OPTION 1
Move down and draft your #3 OG in the first for 5 years.

OPTION 2
Trade up to 16 or higher for Johnson, perhaps costing a 3rd (or more).

OPTION 3
Trade down a 2nd time and hope that the top OG on your board was available at 54.
==================
YOU CHOOSE (Belichick rejected Option 3, since he apparently had only one OG left high on his board)
Belichick wanted to get his OG, apparently his #1 priority, so
JOHNSON or
STRANGE plus our 3rd plus an addition 3rd and an additional 4th

I like the trade back to 29 I think we received great value for the trade. The issue is the pick itself. Do I think Strange will be a day 1 starter, yes, will he be good, I think so, I just think they could have gotten more value at 29 than a guard and there were good defensive options still there.

Now I know the draft isn't done yet and we still have more picks left, so lets see what we do, but if I'm being honest, I was "shocked" by the pick.

We drafted mason in 4th round and we did fine. We drafted Onwenu in 6th round and are doing great.

Why in the whole universe do you draft a guard in 1st round when you can get relatively decent players in 3rd to 5th round. It's not a position that you need to have all pro talent to compete. You should do fine with decent players.

We have so many holes and we just wasted it on a position that we could have filled with a decent player in late 3rd round.

I feel the same. Reflecting I think Zion or Kendrick were the initial target but the draft just didnt go that way. This was a need and whether or not they had him above those two or rated as the 3rd best guard, they filled it, they felt strongly about the player enough that they pulled the trigger way earlier than most expected and “it is what is” as BB would say.

It makes the next pick extremely important because if they land Travis Jones, Booth or Neal, etc then to me it’s no harm no foul, flip the picks around and it’s irrelevant regardless of the view on where Strange should of gone. You got two needs filled, just different rounds of where they should of went according to the armchairs.

OPTION 4
Don't trade your Pro Bowl Guard for a bag of magic beans
Bill has a pretty good track record of moving on from a player a year too early rather than a year too late. I don't love the Strange pick but more often than not trades like this have been good for the Patriots.

Me too. I missed the draft last night, and I'm no draft-nik super-brain like BGC.

But when I logged in here this morning, i was like...

Two time All Pro, which everyone knows is a higher honor than the Pro Bowl.

His wikipedia page says he hasn't won any major awards in the pros other the super bowl. And the page you cited doesn't have him winning any major pro awards either other than All Pro Teams for Pro Football Focus, which doesn't count. I wish people would stop spreading misinformation.

Great points, the next pick will be extremely important!! I initially thought we would go defense with our first pick and then possibly target Metchie with our 2nd, now it's imperative that we focus on the defensive side of the ball.

How are you going to feel if BB trades the picks he gained to trade up in the second round? The trade may have been good value, but the pick wasn't. I cannot wrap my head around BB (or anyone else) having Strange at the top of their draft board at pick 29. And have him rated that much higher than Ryan, Jurgens, Parham or Salyer. All who are still on the board.
I cannot defend BB for this pick.

metchie is still a strong possibility

There's a darn good chance the "decent player" we could have filled that position with in the 3rd round would have been the same guy....

If Strange is our #3 guard, who's #2 (assuming #1 is Onwenu)?

I believe that Belichick had less faith than you that he could get a starting guard in the 2nd or 3rd.

Also, Belichick may not have had the defensive players available at 29 rated much higher than those available at 54.

PERHAPS for Belichick,
Strange at 29 plus a defensive player at 54 was equal or better on his board than
a defensive player at 29 and a guard at 54

Perhaps you have focused on what Belichick did: the severe lack of talent at OG and backup OC.

Who are the 2 IOL's in addition to Andrews, Onwenu and Strange?

ON THE ROSTER
Desjarlais, Hambright, Sherman, Ferentz

BOTTOM LINE
Belichick upgraded from Ferentz to Strange (OG and backup OC), and he gained a 3rd and a 4th. We SHOULD be celebrating.

ALSO
We still need help at OG and OT, from the draft, trade or from free agency.

The trade back was exactly what they should have done. It’s what I was calling for before the 21st was traded.

The pick itself will be judged in years to come. I had strange ranked as one of the best OG’s on my big board.

I didn’t see it coming, thought OT was going to be the pick. But the player himself is a great prospect. Obviously they’re secure with their OT depth.

metchie is still a strong possibility
The way the wide receiver market is right now, they are valued extremely high, I bet he is gone by the time we pick. I think he would be a great addition however.
