By the numbers: Patricia's offense downright offensive

What was the main difference in key past Patriots teams? Not really the talent.
Depends on what teams you're talking about. 2003, 2004 and 2007 teams had the best rosters in the NFL. Although Bill's drafting was getting pretty bad from 2013-2017, even those rosters were still very good to among the best during that time which was mostly due to the foundation they laid prior (2008-2012 drafts).

Coaching is a big issue in NE, but the talent is arguably worse. This team currently does not have those foundational players you can build around the other teams had in the past. That's the main difference.

We need young innovators to take over this offense. Like OC Ben Johnson, top offense in the league. Or hopefully Sean McVay's OC. McVay's coaching tree. Hell... I'd even take McVay, but only after he figures out how to score more than 1 touchdown per game.

Patricia ain't going anywhere. And I think it's time for everyone to start settling down on this. Did you see the coaching on the other side of the field today? Have you seen what's going on in Denver? Half the league has coaching issues. We have a play caller with a bad rap and an unconventional switching sides of the ball but who's a been coaching well.

Good coaches develop plans to win the game ...
Some owners force their coaches to wow the fan base ...and for what.

Younger fans of the team did not experience the old NFL which was all about field position and possession.
Those games were all about the fight in the trenches .... the stars were these players.
Purple people eaters ... fearsome foursome ... Orange Crush - Killer B's ... Steel Curtain ... No Name Defense.
New York Sack Exchange ... Doomsday Defense ... I could go on ... many forums devoid of trench play discussion.

How many current NFL fans would enjoy Csonka and Kick or the Pony Express ... The Hogs ... ???
Maybe Air Coryell ... that was fun ... Locally in the Boston area ... the 4:00 game was great.

I used to love those games ... pure drama ... fight ... guts ... and will.
We have players like this on our team ... rarely discussed.

Today we won the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball = victory ... alas too boring for barcolounger Man Cave fans.

At the end of the year, Carolina will probably fire their head coach. I think he could be dynamite for us as an offensive coordinator.

Send Patricia back to the hole he lived in last year and send judge to coach special teams!

They clearly had to change their offensive philosophy. The question is what happened when Mac returns. Do they go to the aggressive offense of week 1-3?

I was being sarcastic. Ben Johnson was the top young gun on the other side of the field today.

I mentioned to some posters in this thread that McVay is actually pretty underwhelming. And they laughed. Well, we're 5 games in, and the guy can't score more than one TD per game.

I think you have to and just protect the ball a little better. I mean Agholar had another one today so it's more than just the aggressive style they were playing earlier. As much as I like this years version of Agholars compared to last he needs to protect the ball. Bourne had a bunch of boneheaded snaps himself today too.

Agree totally with this. I said it while watching the Super Bowl last year. I thought I was watching pattycake.

This aged really well

In all seriousness, I think Patricia has improved as a play caller in every game and that is all I wanted. A coach that has never functioned as an OC is going to struggle during game time the first couple/few games when things come up that he did not have a chance to game plan. That is nothing against Patricia, but just a fact. Everyone starts somewhere. Overall, I think he looked pretty good today (I was only able to watch 2nd half due to work). I am looking forward to seeing what he does against real competition like Bills, Bengals, etc. in the second half of the season.

Their head ... preparedness ... practicing for perfection is nearly non-existent ... but we need something for depth ... so.
Do they play for their brothers ... the team ... or for themselves and a paycheck?

We do need young creative minds to take over the offense. There's no doubt about that. You realize this O has beat the #16 seed in the AFC & the #15 in the NFC. IOW, practically the 2 worst teams in the NFL. These are the types of games we should easily win.

Anyway, great W today by Zappe the wunderkind.

1 freakin TD per game.

Zac Taylor embarrassed himself tonight.

One of the most disgraceful sequences you'll ever see. Game in the balance, 3 pts down, 4 straight idiotic plays.

No thanks, keep these twits.

I watched a bit of that game and I couldn't believe how BAD the Ram offense was and how BAD Stafford was. He reacted so poorly to the rush, like he was a rookie instead of a 12 year vet. In the end when they were driving for a must get score he missed 2 open receivers with passes that weren't even close. I was stunned!

They can't run the ball and even those they passed for just over 300 yds, a 125 of those yds came on 2 throws. No one else caught a pass that gained over 15 yds. Plus they rushed for 38 yds as an entire team. I know it was just one game and only about 15 minutes at that, but the regression of that offense was, like I said, startling.

Defense looked solid though, and Aaron Donald is STILL the best defensive player on the planet

I agree on Taylor but what are you talking about w/ 1 TD per game? The only team below w/o double digit TDs after 5 games and the lowest passing TDs is the Pats. What's your point?

Bills: 14 passing, 3 rushing TDs
Phins: 9 passing, 4 rushing TDs
Jets: 7 passing, 6 rushing TDs
Pats: 4 passing, 5 rushing TDs
Ravens: 12 passing, 3 rushing TDs
Chiefs: 11 passing, 4 rushing TDs
Chargers: 10 passing, 4 rushing TDs
Bengals: 9 passing, 2 rushing TDs
Packers: 8 passing, 3 rushing TDs
Vikings: 7 passing, 6 rushing TDs
Cardinals: 6 passing, 5 rushing TDs
49ers: 5 passing, 6 rushing TDs
Seahawks: 9 passing, 4 rushing TDs
Eagles: 4 passing, 12 rushing TDs

Nobody is going to blame Patricia for whatever happens with Zappe as QB. But fear not, Zappe will surprise you. Sure he'll make mistakes, but he won't quit. There's something about the kid that tells me he's more than capable to lead a come back victory. Zappe gets his first W tomorrow and bails Patricia out.
Nice foresight, but the win was more about the defensive score, winning the TO battle and the Lions going 0-6 on 4th down, and Stevenson's great individual efforts. Bailey's 180 yds were about what I hoped for. And while his comfort in the pocket was surprisingly good, he still was the beneficiary of a well scouted offensive plan and the return of Jacobi Meyers. I was surprise just how open most of the receivers seem to be. Not fitting it into tight windows open, but Julian Edelman open. That tells me great scheming was involved (and Jacobi looks quicker, don't you think?

We've scored more points on offense than the Rams!!! Everyone understands my point except you

With big time assists from one William Stephen Belichick.

Funny how this thread goes stone cold after one win.

The Pats offense is in a horrible situation. NO one expected Zappe to have to take an NFL snap this season. A great run game will be suffocated by 8 and 9 man fronts. He WILL make bad mistakes. And yet there will be those among you that will put ANY offensive failing at the feet of Matt Patricia simply because you are still pissed a Bill for Brady's leaving or only want to see the negative side of things

TL;DR: A large percentage of this board are butt hurt wankers who come here to b!tch and moan.
