BGC 2022 IDL/PTP Thread

Wow.
Drafting done strictly by game tape, certain bowl practices, prior interviews, and phone/zoom would be a game changer. Calling all crusty old scouts!!!
Yea it's getting crazy. It's really not even about the drills. Combine is the biggest meeting spot for NFL big shots. You can do the drills in another atmosphere / event. Really don't understand it but most of these kids can do these drills elsewhere

Right, but the combine represents the first time that many of these prospects are viewed under those circumstances, and comparing one to others is easier with so many of them present at the same time... The damage done to proper evals without a full combine is questionable, but it doesn't help.

Ultimately they're there for #'s. I get what you're saying about looking at them up close and personal but it's all about the times. You can get & compare those from elsewhere. The real magic is between the coaches, GM's etc talking face to face. Opportunities you just don't get most of the year away from each other.

The Combine just announced that they aren't doing the bubble, per se. Seems that they decided to backtrack after all the brew-ha-ha amongst the agents threatening to have more than half the players show up but not participate..

What kind of boggles my mind is that the agents are portraying this as players have these giant entourages that they MUST have with them.. Not to mention the ridiculous claims that the place is a sterile environment unsuitable for the physical testing the NFL wants to do..

I read that from one agent and I was left scratching my head. It's in Indy at a Pro Football stadium. How is that a "sterile environment unsuitable for the physical testing"??? It's an actual damn football field the Pro's use..

Yea I think the agents were prepared to say anything. It's best for every one involved to have most prospects together in one setting but not crucial. I'd be curious to see where the event is in 10 years. So much has changed in the past 10-20 years it's amazing. I mean Brady was in cargo shorts not too long ago lol.

Yes they are there for the numbers AND numbers that are recorded in the same manner so the numbers are compatable and reliable. If various Pro Days pop up, the numbers will be less reliable. With so much money involved, if various "Pro Days" appear, cheating will happen. At the Combine, reliability is as important as the actual numbers.

Good thing about that is you have media, agents & reps from other teams to verify. I get what you're saying. One centralized event makes much more sense. Plus I was wrong. The biggest and most important reason is the medical evals. Those always throw a wrench in everyone's plans.

Thanks. I missed the med evals as well.

@BaconGrundleCandy How does your DT review align with what Bedard put out this morning at BSJ?

If Davis could be another Ted Washington I would be all in. I still consider him the best nose tackle the Pats had, albeit for one year. Apologies to Vince.

Here it is Scotty:

DEFENSIVE LINE

Current Patriots Roster

Carl Davis (free agent), Daniel Ekuale (free agent), Henry Anderson (contract year), Davon Godchaux (contract year), Christian Barmore (2024), Byron Cowart (contract year), Deatrich Wise (2024), Lawrence Guy (2024), Byron Cowart (2024).

Patriots Historical Drafting

Over the last 15 years, the Patriots have made 12 selections. All those picks have come from major conferences, with the SEC having 5 selections. The Patriots did well with Malcom Brown (Texas) and early returns on Christian Barmore (Alabama) are great. The Patriots get a passing grade with Byron Cowart (Maryland). The biggest misses were Dominique Easley (Florida) and Ron Brace (BC).

Draft Expectations for the Position

From a league perspective, draft numbers aren’t as clear because of the evolution of what the front seven means in different schemes (DE vs. OLB). We’ll focus on the edge in another write-up but let's stick right on the line of scrimmage. Over the last 5 years, there have been 2.4 true defensive tackles selected in the first round. In 2019 there were 6 which inflated the numbers. This year is an average class. No clear-cut game-winners along the defensive line but there are some solid players who will get selected across the first 100 picks (3 rounds). From there it’s the eye of the beholder.

This is one of their top positions of need coming into the draft. The best Patriots teams, and Bill Belichick defenses, all had the ability to control the LOS and were strong up the middle. Expect the Patriots to address the defensive line at some point.

Potential First-Rounders

NT Jordan Davis, Georgia (6-foot-6, 340 pounds): He's virtually impossible to single block in the run game and very difficult to run at directly. He can make “wow” plays that just aren’t common and he will make someone’s run defense better. The biggest part of his evaluation is that he only plays 20-25 snaps a game and tires quickly.

He's not the fastest guy off the ball, doesn't offer much in pass rush and could do a better job getting hands up to deflect passes. I compare him to former Jacksonville Jaguar JohnHenderson or ideally Ted Washington for all of us older Pats fans. In a passing league, there’s a question of how much to value that skill set in Round 1.

DL DeMarvin Leal, Texas A&M (6-4, 290): He’s a versatile defensive lineman that can slide anywhere along the line. He has disruptive quickness and the ideal size the Patriots want in a 3-4 end. He doesn’t have the bend to put up sack numbers on the edge, but he can play inside on passing downs. He started as a freshman for the Aggies (good indicator on ability to transition quickly) and started almost 30 games in the SEC. He was 1st-team All-SEC this year.

DT Devonte Wyatt, Georgia (6-2, 307): Good burst and athleticism combination. He may have the best get-off of all defensive line prospects but he’s more of a gap lineman, which isn’t a great fit for the Patriots scheme. He doesn't always play to his weight in the run game. He’s a solid player that has some good pass rush moves, range, and quickness but not a traditional fit.

DL Logan Hall, Houston (6-5, 278): Houston coach Dana Holgorsen says Hall is one of the best DTs he's ever coached. He looks athletic, is very long and he has good strength. He isn't afraid of physicality on the inside, but I think he has great potential as a 3-4 end, with the ability to move inside on passing downs. He's a good player that will need to work on countering moves and really focus on pad level, especially in a technique league. He's going to be a tweener for some teams and may take some time to develop. Patriots will have him well scouted as their area scout played for Holgorsen.

I am a huge hall fan! He would be ideal as a 5 technique for us.

The leg drive is incredible, he spends so much time in the backfield.

Him or Leal would be exactly what we need opposite barmore.

We have More need for a Beef Curtain opposite Barmore.

And what about a DE opposite Judon? All we have there is Notso Wise & Wino...

Don't forget Uche as well :)

I totally agree with you as far as another large DT though....I think after Jordan Davis does his drills, he will shoot up the draft and I don't think he'll get past the Chargers anyway, but maybe another Alabama product like Matthis or Travis Jones could be added to help with the inside beef.

Looks like Ashley fixed you up.
BSJ fits the profile of damaging or highly controversial content over there? :)

Yes, its stupid...........but I may have got this wrong. At one point there was a notification that it was not avail in Europe. But when I looked last week it said basically this is what you pay......so it has changed. I feel cheap now.....lol ....but remember I am Scottish:whistle:

...and Ronnie Perkins...

:rofl::rofl:

Exactly... I would much, Much, MUCH rather have Travis Jones at 53/54 after trading 21 down and out of the first round enough times to acquire an early 2nd-rounder, another Day 2 pick, two Day 3 picks AND a 5th-rounder next year than Any Other DT at 21 with only five picks remaining.

The logic is Irrefutable.

This is the Way.

Truth. He killed at the combine. I think we can all officially give up on him being available at 21.
