Patriots Training Camp- Wednesday August 24th

He absolutely did. And I thought it was a really poor choice of words, given his status and reputation

In Brazil, we have a saying "The 3 points at the begginning of a championship are worth the same as the 3 at the end". And these cases, there are 38 games, not 17 only.

Obviously I know that no one is 100% at the start of a regular season, anywhere, but ever since these words were uttered by BB, Ive seen how embedded it became for many people to say like it's a matter of fact, even local reporters. And I don't like it. To me, sounds presumptuous to act like 1/4th of the season is an "Extended Training camp". With Brady, you know, it was a lot easier to accept it in some way, bc he was that good of an Ace and Clutch artist. These ain't those days no more and even then I did not like the mentality
I don't think Bill meant that they are throwing away 4 games of the season. They still prepare as fully as they can and those are games that they try to win as much as any other. I think it's more referring to how long it takes the team to fully gel and to know what time of team you are. That takes longer than camp and you can see it in other teams too.

I'd like to add a few things about the OZ tweaks.. to help clarify:

A simple way to understand zone run blocking is that in zone blocking, you are attacking space, not players.

And I don't really like the term "outside zone" because it makes you think the play is going to go outside every single time and that's not the case. It's about stressing the defense horizontally. In many of those OZ schemes, you'll see cutback lanes being exploited. The success of a zone run ultimately depends on the ability of the RB to read and react quickly. But most of the pressure is on the OL to execute.

Now the issue with running the OZ or wide zone stuff is that it's its own system with its own language and verbiage. There is no mix and plug. There's no "we'll borrow this part and that part." If you want to be good at it, you have to be working on it all the time.

And then on top of that, you're going to add PA wrinkles, and such. It's a big transition to make. I'm fully expecting a slow start to this season.

Good stuff. So, in your opinion, when reporters are watching these practices: How easy is it to distinguish whether a broken OZ run is the fault of the o-line vs. the running back's vision? Like, would it be easy to mistakenly (from the outside) think the o-line isn't getting to their spots, when in reality the RB missed his cutback lane?

aww **** there's goes our first round pick in '23.

It's not. They do.
Seems like Jakobi Meyers worked really hard this offseason and his ceiling might be a really solid Possession WR in the mold of Anquan Boldin. I didn't think he could be best WR among this particular bunch ie...Parker and Agholor. It shows how much he has improved his overall game kudos I was really wrong about him and thought he had reached his ceiling glad he proved me wrong. :)

IMO, you can't really do that without access to coaches films... (having a overhead view and the ability to toggle back and forth through the same play to isolate where it broke down) which is why I don't really listen to any of that crap from sportswriters during preseason. The last preseason game and the first few season games is what will be telling in terms of what we need to work on.

I think if he put up Boldin's numbers in AZ we'd be doing cartwheels.

Lets hope Mac and the offensive consultants can figure out a way to dramatically improve Meyers' YAC because an offense whose #1 WR manages only 2.7 yds after catch on average is an offense with a very low ceiling.

I really dislike how dissipated and accepted this "Only gets real in October" mantra is

Lazar says don’t be surprised if it’s another preseason game full of backups. While I do think week 3 is still “dress rehearsal” week, it sounds like they accomplished that in practice yesterday.

During one of times where the Pats were a well established team with the same core of players, I remember a year where the goal was to win September, so BB does take the beginning of the seriously. The philosophy does not mean not to try to win. It means that it often takes time to assimilate new players, get everyone on the same page and learn what works and what does not. This year the team is changing coaches and introducing a number of new players so there is a lot going on. A bad practice or loss while things are getting sorted out is not the end of the world.

Nothing to disagree here. I wished this spirit would come back then. This year, specially, with all the turn-around and youngsters on the team, a slow start could be really dangerous

I know. But when your own coach goes out publicly and states, in a way, that September isnt as big as november/december(and we all know what that means too, i hope), it becomes very easy to rationalize not giving 100% early, or just not being 100% focused on doing "your job" as perfect as you can.

But Ill be the first to say it, I dont doubt or disagree with the bolded statement at all
