Josh Uche = Beast

I keep thinking of how many years it's taken for some of our favorite LB/Edge guys to thrive in this defense. What was Bruschi initially? Let's have some patience with Uche.

I remember Bruschi was a sub-rusher in '96 in a 4-3 look, and really didn't get comfortable until year 3 as a 3-4 MLB under Carroll. This is Uche's second year so he still needs seasoning, regardless. Both he and Winowich are small for a 3-4, so they come off more like sub-rushers for their ceiling. Hopefully not, but that's how it appears so far.

Why only 15 snaps VS Dolphins?
Matt Judon, Donta Hightower, Van Noy.... who do you take out to put a young developing player in?

Rookies and young players need to earn their snaps.

That's actually a lot. There's only 50-70 defensive snaps a game usually (didn't look for this one) and more than a third of them are 1st downs. He's a passing down guy, playing on a team with a handful of quality edge rushers.

One flashy play does not make a football player. Wasn't that him taking that inside fake while Tua walked into the end zone?

dude...........my post was from last year

Damn people really turning on Uche after one game huh

Not that hard. We play a ton of man. Cover-1, Cover-0 over the last few years. This means that the backers are tasked with covering TEs, RBs, or even receivers operating out of the slot in man without safety help. Often while disguising pre-snap.
Aw man I was genuinely trying to learn. I know tones weird over the Internet, but ok.

makes sense I guess.

Yeah I don’t think LBs really have to learn the pattern-matching concepts that some of the DBs do, but the assignments are tough nonetheless.

No it's not. It's less than 30% of the defensive snaps.

Only Winovich, C Davis, J Williams. and Henry Anderson (whatever happened to him) had less.

I think it's because people like Paul Perillo, who has turned into a Curran level troll, are bashing him for some odd reason. I noticed it after the game on the postgame podcast. Dussault was being a little smug as well. Perillo made a comment like "people keep telling me about Uche and we never see him doing anything." (Paraphrasing)

But, Wozzy has it right up top. It's all situational and what they want to scheme certain plays into certain parts of the game. I don't know too many 240 lb people who can drive through a 330 lb RT like that. That was impressive.

His job is pash rusher, in obvious passing downs. I'm not going to do the work, but I'd bet he was in there for half of them.

To ask that he be put into the game in other situations is like asking for Nick Folk to QB. That's not his job right now.

Understand your comment, but was thinking of Uche as more than a situational player. I know that this was only the first game, but it's his second season.

I agree with Woozy's point, but the pass rush was a disappointment for me. I don't know if Uche would have made a difference if he played more, but I'd like to see more of him than this..

Fwiw: I just learned that uche is the French word for " ouch". Pronounced the same as Josh's name- ooh-chay

A turnstile is a better run defender than uche!

he needs to rush the passer only. Anything else is out of his wheel house,

Uche and Wino are 4-3 players. Look at their frames. They're thin. I was surprised with each pick, because neither is broad enough to set the edge regularly.

I actually think Uche would be better as an occasional blitzer out of a 3-4 MLB spot. Use his speed in space to offset the thumper like Hightower in the middle. Put him as the WILL in 3-4 looks. Move him up and around to OLB on 3rd and longs, sure, but I don't see him as someone who is more than that or a 4-3 DE with his hand in the dirt.

Who knows, maybe he can morph into some of that, but I don't see it yet. I wonder if BB just wanted legit, fresh edge rushers when he needed to have it and used picks on that kind of player.

He's got good speed, reflexes... has a higher upside vs Baby Thor...

think its possible to develop his ability to move in space so he gets better at dropping back into pass pro... add another dimension to his game besides situational pass rusher?

I couldn't believe that the Pats kept having Bentley in coverage. Anytime he gets matched up against a running back in coverage that is a loss for the Pats. I would love to see Uche get those snaps with Van Noy kicking inside, he has much better physical tools to cover in space than Bentley does, so I'd rather give him the snaps and let him grow into the role than ply Bentley who isn't going to improve as much in coverage.
What tells you uche could cover anyone?
