DRAFT Patriots select WR Tyquan Thornton at 50.

Really? Jakobi was a UDFA who was just developing. During a year in which 4 OL were hurt and Marshall Newhouse was the LT. Meyers and Brady barely even saw the field together.
It's notorious that Brady dissed Meyers in 2019 and didn't want to throw to him.

baylor has a run heavy offense, they use a lot of PA stuff so this pick makes sense from a scheme standpoint i guess. i like it

We are not worried about him taking Harry's spot, looks like the Patriots are poised to exercised the fifth year option for Harry. More winning Harry. ~

If this young man can stay healthy, he's going to be a special player, imho. I think you're going to grow to like him more and more, my friend.
i agree with you. I hope he can be the deep threat to make life easier for mac and allow him to be more risky and take shots downfield. his accuracy allows that. I hope they connect well early on and thornton adapt the offense quickly.

Image the meltdown this board would have had had the Pats selected Cooper Kupp in the first round when he was coming out
That would require me to first imagine that the Patriots could pick out talent at WR in the draft.

So over the 2017-2020 period, where there has been time to evaluate, the best players drafted are Wynn, Bentley, Harris, Bailey, Duggar, and Uche. Not a lot of Pro Bowl representation there. Three positional starters; four if you count Duggar, and a good punter.

Sure, Belichick has access to much more data than fans who read reviews from the experts. But generally those reaches just haven't worked. And now we are seeing a lot more reaches.
100% agree. Outside of the 2021 draft the Patriots have shown a painful unawareness of consensus draft values. This has caused them to reach far earlier on players than they needed to, and the returns on investment have been poor.

This is a pattern of behavior that starts at the top, most likely the person stacking these draft boards is just not properly accounting for consensus value, and until that awareness gets better on draft night, we are going to continue to see these draft reaches. 2022 is Groh's fingerprint. Whether he likes it or not, this is going to be his legacy. I know it's his 'first try' stacking the board by himself. But everything operates off the Draft Board. All of the decisions flow from it so if that thing is initially set out of whack, the decisions based off it will end up out of whack. Hopefully he gets better and better at it, otherwise, I cringe to think what our future drafts are going to look like.

The Patriots have been accused of reaching for the following players:

Richard Seymour, Matt Light, Daniel Graham, Deion Branch, Eugene Wilson, Logan Mankins, Matt Cassel, Steve Gostkowski, Sebastian Vollmer, Patrick Chung, Devin McCourty, Shane Vereen, Chandler Jones, Jamie Collins, Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, James White, Kyle Dugger.

Don't get me wrong: you'll find just as many reaches who busted and failed. But it's clear Belichick has his own values, and all of the above players were much lower when you look at the consensus. Admittedly, Cole Strange seems to have broken the record when it comes to first rounders. I can't recall someone rated so lowly. I think the next lowest first rounder would have to be either Logan Mankins, Chandler Jones or Devin McCourty. All 3 of these players were slotted about 10-20 picks back from where they were selected. Strange is more like 30-40 picks back.

Solid observation.
I mentioned before the draft that BB does not risk losing out on a coveted player that often, which makes the Mac Jones pick sort of mysterious.
I think most of us would have been okay with Travis Jones at 21....after some consideration. Strange just wasn't highlighted by anyone throwing names around. Thornton even less. At this point his slotting really doesn't matter. He'll be a solid contributor and will have any of 50 random names thrown up during the course of his career, that should have been the selection. Life goes on.

Nah, Mankins was identical. Everyone screamed what a horrible reach it was to take him at 32 and then it turned out someone else was going to take him just a pick or two later.

Keep in mind that part of the 'consensus' thing is disinformation to try and keep people away from the players you actually want.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but a nice little insight into the kid

Well I hope he pans out. Tyquan seems like a nice person. And it looks like he will take his job a lot more seriously than N'Keal did because Tyquan has a family and kids that he needs to take care of. So that's a good sign from the start. Just hope he can absorb that playbook and establish that connection with Mac Jones. Because that's going to be important for him to get off to a good start here in New England.

I am guessing that when the Patriots traded up in the 2nd round you were hoping for Travis Jones????

I'm not talking about where someone else would take him. I'm talking about the consensus ratings.

And when the Patriots selected Mankins, many saw it as a major reach, as Mankins was widely projected to go somewhere in the late second or third round. Nonetheless, the Patriots made the bold pick, and Mankins immediately stepped into the starting left guard spot, a spot he hasn't let up since.

I honestly think BB LOVES being unconventional and proving that his way is far superior to Mel Kiper, Todd McShay and the media. I think he gets a perverse sense of pleasure going left while everyone else goes right. This approach worked well for him the first 10-15 years here...but it seems to have failed more recently.
Groh basically has to toe the line. I doubt Groh makes the picks without BB giving thumbs up or down. This is just his first year in this position.

Its hard to have confidence in BB round 2 WR selection...because of his abysmal history of drafting WR's and his history of signing free agent veteran wide receivers who work out is also not great.

Thornton and the 2 Jones DB's and possibly Zappe, simply speaking do not seem to have the physical build of an NFL player to both dish out and absorb hits. I hope to hell they are seriously focused on gaining some muscle mass or else I expect all 3 will wind up on IR (Zappe will probably be on the bench anyways). It seems so out of character for BB to draft 3 of these players who are <190 with one under 180 and also if you look at Zappe he also looks like he needs to get more lean muscle mass.

If you look at the Ravens, for example, they drafted players who all have physical build of an NFL player and look like they can dish out punishment. High Wonderlic scores and a good interview by themselves do not make a prowl player. The Jets and Bills also have size and physically strong players.

Regarding DB's it's fact that some of the all-time greats were somewhat short in stature. BB overthinks....smarter then everyone else. There is an ego issue there. And 6 super-bowls is fine by me.

How is it reasonable to equate post facto consensus with pre-draft consensus?

My thesis is now that the only NFL teams management that care about the public draft consensus are the ones worried about losing their jobs.

My opinion is that public draft consensus is another form of fantasy football: a fun entertaining alternative way of scoring football activity not particularly relevant to actual football teams.

No way in hell they exercise that 5th year option for Harry, hell, he might not make it out of camp. Harry will probably never see the field in a Pat’s uniform ever again. Parker, Bourne, Meyers, Agholor & Thornton are all ahead of Harry.
