Player Signing Patriots Practice Squad Updates

Beyond strength his speed and agility were top shelf for offensive linemen. I’m glad he made it through waivers.

Chasen Hinds is big but I saw nothing from him this preseason and he’s a blah athlete.
Before captain stone steals it I dub him Chasin Hiney lol

I’ve always wanted Bowden,
He could be a slimmer Cordarelle Patterson Deebo Samuel kind of gadget player.

Slimmer, smaller and slower with an attitude issue.

Yeah, I was disappointed that he didn't perform at the combine (injury?) or at his pro day (covid shut-down), because physically he's not impressive, so his workouts needed to be NFL-caliber... Based on that unknown, I would never have taken him ahead of Devin Duvernay & (don't even get me started on) Gabriel Davis... But this was Gruden & Mayock drafting here, so...

On further inspection, I agree Bowden is likely a guy they will want to keep on the practice squad at least until Thornton is back.

He is the type of player you can plug in late season because of injuries and get something.

And they have many spots.

There's a good chance they'll also view him as good competition for Nixon and Humphrey's.

They're taking a look, and the Miami connection helps, but there's a good chance he'll hang on the practice squad, if he shows something.

I think you're right on both accounts. He has information about the Dolphins and he could also turn out to be a contributor on the field at some point.

I think the Pats like having a "mobile QB" on the practice squad to mimic opposing QBs. I know Hoyer used to do that, but I am not sure if Hoyer or Zappe are as "mobile" as Bowden. Might be a good fit for the "practice" squad to mimic other teams' QBs for our defense to run after.

They could have IR'd Thornton after the initial cut, and claimed Bowden. Isn't that according to rules?

If so, we know at least a little of what they think of Bowden.

He's a guy on the practice squad fighting for his NFL life.

But, agreed, he could be a contributor down the road.

Every single draft report I saw was consistent with this one:
  • Not explosive in any aspect. Lacks the quickness to redirect and handle cut blocks. Unable to complete most combo blocks. Gets an initial shove at the line but doesn't move the second target. Poor body control and lacks accuracy blocking on the move.
  • Lacks lateral agility, flexibility and footwork to start on the outside in the NFL.
  • Not a natural knee-bender and gets too upright. Needs to play with better leverage and stay balanced through contact.
  • Very raw technique, playing with inconsistent hand placement fails to sustain blocks.
  • Struggles to get low enough to maintain leverage. Won't be able to cut more agile NFL linemen because he's not sudden and gathers before lunging.
Perhaps with coaching he'll improve a lot. We can hope.

Beyond never being able “to start on the outside in the NFL.” which I don’t get since he’s a Center, this assessment doesn’t gel with his preseason tape and athleticism. The guy is a really good athlete and really strong.

I think that the "signing players for inside info" angle is overblown. I remember when the Danny Woodhead signing, off the Jets roster, was supposed to be an intel move. It wasn't.

There is one tangible benefit. in the paranoia in the minds of the opponent, who scramble to change terminology. But it usually is driven by getting a player with a skill set that seems useful or developable.

Agree I don't think it happens often but since Miami has a new coach(s), it's somewhat unfamiliar territory. Some basic information would be helpful.

Every few years here I've had to post multiple examples of players talking about just that...sharing what they know about their previous team and then guess what we hear from the doubters here...crickets. Look it up yourselves...it happens.

Sure but a rook who got cut before the first game? No chance. In season with a veteran? Sure, maybe.

It's a first year coach coming from a different team.

Everything will be different, so why can't a rookie learn as much or almost as much?

Even with Bill, I bet a player would have a lot of information about new stuff this year.

Old information is available on tape. They would only want what's new.

Why couldn't a rookie provide insight into what they are telling the team this year?

That, and Bowden's technically not a rookie.

Sure, seems feasible.

I think BB likes Bowden as a versatile prospect and he can mimic Tua this week on the scout team. It's Bowden running play action (because he is a converted QB) and he can run play action like Tua because he was doing that for the last month with the Dolphins.

I think every team knows the other team's plays but practicing directly against someone running the plays quickly and accurately adds more effectiveness. It might help a lot.

This. Tua hasn’t been characterized as fantastically mobile or a great scrambler at Miami, but IMHO it was scheme plus being cautious because of that horrible hip injury which this year seems fully healed. I don’t know if Tua will be much more effective (although with his WR and OL additions it wouldn’t surprise me), and I don’t know if he will stay healthy (he certainly hasn’t so far) but I think you can bank it that he will be running and scrambling more this year, thus the utility of Bowden on the scout team.
