(Edited Title:) Writer thinks Zappe is winning the QB "battle"?

And BB tried handing it to Zappe in the Bears game and Zappe took that opportunity and vomited all over himself vs the 32nd ranked defense.

If that’s what we have to look forward to with Zappe starting- no thanks. Gimme a good QB in the draft next April.
That Bears game shouldn't be an indictment of Zappe the Patriots Defense was torn new one by Fields who went on to lose Sixth straight after drubbing the Patriots.

That's sort of a valid point. I said at the time in the Game thread that night that we were witnessing a changing of the guard, with Zappe potentially seizing the full-time role. Had he gone on to rout the Bears that night, the likelihood of him remaining the starter was probably fairly high given the momentum it felt like he had after coming into the game. The fact he fizzled and they were shut out in that second half (and he was picked off twice) ended that. I'd be willing to bet he also knows it and it's probably privately driving him a little crazy.

Most likely if Mac is not the guy they don’t give him a year 5 and he is sent packing. Lots of talented QBs next draft to choose from. Will be hard to miss on a pick.
Well -- it's actually all too easy to miss on high QB picks. From the 2021 class, so far only Trevor Lawrence has proven himself as worth the pick.

Less of an indictment and more of a missed opportunity. That was his moment, and it just didn't work out.

The defense was trash and so was Zappe. Funny hearing the pink hats chanting his name quiet right down as Zappe passes were making divots in the turf. Exposed and we’ll see if he adjusts.

It's not like Mac played any better against them.

I disagree Ian: I couldn't see them giving up on Mac so soon now this year is a different story if he struggles.

True, but Mac couldn't move that night and it was obvious. It's a little odd to start a guy coming off a high ankle sprain on a cold, wet night on that turf, especially knowing he wasn't 100%. Again, Belichick should never have started him to begin with.

People were grabbing their torch and pitch forks when Mac was in there.

For the record the Loss in on Mac he started.

I don't agree - had Zappe gone out and put up 30+ after the way Mac played, I absolutely believe Zappe would have remained the starter. Belichick would have then had the opposite issue of explaining to his players why he wasn't playing Zappe, especially following every loss where Mac didn't play well. There have already been reports this offseason that there was a divide in the locker room as it was.

OK. That's a technicality. They didn't score a single point in the second half, so it sort of doesn't matter. I've already said it's a missed opportunity because I absolutely believe had he played better, we'd probably be having a different conversation right now. I truly believe that - and as I mentioned - I said that in the moment.

Well Zappe did give us a slight alright short lead and the Pats Defense couldn't stop the mobile Fields a pattern for this Defense.

I know you love the kid, and I like him also, but they didn't score a single point in the second half.

I think Fields showed why he was the Second overall pick in his Draft that night career night and game.

100%.

Bill also handled the whole thing poorly imo leading up to and after that game. I don’t get why he wouldn’t just commit to one guy and leave it instead of creating a dumb QB controversy.

Fields was the 10th pick in 2021. Zac Wilson was #2 and Trey Lance was #3. Both are now perma-benched.
