Well, we invested a first round pick in Mac Jones. So, we need to give him every chance to succeed before deciding on the 5th year option. We did the same with Michel and Wynn...we didn't pick up the option for Michel after we knew we could find a similar back in the draft (Harris and Stevenson later on)...and we picked up Wynn's 5th year because he plays a valuable position where guys just don't grow on trees. Same deal with Mac...we gotta squeeze everything outta the tube there....we have to find out if he can be an elite QB in this league or not.....

If there’s any validity of this rumor some other team will be deciding on his 5th year option.

QB not only is supposed to be a leader of the team, he is de facto leader of the offense regardless of how he asserts himself assuming the leadership role.

How did Mac lead the team last year?

Mac’s leadership last year was counterproductive from the moment during training camp he decided he didn’t like the coaching setup. He is every bit as responsible for the on-field results as the coaches. He didn’t rally the troops to get the best performance from them. He didn’t motivate the OL to do better. Instead he sulked, and whined, and eventually called home to Alabama trying to get mama and papa to talk to his teacher and make him get better treatment.

Mac clearly did not take coaching well at all last year. That’s not all on the coaches.

That's the thing... it is on the coaches. It's the coaches job to reign players and get them to buy into the program. You can't do that, you failed as a coach. That's what seperated Belichick from other coaches who wanted to be hardasses but just pissed off players instead.

And frankly, when everyone else in the league could see what a mess the situation was a mile away, that ultimately roles up to Bill.

There's a lot of ground between the extremes of gullible and outright dismissive.

I won't lose sleep over dismissing this one under these circumstances.

We got Florio providing one unnamed source and not even characterizing them as "league insider" (i.e. agent) or "team executive".

I'd say odds are 5:1 in favor of this being totally made up by the source, or an exaggeration by the source, or Florio exaggerating what the source said.

If he had something more concrete, he'd have said so.

If true, BB has gone completely off the reservation. He runs the organization based on his own desires and emotions instead of what’s good for the team. We now have an owner who is feuding with the coach, and the coach is feuding with the first round quarterback. I never imagined this kind of dysfunction from this organization

Again, a LEADER would have found a much much better way to answer that and at least publicly support his player.

Let’s play a scenario out.
Mac reaches out to Bill after the reports Bill said everyone is competing for their job including Mac and Bailey.

Mac pleads with Bill that it’s unfair to hold anything last season against him and he deserves the respect a franchise QB should be given.

Bill scoffs and tells him to prove it or something worse Mac goes to agent and trade talks commence.

Belichick hired a QB coach to reign in Jones in 2022. The coach and the OC were failures.

As much as I will hold Mac accountable and don't disagree; Belichick created those circumstances. Players win games, coaches lose them.
