PA is to get ILBs to bite on the run. The Edge players don't have to hold back to set the edge. We see it every week (last night), where a QB runs a PA and as soon as he turns around he's got an edge rusher ready to sack him. Mac isn't athletic enough in the pocket to get out of it. He hates playing UC. He never played UC in college. Mac likes playing the shotgun. That's all he did in college.

BOTH meyers and Parker are out?

Never mind then, I might be a little bit bearish on the Pats then.

I doubt we see Parker again this season. Guys had about a thousand concussions

If Patricia calls more PA plays like a lot here want because it improves Mac's success; I expect that as soon as Mac turns around he'll find Maxx Crosby in his face. Pats don't have anyone at RT that can handle Crosby. Then, instead of blaming Patricia the OC, the usual suspects will blame the OL (Patricia) for Mac failing to perform UC. Maybe they get their wish and Mac plays more UC. But if he gets injured because of a brutal sack by Crosby and Zappe needs to take over, I don't want to hear that it was Patricia's fault.

Nice post. Well done. Of course Mac is not UC because he will get killed with his back to the ball. I am hopeful the Brown is better, and if Cajuste is back, maybe the OL is better this week and we can build on something for the last 4 games.

And is always injured somehow every year. Some guys are brittle for some reason. Hopefully Thornton steps in and makes Parker expendable.

Play action helps the line, not hurt it. You line Jones up under center and you run the play action (which the Pats are very effective at), it will slow down the rush. The whole purpose of play action is to make rushers bite on the run and hold up and coverage players to stop their pursuit of the receivers making receivers open quicker.

Running play action out of shotgun isn't nearly as effective.
Those are all the pluses you get by running a play action pass from under C. (plus a PAP keeps the LB's from dropping into underneath coverage which makes curls, crossers, and seam passes easier to complete) The lone negative, though a big one, is that in order to really sell the fake, the QB has to have his BACK to the LOS for a couple of steps, and then he has to return to the LOS and reset what has gone on while he played out his fake.

When the QB does that, he of course visualizes what he EXPECTS to see when he resets. Unfortunately often what he "expects" and what he "gets" are 2 different things, causing him to take a fraction longer to make his decision on where to go with the ball. There is often no time to look off S's or to get to your 3rd or 4th option. Ideally the QB comes out of his fake, and sets and throws the ball in rhythm

When you run an RPO kind of play action look, the QB has his eyes downfield the entire time, though the fake isn't as effective as the play action look from under C.

I personally LOVE play action passes from under C. BUT there is a risk/reward ratio that has to be considered. Is the risk of the QB with his back to play worth the reward of a more realistic fake, vs running it from shotgun and losing some of effectiveness of the fake vs having the QB with his eyes downfield the entire time?''

I'm sure the Pats have the same stats that Perry commented on.

Mills is the big loss, especially if Jack Jones doesn't play. You can expect at least 4 of the questionables will play, If I only get 4, then I would prioritized Cajuste, Jones, Meyers, and one of the RB's, but that's just me.

Josh Jacobs is dangerous.

The Bills and Bears ran the ball on this defense. The Vikings didnt need to. Nick Chubb almost averaged 5 YPC. The Jets lost their stud RB before playing NE.

This is true but let's not pretend the Pats have beaten a bunch of teams with >.500 records. They beat one team (Jets) twice and it took their QB gifting us 3 INTs and a miracle ST TD to do so.

Maybe we get the same in this game, a bunch of INTs or a ST/D TD. Anything is possible.
Real talk.

Respeck for the hood.

Using the same parameters, Jones’ 2020 campaign ranks first in accurate pass percentage on throws between one and nine yards (74.6%), first on throws of 10-19 yards (57.8%) and second on 20-plus yard throws (46.3%).

Every successful quarterback needs a No. 1 option, and Jones’ is senior wide receiver Devonta Smith. That quarterback-wide receiver duo has emerged as the best in the country — and possibly in the PFF College era (since 2014). While Jones' current PFF grade would be the highest of any college quarterback in a season since 2014, the same can be said about Smith, whose 94.9 PFF grade in 2020, if it stands, would be the highest ever given to a wide receiver in PFF College’s history.

