Patriots Training Camp- Thursday August 4th

This is how I have them stacked...

BIG WR (2) – DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne,
FAST WR (2) – Tyquan Thornton, Tre Nixon, Nelson Agholor (trade)
SLOT WR (1) – Kristian Wilkerson, Jakobi Meyers (trade)

There's always the possibility they keep 6, but I doubt it.

Wilkerson's hands are a stopper. Keep Agholor. Bourne and Nixon should be the slot guys. Get the ball to playmakers.

Meyers disrespect is one of the weirder things on this forum. He was covered by the likes of AJ Terrell, Stephon Gilmore & Xavien Howard on 3rd down. Teams knew he was their main threat to move the chains & by all accounts he’s leading camp again in receptions.

He’s a good WR who would be more efficient with threats on the outside to get defenses out of cover 1. I’d be surprised if they moved him.
Meyers definitely outperformed his undrafted status and earned a spot in 2019. Then, he was nice to have in 2020 when our otherwise best receiver was an inured and aging Edelman, as well as last year as the only guy with experience in the system.
But really, with the opportunity he has had here, any receiver with above average talent would have outproduced him. He's been a good piece for us when we desperately needed him to be, but we are no longer desparate for mediocre-average wr talent..

He played at the end of last year and has been catching a bunch of balls this camp... that's what gives me hope. If this is the case and his hands are still suspect they could play Nixon in the slot or keep Meyers and not skip a beat.

Patience, but looks like Agholor could have a good year
I liked him the first time I saw him after he was drafted by Philthydelphia. I have high hopes for him.

Matthew Slater might have been a great WR if he could catch the ball. Can't play WR in the NFL if you can't catch.

Nixon caught two TD's on one start at the end of last season. I suspect he earned that opportunity by being more consistent in practice and by playing gunner on special teams.

So far in practice it sounds like Wilkerson is lighting it up and catching everything thrown at him... I don't know what the coaches know, but that what it sounds like.

Keeping a guy who set the NFL record for starting a career with the most receptions without a TD sounds like as recipe for never being able to come from behind. Meyers is a big guy with excellent hands and knowledge of the offense but he can't get open in the red zone? He can get open vs soft zone coverage but that's it. Mac needs guys who can beat man coverage and/or score when they get the ball.

Keep Nixon and Wilkerson and dump Agholor and Meyers? Considering Parker’s injury history? That’s gonna be a no from me, dawg.

Exactly .. that's my point as well. How do you sell off your primary insurance i.e Meyers for an unproven commodity in Nixon /Wilkerson.

We might need to have Nixon get foxborough flu for first 7 games.wilkerson is PS mostly

He's projecting but yea....no way. 2023 maybe

They're not wrong.
People probably decided that (1) you cant give everybody free electricity through the air without effing up a century of petroleum product sales, and (b) you especially can't do it while simultaneously selling the idea of electricity going through the air as a death ray for the army. (Did I get that right?)

Did anyone expect anything different from BB....love it!!!

Sht just got real.

You gotta keep Bourne, Parker, Agholor, Thornton, and Meyers IMO. I think they probably carry Nixon too for 6. It's a lot of WRs, but Thornton is developing and Parker has durability concerns. Park Wilkerson on the PS and bring him up as/when necessary. Agholor will leave next year for a decent contract and Thornton will take over for him, and hopefully Nixon will be a bigger contributor. We'll see what happens with Meyers. Maybe he sticks around on a modest deal.

Guys we are talking about having some luxury depth at WR in some way? Its great to speculate and all and there seems to be some depth (not to mention 2 capable TEs) but odds are one of the 5 core WR players are going to get dinged up between now and week 1. This happens every year and it works itself out.

Meyers I like, he's a fine receiver but he's slow. If Nixon, Thornton and Wilkerson are firing on all cylinders they are simply better players and Meyers may think he's worth more than he really is.
I went through the current list of RBs, TEs, and WRs (including track star Slater), and Meyers has a faster 10yd split than all of them except 4:

Thornton
Strong
Wilkerson (Hand Time)
Parker

Last year, for electronic times (which excludes the faster CDavis, SWade, and KWilk), he had the 2nd fastest 10yd split out of all the Patriots (JCJ was the fastest). The dude is not slow, but he does have terrible top end speed. (Pleeeeaase work with a top track coach if you haven't yet... like Ty Law did with Bob Kersee.)

Given his ability to think like a QB, his intangibles are mostly upstairs - almost like the anti-Harry. That being said, I internally said goodbye to him right after we picked up Parker and Thornton, as I don't see the Pats' giving him the money he should be getting. Even Sanu got 5yr/32.5 with worse numbers (except a few more TDs obv) all the way back in 2016.

Edit: Man, this should've been his 3rd or 4th career TD by that point, but there were some misses... It is what it is. He beat a 1st team All Pro CB, but Pats couldn't give Mac 3 secs without holding:

Is Bill expecting the Raiders to turn off the AC inside their domed stadium for their 8:15PM game August 26?
Note: It's currently 93 degrees in Vegas right now at 7:12PM

I'm sorry he had only 2 TD's in those 3 years, which I believe is a record for inefficiency. Lots of empty yards and garbage time first downs.

Brisby had 10 TD's in his first 3 years.

Hernandez had 18 TD's

Gronkowski had 38 TD's

Gronkowski had more impactful games than Meyers' whole career.
1st year playing with a QB who wouldn't throw him the ball if he was the only WR on the field,, 2d year with Cam Newton, 3rd year with a rookie QB trying to find his way. Again, all he's done is get better each and every year.

Sounds to me like he's still dropping plenty of balls.
