Content Post Words on things I watched, read & heard II

This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.
Yes, OL depth and CB.

And, I understand that team has addressed these positions, and will probably add another backup or two.
=================
I am also worried about the EDGE. Judon and ??? and ???. We need two players to step up. Hopefully, Uche is one.
Jack Jones is a little bit of gamble but he's really really talented. So I'm hoping he's up to the task. We need a real CB1 outside.

As for edge or rush if you know ball. I'm a little surprised but keep reminding myself we drafted Jennings, Perkins, obviously Uche even though I'm not sure he'll ever be a full time player for us. We could use Wise there depending on what we're doing. We might be happy or at least content there. We'll know a little more in a few weeks but it's definitely a minor concern.

I wouldn't pretend to know football, but I can follow people's footsteps. Dumping Wino is a sign, just as much as dumping Jak J was a sign. And then signing all of those safety/slot guys. It tells me that changes are coming at DB and at "edge".

But my lying eyes also tell me that the Pats were vulnerable to runs up the middle all season. I can only remember one 4th down stop -- to the hapless Falcons on a Thursday night. When opponents didn't get the yards on third-and-short (and mostly they did) they'd just try again on 4th down. That would have been my number one priority in the off-season.

Agreed. The lack of beef in the middle is puzzling.

The rest might work (faster, smaller, younger, less experienced guys on D), or might not, but I like that the Pats D is zigging and zagging. I assume 2022 will be a year for the D to grow, and 2023 will be a big step up via experience, FA signings, and the draft. We will need an OT next year, but otherwise I assume the draft is mostly D in 2023.

I'm fine with Wise in his role situations at DE.
---------------------------------
At EDGE/OLB, we have Judon, Uche, Perkins and Jennings, as you point out.

I think that we need at 3 effective players at this position. Does that sound right? I could still see us adding a player.

Randy also did it when CB's could be much more handsy.
I really couldn't imagine Randy Moss dropped into today's NFL with a good QB. Especially in an aggressive offense lol.

He'd have close to 200 TD in like 13 years if not for Oakland. I mean he ended up with like 159 with a few "down" relative to what he could do. If he was with a Favre or Warner (like most teams St Louis couldve had him with Bruce & Faulk ) or even Eli for 10-12 years he'd have the most TD's for a WR imo. Again in less than 15 years.

Just an amazing athlete. Chase & Jefferson look like the real deal though. Both have elite traits or qualities and have been making it happen.

Yea, ideally you'd like to have two solid full-time guys and a part-time menace like we were hoping with Uche.

Flowers is only 29 I believe and has been injured the last two years. He's got plenty left and makes the most sense bc Judon was bad against the run last year especially in the second half of the year.

Another guy I wouldn't complain about is Justin Houston.

Its a pet peeve of mine when people say "edge" bc those guys move around so I like to say "Rush" but it's a challenge Mike.

Yea if we have similar issues this year I fear for @captain stone 's health. It's definitely a concern. I'll be pissed for sure. I think the hope is year two for God, Barmore, hopefully Guy is a little more consistent.

I think the offense is really ready to roll. All eyes on the defense all summer mate.

I see your point. On the other hand, there are interior pass rush specialists, and Ninko, though he played on the edge, wasn't principally a pass rusher. But this is your thread, so your peeves should have the run of the place ...

More important is: "I think the offense is really ready to roll. " I'd like to get your reasons for that.

It seems to me that there are four bits to coaching an offense. (1) Designing the plays and filling out the playbook. (2) Teaching and practising the plays. (3) Designing a game plan for a particular game. (4) Calling plays and adjusting as a game unfolds.

All the attention has been on (4). It's been pointed out (rightly) that (2) can be broken up around individual coaches while (3) will be a collective effort with the Head Coach and the QB involved. But I'm concerned about (1)

All the signs are that the Pats are moving away from McDaniels' offense. There are bits of that that didn't thrill me (predictable battering-ram runs up the middle behind a fullback on first down) but a lot of things from the last two years (screens, sweeps, reverses, flea flickers, wide receiver passes, etc., etc.) were brilliantly designed and effective in making up for the fact that Jones was a rookie and Cam couldn't hit a barn door.

I hope the offense "ready to roll" but I'm absolutely not going to take my eyes off it! (Great that @patfanken will be there to be our eyes and ears!)

Cheers from the UK, old bean!

All the signs are that the Pats are moving away from McDaniels' offense.

Their ultra-complex system was optimized for Brady over the years. The system's clear demerit was that it made it harder to find and train WRs and to judge how well college WRs would fit into the system. There are a lot of agile/fast WRs, and a fair number of smart WRs, but not a lot that are both. By all accounts Belichick has been pushing in recent years to incorporate some of the Shanahan ideas into the system, and now is his chance. Patricia may have been a terrible head coach (as was McDaniels the first time around), but everyone says he is super-smart.

With three 4.4 speed WRs on the roster, the days of always running down the middle against a packed box are over. So the biggest impact of the speedsters might actually be on our running game. It's going to be a steady diet of play-action and RPO - just like what Mac did back in college.

Well, this is contradicted by Wozzy's claim that...

The Patriot's D ranked 1st in the entire NFL in fewest rushing TD's allowed, they ranked 5th in 3rd down percentage, 2nd in redzone percentage... they were good on short downs. The problem wasn't the big men in the middle... that's why they fired their entire LB corps.

So either your memory or his stats are wrong. I'm with Wozzy on this one.

Some folks even make up their own stats to support their prejudices; some waggish troll here claimed the Pats defense was 10th in points/game.

They were 2nd:

All anyone remembers is the playoff bomb.

Yea don't think too much into the name bc you play the run on the "edge" as well. That's a given. It's more all-encompassing when you look at guys like Cam Jordan, Watt, even Reggie White. Guys move around so much especially today. I don't think "edge" does it justice but I'm obviously a weirdo. Not a big deal.

Where's Ken going to be besides a poker table???

No absolutely not we need to be very watchful and attentive. 2nd year QB's that have their OC changed haven't done well if my memory serves me and let's be honest I'm never wrong. I can't think of all names on both sides, QB/OC but I believe the track record isn't a list you want to be on.

Cheers you wanker. Happy 4th of July from the oldest, freeest, best country in the world.

Hmm ... apart from the people who weren't counted because they were slaves, that makes sense.
Hey you should watch the movie RRR! You guys left quite an impression in India and not so long ago...

Hmm ... apart from the people who weren't counted because they were slaves, that makes sense.
Considering the slavery that the UK was involved in, I wouldn't think you'd be piping up tp much on others indiscretions.

Just because I am pointing out that America's claim to democracy doesn't go back as far as Independence, doesn't mean that I'm a fan of the British Empire and its slave trade (which was abolished in 1807, by the way, and slavery as a whole in the Empire in 1833).
Since all democracies have flawed pasts, the US's status as the oldest continuous semblance of a democracy remains valid.

You also missed my point about the broader pattern of imperial abuse by England. As recently as the 1940's England had a fantastically high ratio of 2nd and 3rd class subjugated people, I think it was at one point 800 million people subjugated by 40 million. Many of those people hate the English to this day -- include Barak Obama. Rhodesia, South Africa and especially India are pretty horrible abuse cases. England is no position to complain about anyone's past imperial abuses.

Look, I believe that England and it's daughter colonies including the US built the modern world and I think much more for the better than the worse. But an Englishman singling out the US for imperial snark is laughable. Plenty of guilt to go around.