The problem on our Patriots offense is NOT Mac Jones. He didn't suddenly turn into Shytbag Jones because of the pros. The CLEAR problem is BB's "middle class" drafting theory. Give Mac the protection up front he had at Bama and give him at least ONE REAL NUMBER ONE WR..and give him the same TE weapons enjoyed by KC and San Fran and Mac Jones can certainly perform up to the best QB in college football in 2020.
Look at our putrid offensive line...it's embarrassing. On
what team does a Cajuste even earn a roster spot? Yet we sit here and endure sub-par talent like this and outright overrated underperforming oft injured talent like Wynn et al.
Jakobi Meyers is a nice possession receiver even better suited with a TRUE #1 like Stefon Diggs. Crapcan the horrid hands of TE Jonnu Smith and get a Kelce or Kittle and Mac Jones will win and progress in this league.

This team needs a paradigm shift and I believe with BB running things, things will NOT change

Yea, Cajuste is the one Questionable we need back or McDermot will be getting flagged for holds on Crosby, if they call them (didn't against the Rams).

People keep harping about play action and that it was successful with Zappe but they don't use it with Mac. Not sure why folks don't consider perhaps they do that on purpose - likely because Mac prefers shotgun himself and also so that he can see the rush coming the whole time (and it IS coming, with the line in shambles the last few weeks).

From the Athletic this week:

"Trent Brown, who lost 12 pounds in the last two weeks while playing with the flu, on what it was like to play while that sick: "I feel like I only gave (myself the) option to be up and ready to play. And I also know that that particular week (in Week 13 against the Bills), we didn't have anybody else. We would have had a backup center playing left tackle, so I just had to try to gut through it for the team, and that's just that.""

I agree with your OL thoughts, but I STILL resist the need for the requirement of a 'true #1' WR to make a QB or offense tick. Brady had ONE true #1 WR for just 2.5 seasons (Randy Moss) and managed to do fairly well by most standards. What the Pats DID have over those 20 yrs of the Brady era were a bunch of dependable, very good WR's , heavy on the DEPENDABLE term. THAT is what a QB like Jones needs.

Now I certainly wouldn't throw away a "true #1" if he happened to end up here, but it would be a LUXURY not a requirement. Personally, given a choice, I'd rather have a all pro DLman, or a "true" shut down CB than a #1 WR.

But here's the thing, J, to win superbowls you need a VERY deep 53 man roster. One that is very good on BOTH sides of the ball. Have a dependable 90% FG kicker inside the 50 on ST's. You need to be at least +8 on TO's. You also need to be smart with penalties and have good luck with injuries to have a chance.

To me winning a superbowl is the hardest championship to win among the major sports. It's the only one with a one and done playoff format, so even one bad break or bounce of the ball can spell doom. Be it a missed call like in 2007 or a key injury (pick any post season Gronk doesn't play.).

QB's and WR's get all the credit or blame, yet if the OL sucks, then neither will succeed. We ALL know this to be true, but it rarely fits the narrative we need when using out of context stats.

Just look at the ones that seem to show conclusively that the Pats move the ball better in play action passes when Mac is under C.
But what is lost in this is what defenses the opponent is using, what personnel package we are going to see, or how the opponent will react to the look.

So unless you know all this when you use this stat, you DON'T have a true picture and what seems to be a no brainer conclusion, may NOT be a "no brainer" at all

Isaiah Wynn...unavailable again due to injury....big surprise. Overall his performance when available has been average at best and he has missed so much time with injury. Letting him go in free agency will be addition by subtraction.

You’re right that Jets are the only above .500 team the Pats beat. A bigger difference between the Pats and Raiders is the Pats only lost to one team under .500 (packers) where the Raiders lost to 5!

The Raiders have shown themselves completely capable of losing to bad teams, the Pats have taken care of business against bad teams.

They can for example jse Henry or a rb to chip crosby on some pass plays and help the protection
But Patricia is terrible o line coach so he probably leaves Henry alone on blocking Crosby with mcdermott missing his assignment

Happy Saturday to all, getting you ready for today:
