Patriots Training Camp- Thursday August 4th

I think you underestimate how hard it is to find someone with even that level of competence. Personally, I could see Meyers tumbling down to WR4 and getting traded, but people here act like he's a JAG. JAGs don't produce WR2 (3 if you're being uncharitable) numbers consistently like Meyers has.

In fact, I would apply the JAG label to some of the guys who are expected by some to take Meyers' job. Wilkerson? Nixon? They're also 7th round picks/UDFA like Meyers, except the difference is they've shown nothing in real games whereas Meyers has shown quite a bit.
Tbh we are just going by TC hype and not real production.

Parker is one injury away . And then you have agholor who is a hit/miss. Bourne and Meyers are the only safety blankets .

If at all we need to trade Meyers/agholor we can do it only in mid of season not in start of season. Unless we get a real proven WR who performs for pats for a year , there is no way we can let go of Meyers unless you want to tank this season.

And looks like Meyers is still solid in TC .

Agreed. Meyers was 18th in the league in receptions and 33rd in yards, on a team that had the 7th fewest passing attempts last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see his numbers go down a bit with the new additions, but he was more productive than the majority of WR2's in the league last year. There could be a logjam at receiver this year, and Meyers might be the odd man out based on ceiling, but he definitely has value on this team.

Nice form. Finishes w/ body facing the throw. I've noticed that Allen seems to push off his right foot, probably to give ball more torque. Curious to see Mac leave his on the ground.

Nobody argued Meyers is a jag, just that he's not indispensable.

I have made a player comparison to Mohamed Sanu for Meyers since he became part of this team as an UDFA back in 2019 and since before I'd seen him play... based solely off athleticism. Meyers is a slot WR, he puts up slot WR numbers, his numbers match Sanu's career best numbers... I couldn't have been anymore spot on. He is what he is.

Fans put too much emphasis and importance on weapons, hell even QB they said we could go a decade before we find Tom Brady's replacement... it took all of one season and one draft pick. Now we have his replacement and potentially a quality backup in Zappe.

They knew Mac was the starting QB after that first joint practice with the Giants last off season.... we're not searching for unicorns here... just players. Meyers is in a contract year, he wants to get paid... nobody said Wilkerson has to be better, how about just as good? Thornton and Nixon's speed make them by default better players assuming they get it. So far in camp it looks like all three get it. Meyers is a decent player, he isn't Jerry Rice.

Last year, to my untrained eye, it looked like Mac was kicking that back foot up early in the throwing motion rather than driving off of it. Interesting to see it now stay on the ground. Maybe that was one of the points of focus, and after having worked on it, it stays on the ground on easier passes, but as he tries to generate more velocity it will leave the ground naturally after pushing off and generating force.

Is Sam Roberts healthy? Has there been any word on him?

Right now, I have the WR depth chart as follows:

Algholor - Deep threat on the outside.
Parker - Red zone/boundary receiver.
Bourne - Definitely a top 3 WR on this team.
Meyers - Our best WR the last two seasons, IMO.
Tyquan Thorton - Our speedy 2nd round rookie.
Tre Nixon - 2nd year speedster.
Kristian Wilkerson - Showed promise, but will be a victim of the numbers game, IMO.
Hamond/Humphrey/Perry - Camp fodder...maybe PS material.

Basically, we have 6 WR's that I like...but if we count Slater in this group...and even with us eliminating the FB slot, I think we are cutting/trading one of the top 6 guys above. I am sure it won't be Thorton, Parker, or Bourne. That leaves one of Algholor/Meyers/Nixon. And I like the idea of Algholor/Thorton/Nixon giving us depth at the deep threat WR position to consistently take the top off the D.

There are only so many positions available.

Saying "so and so" is one injury away can be said about all players at every position. It's a cop out.

Agholor has been practicing exceptionally well. Saying he's hit or miss considering without acknowledging that last year his QB was a rookie whom the Pats limited on deep passing is just being disingenuous.

Tre Nixon has been practicing well. He can line up both in the slot and outside. If coaches feel he can outpractices and outplays Agholor and/or Meyers that makes them expendable and the Pats will NEED to trade one of them.

I've mentioned several teams that could be looking for WR. And Arizona could be one with Marquise Brown just getting arrested and with Hopkins suspended for 6 games. Dallas and Atlanta are supposedly teams looking for a change amongst their WRs.

I've listed potential teams in the WR thread in the past.

FYI - Perry "retired" and is fulfilling his contractual obligations to the Navy

Montgomery has been taking reps at WR as well as LB. He could be in the 3rd down RB type and bring versatility there as well.

Some good observations from Zack Cox on today's practice. Arlington Hambright is a name to monitor, he seems to be a top interior line reserve at this point.

They mention Nixon beating Myles Bryant twice. Am I the only one who thinks this should be a given because of how Poorly Bryant played against Gabe Davis and McKenzie?

I want to see what Nixon can do against Butler, Mills or Mitchell. If he can move up and start beating them, that would be a real positive.

Yeah, fair point @DaBruinz. I am not high on Bryant based on his late season performance. In fact, with both Jones and Wade playing the slot, I think Bryant maybe on the outside looking in. We'll see though.

What happened to Tavai?
Knee/leg injury. Needed assistance walking off and immediately went to the blue tent for observations. No news yet.
