I’m coming around to not naming Mayo DC

His comments that he is “ready to be a HC in this league” tell me that a DC role would be very short term for him.

While I do feel Steve should be upgraded, having a guy for one year who is looking to leave isn’t ideal.

Kind of wish we could find a really good career DC type a la **** Lebeaux back in the day.

Wasn’t going to be a HC again, but fantastic DC.

If a coordinator runs a successful unit on a successful team, he's gonna get poached sooner rather than later based on recent history. That doesn't make Mayo unique. Even McDaniels left (or almost left) multiple times.

Really, the framing here should be that Steve Belichick should be named DC because he's uniquely unlikely to go to another team no matter how successful he is (probably due to an assumption he gets his dad's job one day). I don't really find that logic compelling though, I just want the defense to be good (which has been the case).

The act of officially naming someone the coordinator is also not as consequential as you seem to think it is. When the Patriots do that, it's usually just to put a label on the role the coach has already been fulfilling for a year or longer. There is a de facto DC on this team already, we just don't necessarily know who it is. That coach is just as likely to receive credit for the unit's success as he would have been with the DC title, and therefore just as likely to be poached.

The Pats should counter and name Mayo as assistant HC of the NEP, as he may be the best successor to BB... who I think will retire after this year.

It doesn’t even necessarily require success. As soon as Vrabel was named the Texans’ DC in 2017, he became a top candidate for a HC job in 2018, which is exactly what happened. It didn’t matter that they had the worst scoring defense in the league, sandwiched between 7th, 7th, 11th, 4th, and 19th place rankings with Crennel at DC in 2014-2016 and 2018-2019. (Yes, there were some injury issues in 2017. That’s still really bad.)

We may find out next year who is more responsible for the good and bad play by the defense. It looks like Steve Belichick will be the anointed DC with Mayo coaching somewhere else. I am just not sure how much this defense is Steve and how much is Jerod.

I still don't understand why we think Mayo would be the next great coach. Not saying he couldn't be, but! Who knows how much responsibility he has for the defense. If you don't give Steve credit, why would you give Mayo credit?

Josh should hire Steve for the Raiders DC. Get him away from BB and maybe he would get some credit on his own. Then you can have Mayo as DC.

Imagine if that the only reason we have a new OC is because Bill retire and Patricia is the new HC

I think the Pats would get draft comp if we’re a DC and got an HC job.

There are a lot of good DCs around. I think these days a good OC has more value.

Not giving someone the title that is owed to them to limit their future opportunities is petty, bad leadership and would breed resentment IMO.

I never really thought about it much until the exodus that followed McDaniels which I found odd. It's one thing to do that for a promotion but some of those were laterals not to mention those coaches probably had better opportunities here given the void created by his leaving.

You can spin it all you want but titles matter to most people. What if their pay is also not what it should be because of that? To me it feels like the title not being given is to protect his son. I know BB does not give coordinator titles for a year but I don't ever rememebr it being multiple years like on defense lately.

That's seemingly been an issue here for years. A lot of the guys who were here, when they left, it ended badly. And the list is long enough to feel like it wasn't a coincidence.

According to Mayo, Little Steven is the play caller and he does the coordinating. Whatever that means.

McVay and Shanahan have been bleeding coordinators for years so it's not unique to the Patriots.

I think Bill doesn't name coordinators to get around the Rooney rule. For him to name Little Steven DC, he would need to go through a process of interviewing several candidates for the position. Same thing applies for the OC. He can't just call Bob and hand him the job.

Mayo finds himself in competition to a degree with the HC's son. If I were him, I'd leave too, even if only to work as DC elsewhere. At least once he escapes the nepotism, he can feel he's got a fair shot based on merit of moving up. If he leaves, I won't blame him a bit. If anything, I'll blame Bill tbh.

That's what he is looking for a DC title. He knows that to become a HC he needs to get in the queue of OCs & DCs that are already ahead of him. He's not going to get it here, so he's gone. Can't blame him. It's the same reason Flores left.

Then that is just as bad. How is getting around a league rule, one that is meant to promote diversity, ok?

That said I thought it was just for HC?
