League approves new kickoff rule: FC inside 25 puts ball at 25

I'd think this was funny if it wasn't so TRUE

They also flipped Washington by basically asking them, "Hey you want to get your phoney baloney financed deal done, you'd better vote MY way.".

Now the league can punish teams by screwing with their schedules. It is getting harder and harder to root for this league every year.

NOW you can understand why I've been such a nut about this clown since 2006.As soon as he said he destroyed the tapes and then announced the penalty I KNEW he was dirty. I'm the son of one of the straightest state cops you could possibly imagine and I inherited his keen sense of corruption. NOW you know why I went crazy about Kensil and Deflategate. NO ONE ON PLANET EARTH quits his position as president of an NFL franchise (the Jets no less) and takes a job under Goodell's aegis. Please...and then Kensil disappears for two years on a secret mission in the far east per Goodell...after the whole sham is revealed. Jeezus...the Mortenson "cancer" episode was LUDICROUS when his report was revealed to be 100% phony baloney B.S.
Goodell finally got Brady and the Patriots out of his life's mission...and that is to be the master pimp for the 32 billionaire gluttons. Now we're seeing the rise of teams from every division every season with the REAL chance of winning...of course skewing the rules to favor the new age "mobile" QB's and neutering the classic NFL defense we all LOVED all our lives. That WWE .gif IS the reality today.

Well... Let's hope BB can figure out a way to take advantage of this rule... Exploit some loop hole or something... Then the NFL will drop it like a hot potato

On the plus side, Nick folk can probably extend his career into his 50s if short kick offs are no big deal anymore
New job opening on the Patriots website:

Decorated sniper needed. Duties may include blasting opposing players in the thigh with a rubber bullet, should they attempt to fair catch a kickoff. Bonus payments available for kill shot to a certain Ginger league official.

TERRIBLE rule! The way they keep messing with kickoffs they might as well just do away with them. Or do what the XFL is doing, that option doesn't look half bad.

makes sense for the NFL, after a TD they get a commercial break, PAT commercial break, and now a risk free, essential non-play, where they can throw in another commercial break. That's like 15 minute of commercials for essentially one real play.

It's getting to the point where I'd rather they just do this, it'd be more entertaining:

I had one of those as a kid. The players moved so randomly it never made much sense, sort of like Matt Patricia's offense. Maybe they should rename it Patricia Electric Football.

Unfortunately, the League is well aware that the people whining the loudest are still going to watch.

With how our special teams has performed lately this is a good thing for us.

I do feel like there is a limit, though, in terms of f'n with the game. Ask boxing, or baseball. It's not unfathomable to see a decline over the next decade!

Or soccer, amirite?

I certainly hope so.

I am waiting for the NFL to update the official rule book...

looking to see if they will remove the Drop Kick from the current Free Kick rule... I wonder of a drop kick can be used as a type of loophole on the kickoffs... if teams aren't expecting it, seems like it could provide a slight advantage by trying to force a return by guys who are set around the 25 yard line... just a theoretical exercise, not sure if it would actually be feasible...

I'm having a hard time being outraged about this. No disrespect meant to anyone who is, but I really don't care much about kickoffs, and I don't think this rule (on it's own) is going to change much at all. Most teams want their KR to return the kick if it's not in the end zone, so I doubt we see many of these fair catches. The only time this is going to come up is if the kick is high and the other team's return guy isn't likely to break one anyway.

Dan Connolly explains it best...

Corderelle Paterson also has a few poignant words of wisdom...

and Marcus Jones offered just a few thoughts on the matter last season...

For one, Connelly's KR was fielded just outside the 25, so this new rule wouldn't apply.

For the other two, which of those dynamic returners do you think would have fair caught the ball if they'd had the option? It's not an automatic FC. Both of those players would still have returned those kicks even with this rule, unless I'm missing something.
