I am not willing to anoint Stevie the next great thing. As Parcells would say, he needs to get some pelts.

If they were committed to him, they could have given him a long-term deal, kept extending it, and pushing it out and doing those things. When Belichick decided it was the end, he didn't do that to minimize the financial damage. But he could have kept him here and pushed off the inevitable and made it work. He just decided not to and then did the things you mentioned.

I wish he'd stayed, and I thought at the time if it was going to happen, they were fortunate to at least have Mac land in their laps the way he did, especially after last season. However, none of us, myself included, probably saw what happened this nded early or traded

In terms of their reading the league tea leaves correctly, it's hard to argue since they were right and did it. In fact they damn near won 2. If they had then played the Brady extension game he would have been surrounded by an even worse team than the one he despised in '19. Teams just can't play the salary cap shell game with more than one player for long

The fact is we were so unbelievably spoiled through a 20 year run of constant contention that we'd forgotten how hard it is just to get to a Super Bowl, never mind win it. Look at the position the Rams and Bucs are now in from going all in just to get one ring. Hell, the Eagles haven't won a playoff game in 4 years and are two years removed from a 4-11-1 season and Roseman is widely held to be a great GM. As is John Schneider, yet Seattle hasn't gotten out of the divisional round since losing to the Pats in the SB. The cost of contention is high. So high that in the cap era only one team has managed to stay in the conversation for it for a 20 year span. New England deviated from what kept them there to go after a championship or two while the window was open. Now a large portion of the fandom is up in arms they did, forgetting why they did it and how it worked out.

Turns out that portion of the fan base really is as unappreciative and spoiled as other team's fans thought. That's the bad news, the good news is at least it's not all of us.

I am not saying that. I am saying there were a lot of games when we didnt do anything on offense. You on the other hand seem to dont want to acknowledge that and think even the games cited above were because brady was the QB which made the defense shutout the dolphins and giants.
MVP voting on the a team with the best record always goes to the QB by the mediots. Doesnt mean he was 2007 tom. Tom was MVP in the playoffs no doubt.

Heck, the Patriots played 3 of the top 10 offenses in NFL history in Super Bowls. They gave up a total of 40 points combined for all 3 games.

The notion that the AFC stunk is idiotic for 3 reasons:

1) The AFC was 5-4 in Super Bowls that didn't involve New England during the time period when NE won their 6.
2) The best team during this time period besides the Patriots themselves is clearly the Pittsburgh Steelers.
3) In order to win the Super Bowl, you have to beat the best of the NFC. So even if the AFC stinks, how does that matter?

I actually want to see us build into an occasional Super Bowl winner.

I don't want to become the Steelers, who are also always in contention but substandard when it comes to coaching. I want this team built through a core of drafted and UDFAs, with stars from other teams peppering the roster. I want to see them in the SB occasionally.

uh, during the Patriots dynasty, the Steelers went to 3 Super Bowls and won 2 of 'em. Now I don't like the Steelers, but I give credit where it is due.

No of course random games could be won with random quarterbacks or players...But to succeed consistently over 20 games, your quarterback play mostly needs to be elite, and it usually was. There are random games that they didnt need brady to win, 100%.

Sorry, Im confused mostly about this portion...How did they break their cap formula to contend in 2018? Which monster deals did they sign during that period that hindered them in 2020? The drafting is why the roster was thin, coming into the 2020s

In hindsight, yes they could've signed Brady and kept him. Easy to say when you are tearing down the team and rebuilding it, but you're shooting for 2022-2023-2024, when Brady would've been 45, 46, 47.

Back in 2019 when we had a poor offense for half the year, you'd have to have faith that Brady could hold on beyond age 42, 43 or 44. And faith also that he would stick it out despite pressures from family.

That's a lot to hang your hat on.

Not to mention that half the posters here bagging on Belichick for letting Brady go were saying, back in '19, that the Patriots should never have let Garoppolo go!

2018: Gronk, Brady, Gilmore, McCourty, Hightower, Mason, Cannon, Chung, Thuney

I think most people at the time didnt want Brady to go. I have said all along I would have shown Bill the door over Brady but that's just me. As for Garoppolo I think most people (including me) were mad that by all accounts, Bill didn't send him to the highest bidder and instead sent him to a friend's kid.

2018--Again, these players caused the patriots to run out of money? Even though they extended Chung and franchised Thuney and let Brady walk in 2020?
