Patriots OTA's 5-31-2022

Question about Mac's throwing:

While there is call for a "stronger" arm, does Mac's high arc on the deep (which, high arc=more hang time=longer pass to completion interval) suggest that it's actually a mechanic in the way he throws deep? (Suggesting that, it's not just strength)

Would love some insight! Any kind of breakdown on general throwing mechanics is also appreciated

Most of the concerns are with him improving the velocity on the intermediate/sideline opposite hash throws which tended to float in, not him chucking it deep like Mahomes.

I think those lollipop throws are fine in certain routes. He's pretty accurate with those. The improvement needs to be in deep line drive throws into tight windows that require greater velocity.

Obviously Bill wouldn't come out and flat out say Malcolm can't do it anymore if that were the case but I find it encouraging he said he's about the same as before. If Malcolm can play for us like his first stint that will really make it easy to swallow losing JC.

JC obviously got more ints but I think Malcolm was still slightly better than JC for us.

Malcolm go!

I'm curious why you say that Malcolm was slightly better. Is it because he had 9 more starts? Took more total snaps? Unfortunately there are no advanced stats on Pro-Football Reference for Butler's time with the Pats. But Jackson also had more PDs than Butler.

I think at their best they are really close. Maybe it's a recency thing with JC having struggled a little vs a couple number 1 WRs.

Either way the real key will be if he can be anywhere near his prime after missing a season.

Didn't the Titans release Butler? Why was that? Is Butler 32 now? Not sure he will be a #1 at 32 years of age. Even Gilmore was not re-signed by Carolina and he is 32 this year. Revis was about 30 when he went back to the JETE and he shortly thereafter fell off a cliff.

Butler struggled against a few #1 WR's in his best year's as the #1 CB between 2015-2016. It happens.

Even Revis got roasted a couple times in 2014.

JC has allowed only ONE 100 yard WR in his 4 year career. However, this is not to say he hasn't gotten beaten at times because he has.

The days of the "lockdown CB" are a unicorn for NFL fans. Ramsey, who is arguably the game's best CB, almost lost the Rams the game against Tampa Bay and got roasted in the Super Bowl.

The int in the end zone in Buffalo was not a tight window but too much air allowed a great safety to make the play. Hopefully he can improve to put enough juice to complete those.

I blame Agholor more than Mac. It was a pathetic effort by the WR. Brady has thrown those lollipop throws in the past, but lucked out with a WR like Moss making a play.

More detail is better. E.g., 18/55 expanded caption: "Matt Patricia tells Mac Jones about that time he and the wife had dinner with BB and Linda Holiday..."

Wasn't that a fairly long throw?

Yea, looked like Agholor was looking for a far post throw, which he could've easily caught but it was a bit under thrown.

Agholor didn’t have much space towards the sideline, maybe a foot or two; there definitely wasn’t room for him to break that route into a corner post and I don’t think Agholor or Jones were expecting that route to be anything other than a ‘go’.

The ball was, maybe, 5-10% underthrown, Agholor could’ve given a bit more effort to meet the ball, and Hyde made a extraordinarily good play on the ball. The vast majority of the credit (or blame, if you will) for that play should go to Hyde, not Jones or Agholor.
