and talks about staying plugged in mentally........he gave the Belichickian answer and basically said he's not going to talk timeline (as it's not up to him), but basically said he's going to be ready to go......

we all know your agenda........but it is 100% clear that both will be ready to go before week 5, and honestly i expect week 1, so it's a no brainer as to why they have been removed from their respective lists......and it is 100% clear that both are needed on that OL, so it was also a no brainer to take them off their respective lists

basically, get a new act

And what "agenda" is that?
