So who do we think is going to take over this role for the team?

Its always been an important role to fill, and we've had some good players fill that spot... Kevin Faulk, James White, Danny Woodhead, Shane Vereen, heck even Dion Lewis for a season...

Ty Montgomery is supposed to be filling that role iirc... He hasn't hit the IR, so thats a good thing... and I see that he's travelling to Miami on Air Kraft One... so thats a positive.... though, ankle injuries can take an awfully long time to heal properly due to the way the joint is kinda cobbled together... Think BB is going to be keeping Ty in that role if he is capable?

Rhamondre Stevenson is a monster with soft hands... he could do really well in that spot, but he is too good to be relegated to limited use... Might work for a few games though, just because we have D. Harris...

JJ Taylor? Hes on the taxi squad... could be elevated for a few games while Ty Montgomery rounds himself out...

thoughts on who should fill this role?

My guess is Rham fills it until Ty gets back. If he traveled with the team and hasn’t been out on IR, can’t imagine him out for long.

the nature of Ty's injury makes me leery of him playing this week... it could turn a 6 week recovery period into an 6 month recovery if he is re-injured...

Rham makes the most sense I suppose... is the best back we have imo... but its also why I think they brought JJ Taylor back to the PS...

Just trying to work it all out...

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rham and Harris are the only rbs to dress until ty is back. With Rham handling 3rd down back duties

(Let's add Woodhead and Vareen to the OP's list of important third down backs).

Is the reliance/importance of the role a Patriots thing or a Tom Brady tendency? Or just football? Nobody besides TB12 seemed to depend on the third down back and slot/middle guys as much.

"Chipmunk offense" was briefly used as a pejorative for the Patriots. Inasmuch as one can make a pejorative out of something that kicks your ass week in and out.

I think if everyone is healthy, Rham is still going to get a healthy amount of 3rd down reps, especially in 3rd and less than 5. Assuming the reports about his improvement in the passing game are true, he's the best dual threat we have for those situations. Ty would be used for 3rd and long, and 2-minute situations where you know you're going to pass 99% of the time.

I don’t expect to see Ty this week. I think JJ will be elevated from the PS and Rham will be the de facto third down back.

As @jboston19 mentioned earlier in this thread, if Ty can't go this week, I think Rham will get called. An outside candidate will be JJ being called up from the practice squad to fill that role.

Guess that will be based on the number of roster spots open to elevate guys... Pretty sure Ferentz is going to be elevated, provide some depth for the O Line

I would've signed Duke Johnson LAST year, the day after James White was placed on IR, and not the older & more in-decline Ty Monty this year...
As rock & roll detective Ford Fairlaine would say: 3rd-Down RB case cuh-losed... Oh!

I think the good thing is that more than one back could perform that role in a game. Other more knowledgeable posters have mentioned in the past that when James White was on the field opposing teams knew there was a fair chance it was going to be a passing play. Now the team has more flexibility and the play wont be so obvious. I am looking forward to see how this works out.

I think the rb position and actually the offense in general is going to look must like 2010 where you had BJGE as the early down base offense back but Woodhead as the 3rd down back, but also the #2RB, plus the “passing game” and “hurry up” RB. With Harris in a role similar to BJGE and Stevenson similar to Woodhead.
I don’t expect a big role for Montgomery unless there are injuries.

had not considered that type of workload division

Give JJ Taylor more reps and a legit chance to fail.

3rd down passing RB is the perfect role for him. Get Taylor out in space where he can use his small size and shiftiness to get YAC.

If they were projecting a 6 week recovery period they would have placed him on IR, so we know they are projecting sooner than that. But this week seems unlikely. My guess is that the big guys is that the responsibilities are shared until someone emerges.

I agree; but if or when he's given another chance at meaningful snaps, he can't be leaving the ball on the ground...

I mentioned this recently but Rham was getting some 3rd down work all camp. I think he'll be RB1 by years end. Really hope he gets those looks. Bill spoke about his work and improvement in pass pro not too long ago I believe. He been getting looks though and has plenty of juice, elusiveness and power. I think he's the guy whether Ty is healthy or not. Rham is a freaking stud and might be our best player on offense.

yeah, i should have stated hypothetically... those numbers are just spitballs used to illustrate the idea... I absolutely have no idea how long it will take him to fully recover...
