2022 OL

We have a rookie LG, a second year RG, and two tackles that did a freaky friday. The OL will continue to get better and better as the year goes on.

PFF says Jones was pressured on 4 plays, and PFR says 5. Either way, a far cry from this “constant pressure” talk.

That's definitely less pressured plays than I thought. It seemed to me like as soon as there was one play that put the offense off schedule it ruined the drive. This offense doesn't have the enough ability to pick up chunk plays that they can survive 4/5 pressures, 3 turnovers, some penalities and negative runs.

Against Pittsburg they simply can't have the negative plays. It's hard to win games when the offense essentially needs to play mistake free football, but here we are.

I too didn’t get the sense Jones was under relentless pressure. The couple OL miscommunications were an issue, but it seemed that when they got hats on guys, both in the passing and running game, they held up pretty well.

They lost the game because of turnovers and the before half 4th-and-7 debacle.

Maybe the reason it felt like they were overmatched to some posters is because they were never able to get leverage in the game. They almost did on the opening drive, unfortunately the officials dropped the ball.

From that point forward they never led and were playing from behind. The TD to stretch it to 17-0 before the half really gave Miami leverage and limited what the Pats could do offensively. And on the flip side, Tua being able to play from ahead really helps him. If the Pats had scored on that opening drive and put game pressure on Tua, things could’ve ended up quite differently. 3rd down defense, too, needs to be sharper - get off the field earlier, better field position, more rest, better outcomes. Obviously they didn’t do that. Need to hope the officials do a better job, and the team itself needs to take better care of the ball.

I think that’s true. We had momentum and that blown call killed that. We didn’t recover sufficiently enough.

So, what is Billy Yates doing?
not a very good job?

The point is simple - Matt Patricia is the OLine coach. And the defacto OC. He shouldn't be doing both.

Yeah, but you're calling for Cole Popovich. He was actually made a co-coach, not even the top guy.

My point is that Billy Yates is there, he's older than Popovich, and actually has more experience, especially with the Patriots.

Don't understand what makes Popovich so much more desirable than Billy Yates.

Popovich landed a job at Troy. I don't even know what conference that team is in. Are they just an independent? No conference?

The thing I don’t understand with Popovich is how anyone actually knows how good he is.

People matter of factly state we had this great OL coach in Popovich, but there’s really no way to know that without working inside that building. The OL wasn’t great with him there in 2019; it was good for the first couple games of 2020 before slipping.

Maybe he was a good coach? Fair. He was definitely a great coach that we lost? Sounds like speculating with certainty, which is not possible.

That's because among our other problems (including bad LT/LG play), we lack mental toughness on the road.

I called for Cole Popovich? I don't remember that... but whatever... I would prefer him to Billy Yates... Or I would have liked to see him get the chance to take over the OLine...

What I did post about Popovich was that he left due to the NFL front office, and by inference that it was not the Patriots fault... He refused to get immunized as required by the League... his choice, not the Patriots... I do know rumor was BB wanted to keep him here...

and what makes Popovich a better replacement for Scar than Yates? the line play was better in 2020 (with Popovich/Bricillo) than it was in 2021 (Bricillo solo) and better than what we have seen in 2022 (Patricia/Yates)

and Troy is a Division 1 FBS team, in the Sun Belt Conference

Replacing Trent Brown with Herron is a must if he performs like he did in Miami. Maybe it was just the heat.
Jeez. Talk about overreaction. I don’t think anyone on here has ever said anything so positive about Herron before this. And Brown didn’t have a bad day,a part from getting incorrectly blamed for that strip sack scoop and score that wasn’t his fault.

I thought he had a lot of time.

This offense will improve massively as Mac settles in and reads defenses better.
It would help if his reading defenses better includes checking for impending blitzes so he can adjust protection and avoid gifting opponents any more TDs.

I thought it was you bringing up the loss of Popovich.

I disagree with you about 2020. I thought there was a jailbreak in pass protection that year. 2019 was even worse.

At the end of the day, this is a 4 year thing with the Patriots, where pass protection is a problem, but the running game is going well.

I know Cam Newton is not very good, but he was obliterated as a QB with the Patriots. No time to throw. I can't see how that year was seen as good.

Why would you prefer Popovich to Yates anyway? Based on what we've seen so far?

The running game is going well... But it is a passing league... And we now have a QB with back spasms because the line isn't picking up the blitz... So yeah I would

Even though the stats say he wasn't pressured very much?

That back spasm happened because a defender hit him way way late.

"4-slide-right means I want Sliders for lunch....got that?"

Then let Billy Yates cook, Matt! You already have other things on your mind, such as: Are those 4 sliders gonna be all beef or 2 beef & 2 chicken?
