Patriots OTA's 5-31-2022

Bill acknowledged that explosive plays are as important as TO but didn't know if it was on W & Ls but certainly on scoring.

How did you come to this conclusion?
Based on their personnel moves, types of players, schemes being rumored they're working on. Faster LBs, faster WRs, smaller faster CBs, faster RBs, more athletic G. Outside zone blocking schemes, RPOs, etc. Just what's out there. Obviously we won't know until preseason, but there's a narrative that fits what other teams are doing.

Huh, that's dissapointing.

Curious that Bill was asked about the pass/run coordinator roles that other teams run (mainly in college). He said, you'll need to ask those teams.

I read all this and think there's no way to know what the innovations are. That's just common stuff.

This idea in the Boston media that Bill isn't an innovator because of his age is just absolute lunacy. I think he's cooking something up for us. This idea that you have to be 35 to be innovative is lunacy too. The older I get, the more I realize this isn't true. While it may be harder for older people to generate new ideas, one thing they are unlikely to do is reinvent the wheel, which is a common mistake of younger people. They think they're onto something new, without any context or awareness for what's been done in the past. And this is the advantage Belichick has.

I think what Bill is cooking is that the quarterback is going to call plays during the game.

Mac is like a computer, and the closer a computer is to raw data, the better it will perform.

There will be a game plan and discussion, but this is where I think Bill wants to go.

Bill a lot more candid and engaged. A lot of talk about interactions w/ other Boston sports teams.

Talked about how team looks at players from an economic value point of view and reassess the type of player being pursued (ex. WR).

Said team looking at having a different offense.

Said Uche was a player important to the team but would not compare him to Hightower.

Said Butler looks the same as before.

Rookies being challenged on environment, competition, etc. some a lot more than others.

Said value of ST has dropped.
Could you expound on "value of ST has dropped" means? Did he mean that the cost of special teams players in the market has gone down related to the economic question? Or that he values special teams players less than he did previously?

Excited to have a different offense. I would love to see more spread and tempo next year. I still think the Pats will run a lot but I expect it will be out of pass sets to keep the defense off balance. I bet we will see a lot more RPO too.

Uche needs to stay healthy. If he can I think he can really make an impact, but he's never healthy so we can't really count on him.

I hope Mac takes a bunch of deep shots this year.

Because of rule changes, for example more touchbacks. He meant it has less of an impact on the game, not that it's not important.

Obviously Bill wouldn't come out and flat out say Malcolm can't do it anymore if that were the case but I find it encouraging he said he's about the same as before. If Malcolm can play for us like his first stint that will really make it easy to swallow losing JC.

JC obviously got more ints but I think Malcolm was still slightly better than JC for us.

Malcolm go!
Mr. Butler never has to intercept another ball again and I still will be content rooting for him.

Brady wasn't calling plays in his 20th year.

There is absolutely no way that Mac Jones is anywhere near Brady's level when it comes to diagnosing the defense.

Now, it may be true that Mac will be doing something on the order of what Peyton Manning did, but that would require a significantly simple offense.

Personally, I can't imagine that Belichick would ever give up the playcalling control that the coaches have had over the years. I can't see it. Not in his nature.
