Why can't backups at positions from scrimmage also be starters on STs while learning/apprenticing those positions?
Do you think ST requires unique skills, or is just something any random player can plug into and be fine?

I’m starting to worry about Bourne. I thought he was the best receiver on the team last year and had high hopes for a breakout but it’s almost like he’s being phased out. I wonder if he’s the surprise odd man out at receiver.

You keep saying this, but how many of those players that have been cut, that you wanted to keep, ended up doing anything anyplace else? We have a tendency to overvalue our rookies and undervalue our starters.
Yeah I mention it roughly once around this time of year. IMO backups should have the opportunity to play special teams while also playing their part on offense or defense...and with training and practice they might excel on ST as well. Slater is one of the all-time greats on ST and Bethel and Cody are very good.

I wouldn’t worry I saw Bourne smiling and laughing on Mac Jones hip in the preseason game.

I don’t see any world where they move on from Bourne.
I agree they know what they have with him and now Parker.
Time to give reps for 3 4 and 5

You don't think special teams are important and think any player can do it. Got it!

Many are. You have 11 players on a special teams play, only a few are special teams only guys. You need a mix of the 2. I think BB strikes a perfect balance on that.

Many players cut by the Pats go on to have careers in the NFL. They're not stars but they're good enough to make other teams, just not good enough to make the Pats.

You know how I feel about this...not giving the younger guys that are backups an opportunity to play and grow is a mistake IMO. Also cutting potential future starters in favor of special teams only players is also a mistake IMO. I know we are in the minority...always have been.
I agree. This has to be seen as an experimental season and get the best players . Maybe next year get the special team players but this year allow them to grow. I just revisited our drafts from 2017 -2020. Boy !! Really heartbroken to see the number of duds. 2018 was a phenomenal year for 2nd rounders and we had duke dawson.

It's just unbelievable what we have been able to do with so much limited talent. What if the talent increases !!! Sky is the limit ...

But they do.
Last year the Patriots had 439 at plays.
439x11 = 4829 snaps for the team
4 “primary special teams guys” played 1347. (Slater, Davis, king, bethel)
K, P, LS and Gunner as return specialist played 692
That leaves 2790 or 6.4 of the 11 players out there being starters or backups.

I said "with training and practice they might excel on ST as well."
Well if their training and practice during training camp caused that they would be on the team.
Most end up on the practice squad any way.
I mean who are these players you feel got away and we should have sacrificed special teams play in order to keep them as a backup?

Jordan Richards should have been a special teams only player.

Remember the Anfernee Jennings block that was penalized and so called back a punt return touchdown?

That was explained as being illegal for being a block back towards one's own goal line with forcible contact. Vinovich "It was a block back towards his own end line, with forceable [sic] contact."

It was a ******** call.

For the non-K/Ps & -Returners, the only unique skill required is being crazy enough to initiate contact with an opponent after running 50 yards downfield as fast as one can...
