DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

Still drinking the koolaid?

This was a horrible pick, plain and simple.

Do you really think this STRANGE would be gone before our next pick?

He will be 24 this season. He may retire before his 5th year option season
Yeah. OK. Whatever dude. Here is the typical "Kool Aid" drinker insults with ZERO football talk or knowledge show.

Logan Mankins says "HI" and so do the 49ers.

Too much weight is given to the interview, which is why we have N’Keal Harry instead of a much more productive wideout on the team.

It’s not just about filling a need, which Strange certainly does at LG—the Canadian might have something to say about it—but filling out the team needs. This is a team with many holes.

None so glaring as CB1.

Strange will have a big contract as a first-rounder. Will he really be that much better than Karras would have been next season? I doubt it.

Plenty of opportunities later in the draft for guard. Plenty.

Strange was probably the top OG left on the patriot board. As for the fiction of BPA, that is indeed a fiction.

Bill wanted a starting OG. Bill got a starting OG. Maybe he would have been there at 54, maybe not.
I disagree. He wanted THIS player. He valued THIS player as 29 or even 21 it sounds.
If there was not LG value in the 20s he would have found his LG a different way, but he clearly felt this was the best player he could fill that huge need with.
What you will likely see is that the when they day 2 players are selected the gap between the guy they take and who they could have taken at that position at 21/29 is smaller than the gap between Strange and the G they could have taken there, after factoring in system fit, etc.

Well typically when you disagree you state a reason. I’ve answered each of your reasons. That’s what a discussion is.

I point out those differences because you seem to think you have a sufficient amount of knowledge and data to evaluate the pick. You don’t. You are guessing, and guessing with almost zero insight.

No he is not a God. And sure you can have whatever opinion you want, but at least own why you have it. It’s not because you have a knowledgeable opinion about the player. It’s because you read or heard things from people and you are placing more value in their ability to evaluate players than Belichicks which I would think woof make you ask who are they and what success have they had that creates such confidence in them from you.

Ultimately the best who has ever done it made a decision and you are relying on a bunch of wannabes to form a negative opinion about it.

The truth is, many picks fail. Many succeed, many are mediocre
But which it will be is more likely to confirm with bill belichick evaluation than the masses.
Again. I’m a fan, and this is a fan message board. Yes, I am going to state an opinion. That is what EVERYONE is here for. WTF are you even talking about regarding making an opinion about the player? You act as if I said he’s a turd and should’ve never been drafted. That’s my problem with your so-called discussion. You keep stretching it out to something it’s not. I said I disagreed with you about age being meaningless.

Where in our conversation did I quote other peoples opinions or evaluations about the player?

I just placed my order for my STRANGE #69 jersey

Going to be a hot seller

No issue with the player but the pick is just gross. I don't mind even if you reach slightly for him at 54 but you have to be cognisant of league wide value and ratings. No one was selecting him in the top 50 surely. Awful pick.
And how are YOU cognizant of the league wide value and ratings?
Why do you feel you have a better insight into that than the patriots organization?
Belichick said he believed he wasn’t going to last much longer. What do you know that trumps that? Help me understand why I should believe your opinion over his.

So this guy STRANGE is Logan Mankins?

Do you think he would be gone before our 2nd round pick????

I believe STRANGE would be there in the 2nd, so that’s why I call it a dumb pick.

He is a GRUNT…. Talent goes in the 1st round & Grunts go in the third.

Oh, and get off your high horse about who people use to generate their opinions on players. If I came in here and said “Hell yeah! Cole Strange! Dudes gonna be a stud! I saw blow hard Williams over there on www.amateurhour.com talking about how great he is!! Great pick.” You wouldn’t be saying **** about who I use to generate my opinion on players. Give me a break.

I don't think you understand how the Patriots grade NEED. They very likely graded OG, DT, LB, and CB as having the same NEED. So then it came down to everything else about the grades. How they grade the prospects potential as well as how the prospects total grade is against the players of the same position on the team.

If they had Strange as a higher grade than the other players remaining on their board at those positions, they aren't going to ignore that.
Strange will have a big contract as a first-rounder. Will he really be that much better than Karras would have been? I doubt it.
Your statement is wildly inaccurate. Karras got a 3yr/$18M contract. The 29th pick last year got 4yr/$11.9M contract. Let's say the pool went up 20%. That's still a 4yr/14.28M Contract. That's significantly LESS than what Karras got. the 29th pick last year had a 2.17M cap hit. So, Strange will have around a 2.6M cap hit. Karras' cap hit is $5M this year.

Weak draft class that is more depth heavy. Doesn’t excuse the reach, but there’s definitely less upper class talent in this draft worth spending premium draft capital on. But it is a draft that you can find value in the mid rounds. We gotta hit it big now tomorrow.
Why do you keep saying it was a "reach"? Because the Draft Magazines told you so? Because the Dane Bruglers, Mel Kipers, Todd McShays's told you so?

You're LITERALLY parroting everything said when the Patriots drafted Logan Mankins. Just remember that we found out later that the 49ers were planning on taking Mankins with the very next pick. And Bill looked like a bloody genius. Not saying it's going to happen again, but this idea that Strange was going last until 54 or 85 has no basis in reality. It's quite literally wishful thinking.

Someone is giving BB way too much credit. We haven’t seen BB do much without Brady. So far the last few years pick have been meh. DaBruinz is probably one of those guys that is probably defending the N’Keal 1st round pick. Some of the members on this board are just out of their minds.
Jones, Barmore, Stevenson is “meh”?

I think he's a good player and will be our starting LG from the get go, but I also think he would've been there in the second round and we should've taken a genuine first round talent with that pick, and taken Strange in the 2nd

My 1st reaction like pretty much everyone else was a gasp (and disappointment since it's the opposite of a secksy pick - kindof like my reaction to rumors of potentially getting Zion at 21). Then I remembered I almost took Strange in my mock thx to BGC's incredible research, but I didn't want to pick an IOL until the 5th and couldn't pick him there, but that's because I wanted the secksier picks for the first 4 rounds. I don't know why people are poopoohing the cost savings over Mason, but it looks pretty darn significant. Plus there's the 5th year option.

2 and a half months ago, Nagy was hearing 2nd Rd for him. A month ago, a former NFL scout had him at #28 (see link below). If BB really wanted the guy (and I don't blame him after the 1st half last year when Mac had a second to throw back there), and he says he thought he might be gone early in the 2nd, why do people seem to be so sure he'd be there at 54 or the 3rd Rnd? Trades up aren't guaranteed, either. Sure there's McVay's reaction, but there are 30 other teams who might've wanted him earlier.

Tested very well. High character. Super smart, supposedly.

Half true. If only you were saying that I probably wouldn’t say a thing. But if the whole board were, I’d treat it exactly the same way.
It’s not whether it’s positive or negative, it’s when it is misguidedly over reacting.
Unfortunately and ironically, on the message board of the most successful franchise in the sport (at least recently) it’s about 100 times more common that the group think is overwhelmingly inappropriately negative.
If we had the track record of the Jetes I’d be the guy arguing against the optimists.
