Yeah well this is true then. Contrary to construction worker guy beliefs, it's not that Mac has a bad arm. It's the OLine sucks so bad and regardless of whatever crappy shotgun play is called, Mac is looking first for the quick throw. The right read. This is all a concern I had abou Mac playing too soon, going to get bad habits from an oc calling sh-tty plays that get Mac hit a lot otherwise.
And the broken record plays on

Of course and again, I have no issue with what they are going. I am just saying they are doing it becuase they can. A bad team has to put all their hopes on the high draft pick QB, so they throw him to the wolves. Patriots do not have to do that. Bill is not trying to keep his job, they have time, others dont, they want results and they want them now. What he turns into, I dont know, its really hard to tell. Lots of factors, injuries, how quickly you process information, clutch factor. Its just really those things that you learn over time and never right away. How do they deal with getting new wideouts, how do they handle losing, how do they handle a bad game, just so many things. He has a golden opportunity to make his case. Its not a one shot deal here. He can mess up and its ok. Time is on his side, he just has to take advantage of it.

Its not like he is playing bad, its not like he looks lost. Just the opposite, so I am in no way saying, oh well he is done because that is silly. What I am basically saying is that people will have to have patience and the expectations that have been here for 20 years or winning the superbowl or bust every year, has to go down a notch. Every time he does something, I read media saying, wow Brady did that, or that looked like Brady, that needs to go, because he needs to be Mac Jones, and people need to stop trying to make him Brady.
I think people that really know football are seeing him make reads and be very cerebral about the game, like Brady. Which is why they make the comparison. He'll if he's at the level of Drew Brees, BB could have easily won multiple SB with that guy.

I think hes showing that he belongs and he's not in over his head and he's bought into the idea that protecting the football is better than taking risks downfield right now

In order to push the ball downfield you have to have a pocket that holds together plus be able to pick up the blitz. I'm not sure JMD feels the O-line is there at the moment.

I think the Oline will be fine. Hopefully Brown is back next game. He’s a major piece to the puzzle. I was hoping when we got him, he would move to LT and Wynn would move to LG or RT. But it seems they want to keep him at RT. Either way, when he comes back, I think we’ll see more cohesion with the line.

Things can change pretty quickly with an Oline, even game to game, or IN game. I remember in SB 51, Brady had pressure all game, sacked 5 times, but when it mattered most, when the line gave him time, Brady was unstoppable. Granted Brady is on another level, but given time by the line, most QBs will be able to hit any play from the playbook.

I’m not a stats guy. I only care about wins. I don’t need Jones to light the league on fire as a rookie. Just be a game manager who makes few mistakes, that to me makes a great rookie season for a QB. If the Pats are in the top 5-7 in rushing, this team can win 9-10 games.

They will need to take more chances downfield if they want to be competitive for the next 2 games

actually if they want to win the next two, they need to maximize TOP, convert 3rd downs, convert in the red zone and limit TOs

this is not a team built to win a track meet......they'll need to go downfield when it is there to open up the defense a little, but this offense is predicated on TOP and efficiency

Basically, Mac in most cases is taking what is the defense giving him and the Pats are putting together well designed plays that will help him gain confidence and learn as he goes.
Putting together well designed plays?

Its throwing more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. Next Sunday night we are going to find out what Mac is made of.

Thanks for the explanation. I don’t mean to be a jerk here, and I’m really high on Mac, but the concern is exactly that: Mac is taking what the defenses are giving him. Defenses will gladly give quarterbacks a ton of passes to avoid a big-time chunk play. The offense can’t sustain itself because 15-play drives often require a handful of 3rd down conversions, and usually sacks and offensive penalties will kill the momentum. And in the red zone, taking what the defense gives you is even more of a steel trap.

This is not to say that Mac can’t hit big plays or that McD should open it all up and have him start launching passes. Just my general takeaway is that this doesn’t actually alleviate the concerns.
I don't even agree with the main premise. The reason downfield is so clogged is because Mac isn't taking what the defenses give him initially. He is getting plenty of time but staring into the teeth of the D. If he got the ball quicker to some of our guys wide open short, they could make chunk plays with YAC. That would force the defense to respect the short game, which they're not doing right now.

That's not what Josh said:

Josh has come up with plays to get receivers open downfield but for whatever reason Mac hasn't taken the shot. You don't call a trick play to check down. The OL issues may have a lot to do with it.

I'll add that from a situational-football mindset, there have been no times in these first two games that called for "opening it up."

If he's dinking and dunking down 9 in Q4, maybe it's time to wonder. They should be 2-0, and almost certainly would be 2-0 were it not for Harris's uncharacteristic fumble.

I'd rather win 10-3 than lose 41-35.

So you believe that the Pats coaches tell you every detail and what they are thinking in their press conferences? Of course they are bringing the kid along. Read between the lines, they weren't telling him to be super aggressive and you can see it from his reads. Look at some film man.

Yes, well designed plays, I'm sorry, did you work in the league for 10 years and then start your own QB school?

He left plays on the field. Mac acknowledged it. Don't be such a homer. It's ok for a rookie QB to make mistakes. You can take it man.

The 2 or 3 times where he had an open guy downfield and threw it short, he just didn't see them. Why make it more complicated than that? Brady and all QB's occasionally don't see a guy breaking open deep.

On the double pass, Jones said he felt rushed on the play cause he had no protection out there, and that next time he would sneak a peak around himself before catching the ball. He saw the TE first for a good gain and took it.

To the OP, just ignore the crazy trolls. Just click on their names (we all know who they are) and just "smash" that "Ignore" button. Your mental health will thank you.

I haven’t been able to get my ignore to work, otherwise DropKickNewton would have been on it long ago. It’s definitely the best way to deal with the @ssholes who bang on their agenda all day every day.

I know OP might have a hissy fit but I don't know why we didn't give Mac a chance to throw in the red zone at the end of the game. The game was already in hand and I think a few live reps wouldn't hurt given how poor our red zone offense has looked.

Not sure why he would feel rushed when closest person to him was a ref 4 yards away. He was wide open.
