Malcolm Butler Says Super Bowl Benching Documentary/Book Coming

Butler himself said he wasn’t dialed in.
No he didn't.

"They gave up on me. ****. It is what it is. I don't know what it was. I guess I wasn't playing good or they didn't feel comfortable. I don't know. But I could have changed that game."

You can disagree with the decision all you want (although knowing the state of mind is someone benched for their state of mind would be helpful) but there is no reason to create conspiracy theories.
So you won't be watching the documentary or reading the book?

I'd say from here out, we should only be posting bogus reasons for the benching.

I will roll with: He got Linda drunk at a team function and banged her.
I said only rape or murder justified a benching but I will add this one too!

Amazing the prezles people will bend themselves into to justify the single dumbest coaching decision in the history of our team - maybe league.

We will never get a confirmation from the Patriots on why he was held out. So this book is essentially hearsay and nothing but a curiosity. Now if he reveals that he did something incredibly stupid and it was his fault....then I would be inclined to believe him.
How is the book hearsay when he's telling us himself why he was kept out? Hearsay means you heard from someone else not directly involved in the incident about an account of what happened.

I see that the BB apologists are already getting a head start on defending why we lost the Super Bowl due to BB's stubbornness. Uh huh. :haha:

If good people are being driven from the site (which I doubt) it's more likely because whenever the subject comes up some of the IBWTers want the discussion to go away, even though many others respectfully contribute to the discussion. I think @Wozzy is a great example of that.

Yes, QBs don't win games alone. They win with other players, not coaches.

This is outright moronic (aside from all the anti-BB/Brady honkdom B.S.). WHO DO YOU THINK CALLS PLAYS FOR QUARTERBACKS???

No he didn't say that

He most certainly did.

Butler went on to take the blame, saying he probably was not "locked in and focused 100 percent".

“I wasn’t feeling too well," he said. "I felt like that was kind of part of it. Not to blame anybody. I accept full responsibly for myself. I am not blaming the New England Patriots or no one. It could have been just me, you know. It could have been anything, but I was not feeling too well and the New England Patriots are all about doing their job and they want everybody locked in and focused 100 percent and that probably was not the case. I am glad to be a Tennessee Titan.”

Like I said, it could have been anything. One thing it wasn't was this BS discipline excuse you keep conjuring up.

The most probable reason was he had a virus or was experiencing the after effects of an unreported concussion and was covering for the NEP not reporting it. Which is this rumor...

“They did not coin it as a concussion, because they didn’t want to put him in the concussion protocol and leave it up to the league,” Dakota said. “He did not fly with the team. If you remember that week, there were reports he was sick. So they left him home. He then flew to the team late. They were hopeful they would be able to clear him by game time, and he was fine, able to go. They made a determination right near game time that he wasn’t right, but they sent him out there for one play, so he could get his game check.”

He most certainly did.

We also didn't get to see Malcolm practice all week, we knew he was sick, maybe he wasn't fully recovered and looked like dogshit in practice. Maybee BB wanted him to play and hoped was better, maybe he had some injury that hindered him being himself. Possible they put him in that one play to see how he'd do and didn't look like he was fully ready. So many other answers to the questions other than BB is a moron.

DMC said it was no secret MB wasn't going to start. Harmon said something similar.

...but then Eric Rowe said he was in complete shock. He didn't learn he was going to start until kickoff.

Who knows....

Wrong quote.

It won’t be a conspiracy theory, your take is.

I'll go with what Malcolm said right after the game. He said he could play and help the team win. You think he's writing a book about how he's totally responsible for the benching? Please.

And what did you think he would say about it when asked at his Titans press conference? Not really the spot to suddenly come clean on the situation.

And stop acting like you haven't heard the rumors and speculation about it being a discipline benching. Like I just pulled it out of the thin air.

And what would you expect him to say after the game? I sucked all week, good thing they kept me out I would have given up more points than the guys who played did. He's a competitive athlete, of course he going to say he thinks he could help; players want to play.

We got to see Bademosi, Richards and Rowe in the game. They definitely looked like dogshit. So how about this? Give your defensive snaps leader for the entire season a shot instead of sending that trash back on the field to get burnt over and over again.

He should have played. At least by halftime Belichick should have scrapped his plan of not playing Malcolm. 4th quarter? I don't know but the secondary was a hot mess from start to finish. Belichick should have put Malcolm in the game at some point at least.

This was probably the worst coaching decision in the history of the Super Bowl.

What are you disagreeing with @Tunescribe?

You think Bademosi, Richards and Rowe played well?

We have so many faux "experts" here who think they know enough from a fan's 30,000-ft. view to conclude (A) not playing Butler is why the Patriots lost and (B) BB had no good reason for benching him.

A few things:

(A) Malcolm Butler did not have a dominant season in 2017 and New England's pass defense sucked in general, ranking 30th out of 32 teams in yards allowed. That trend continued vs. Philly in the Super Bowl where the Patriots surrendered 374 passing yards yet had a pick while one of Foles' three touchdown passes should have been overturned. Perhaps the biggest shortcoming in that game was NOT who played corner and safety but the woeful lack of pressure up front. The Patriots registered ZERO SACKS while Foles had all day to throw. This notion that Butler would've made a decisive difference is questionable, given the absent pass rush and overall non-aggressive defensive game plan. EVEN THEN, New England's season-long formula for success almost pulled it out: ride the Brady-led offense, which out-gained the Eagles 618 yards to 538. And it almost worked. Had the one Philly non-touchdown catch been correctly overturned and/or Brady not been strip-sacked late (the Pats' only turnover), Butler's benching would've become a forgotten footnote.

(B) People can theorize, guess, draw conjecture, ***** and moan 'til the cows come home, but the simple fact remains that WE DO NOT KNOW why Butler was benched. There are just as many justifiable reasons being floated as bad ones, but all the hysterical negativity condemning BB's decision assumes Malcolm could have made THE difference -- far from a sure bet given the above. Part of me believes Butler is invested in stoking this thing for personal gain, we'll see what other shoes drop with the forthcoming book and documentary. He's been playing coy for a reason and never seemed terribly bright to begin with, at least IMO.

The bottom line for me in all this is I'm not sold on Butler's absence being the difference-maker in that game regardless of whether his benching was justified.

Belichick's consistency won Super Bowls. So play Butler, beat the Eagles, but if Belichick wasn't like this his entire career, we'd have more locker room issues like so many other teams have. Adalius and Randy Moss were shown the door. That means something.
