According to the NFL Network, Uche had several offers that trumped the Patriots, including a two-year, $15 million deal worth $11 million in guaranteed money.
Uche’s deal with the Pats is reportedly one year, $2.3million guaranteed and up to $8million with incentives.

He likes Mayo:
“The Patriots were the organization that gave me a chance in the NFL. It’s like family. It feels like home and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than home. So I think that was my main reason: Loyalty, family and love,” Uche said. “Coach (Jerod) Mayo is developing a lot of tough young men, and I feel like it’s something I just want to continue to be a part of. I think it’s just going to be great. I think the future is bright.

“I’m just happy to be home and get back to doing what I do best.”

On the one hand I love to have players who are loyal to the organization.

On the other hand, I want smart players and this seems... not so smart on his part lol

In all seriousness though, he must have real optimism that with BB and his son gone there will be some schematic switches that feature him more. Because as much as he may like it here, that's a pretty foolish amount of money to turn down without it being a calculated risk of being able to hit those incentives and/or earn more next year.

Or on the contrary, his life in Mass. has been nice and he has settled, and he's smart and was able to consider all variables of what's important to him. Some folks recognize that it isn't just the dollars, it does less for them. I'd imagine it's more of that than him not being smart.

$11M in guaranteed money would have set Oche and his family up for life. Sure, he can pass this up because this year might be better in New England.

he could be betting on himself too. If he has a repeat of 2022 with judon back and hits fa next year, he’ll get alot more than 11m guaranteed . If he has another meh year he’ll probably get a little less but the loss is probably not as big as the upside.

Uche had a breakout season in '22.. he tailed off in '23. I believe that affected his value. However he's a good player, home grown in the system.. love his attitude and what he brings as a pass rusher.. I believe he's better suited on passing downs and blitz packages.

Agree. He's likely better in a sub pass rushing role where he can do what he does best. Jennings is the guy who will likely start.. that guy can set the edge.

Idk if that was a smart decision but happy to have him.

So he did the opposite of Wes Welker
Seriously, why do people do this? Amazing how people blame millionaires for wanting to get paid when the inverse of that is billionaires making more money.

Before anybody talks about cap - it is that way so billionaires make more money.

I don't think he gave such a large discount as it makes no sense. If he did, he is an idiot.

Uche had a down year and his market was probably non existent. I think he gets back on track this season. I don't see Mayo putting guys on a instant timeout after a mistake they made.

I agree, but if I remember correctly, Welker was asking for value that didn't exist on the market. He wanted a lot more from the Pats, only to sign with the Broncos for pretty much what the Pats were offering.

Yeah I think his floor is another year like last year so the deals he would see in 2025 free agency are probably similar to what he saw in 2024 free agency. He knows he can probably get around that much money next year if need be. However if he stays here and returns to form with Judon back and Barmore hitting on his potential finally also then he will see much better offers next year. And he will get paid much better this year if he hits his incentives. Smart bet overall.

Honestly That has to be his floor barring injuries. 3 sacks and 3 TFL. Tough to hit fa after a year like that. Might as well give yourself one more shot to get a legit payday

He’ll be 26 in September, still young. He’s betting on himself and likely feels real good about his role heading into this season. If he can bounce back and do better than his career-best 2022, he can command much more guaranteed money by next offseason. It’s a calculated risk and I hope it works out for him.

Welkers offer with Broncos was slightly less than Pats. Yes the Pats offer had less guarantees and required incentives but the offer was higher.

He was upset the Pats didn't give more due to the fact that he was earning less than market value but never demanded a new contract.

In the end he left the Pats for less money so the opposite of Uche who stayed with the Pats for less money

On the other hand I think it was smart. Here he gets $2MM guaranteed, but the chance to earn $6MM more if he has just a good season. Next season he'll have Judon Young and barmore plus a lot aggressive rush opportunities.

So if he has a good season he not only gets close to 8 million in 24. But an 8 figure/ long-term contract as a sought after FA or extension from the Pat's.

The Pat's get an EXTREMELY motivated situational rusher in a very good edge rotation. This is a guy who believes in himself. THOSE are the guys who we want on this team.
