Give the coaching staff some time to work Mac into it. He's fast, but it's the first game. He'll be running those plays by the middle of the season.

Bacon Bits ...

Where to start? What a weird game ... Which favors Miami imo. I've mentioned it on several occasions that Miami is tough but a weird @ass team. Comfortable being uncomfortable, fighting in close games, dog fights.

• Mac was excellent considering this was obviously his first start. Only one "wtf" play early on. He looked the part physically and mentally. I love his killer attitude but I really hope he can detach from certain plays. After the game and a few time this summer he looked red in the face, visibly upset. There's a fine line. He's invested, committed and down for the cause. Just hope he's not sweating the small stuff bc the big picture looks great. Very strong showing today all around. Some people are harder on themselves but he should be proud so far.
• Few batted passes, think he missed a hot, I'll have to look again, one shakey pass on an in-breaking route, missed Meyers but again no dumb plays. No plays that hurt or could have hurt besides early on. He could definitely amp up his movements all-around, get the ball out a lil quicker. He was poised, alert and vocal in the pocket. The most encouraging part of the day was how he handled the pressure Miami sent. He was great vs the blitz in college but obviously this league is different. Overload, delayed, stunts ... As the game went on Miami unleashed pressure in different ways. DB's rushing, Miami would mugg up the interior, drop the closest LB and rush the other on a delayed blitz. He was steady and didn't flinch. Took a few big boy hits standing tall. 9/12 on 3rd down. Navigated through the traffic and bodies. Showing nice command and being vocal on the line. Moving his protection. Mac was great, again big picture looks very good. The rest of the team let him down.
• OL was ok but could have been a lot better. Onwenu & Shaq let up or were late on a few stunts. Shaq had a penalty, Wynn had one although it was pretty weak. Not bad but could have been better. The Wynn one was kinda weak. Looked like a slingshot block, Packers Bak is great at it. Your using the other man to sling yourself past him so it's easy to see refs reach when they see contact. Lots of good stuff but they were inconsistent. You can both sides are getting uses to each. Esp when it comes to stunts. Communication will take time but that's what made the left side so good.
• Very nice to see Barmore making noise this early. He made them double him opening up 1 on 1's for a few others. His quickness is evident and a real problem for IOL. Led to several 1 on 1 for Judon & Uche. Both lined up wide, over G's. Phillips made a few nice plays up close to the los and one that I could see in coverage. No hesitation close to the line and in coverage. That's still a hill Dugger is looking to get over. A little too hesitant, caught flat footed when he's not supposed to be. It's tough he's learning a new position but I'm hoping he makes strides by the end of the year.
• Noticed a few post about Tua and slants. Not many are better, college or pro at throwing that pass. If you've watched you know, if not you'll see it in the future. He just has that route perfected, timing is dead nuts. Very tough to stop, he has a lot of confidence throwing it. It's a pretty pass but annoying as hell that we essentially lost on defending slant/flat but here we are. Again watching Tua and those that charted him, he was just money hitting that route.
• Fins are a tough team, tough team to figure out but they're NE South all over again. Multiple and versatile in all phases or at least that's what they're aiming for on both sides. Some really nice pressure designs late in the game. You can tell Flores didn't trust his OL. They were to widen the edges with TE on offense but it was clear they wanted to help their OL with heavy sets. Only Gesicki was running routes. Again like us they might play a lot of 12p one game, like yesterday but try to utilize 11 the next week when it's going to take more than 17-20 points to win. It was typical Fins/Pats in a lot of regards. Ugly, close game that could have gone either way.
• I thought Josh might have been a little too conservative with Mac early on but we passed almost 40 times. It was just that the gash/chunk plays weren't there enough or early on. Saying that, we're just not set up in terms of targets to really effectively take shot after shot with the guys we have. Besides Agholor who's skilled and savvy enough to do it on a consistent basis? My biggest problem was not utilizing the two TE we just got early on. The whole idea of taken advantage of 12p is passing out of it not running. It's the matchups you have when a team is in base like Miami was a lot of time. We have the targets, QB that thrives in that area of the field. It would be a shame not to go all in if we're healthy and aren't forced to change. Defenses aren't ready to handle it for a full game, full season. It's all there in front of you Josh. It's one of the first things I mentioned in this thread on the 1sr 2nd page but it's so important for this teams success. Throw out of 12p, throw to your RB's early on (we did this but could amp in up earlier) and work PA. This offense is set to jump off doing these things.

Saw this live and thought Phillips might have been hurt. Bill def liked him predraft imo and has respect for him. Super talented but just a lot of concussion concerns.




Overall the team and coaches let Mac down. Fumbles, penalties - even if one or two were bogus, not utilizing some of our best weapons early, more chunk plays (15+ yards) that lost this game. Weird game though. Not a lot of drives, no rhythm and lots of moving parts on both sides. We outshines them and more yards per play I believe but could be wrong. Again just sloppy play around Mac and coaching - top to bottom could have been better.

Biggest takeaway is obviously Mac but this team and coaching staff should be pissed and ready for war next week. Not often we see sloppiness like that two weeks in a row.

OL was not in sync at all. Interior, Tackles, not good. Flores didn't hold back much but we definitely need to communicate better. You can tell it's not there yet. Chain was loose yesterday.

Because while Jones put up some comfortably impressive box score numbers, the context of the flow of the game gives these numbers even more meaning: The Patriots did a terrific job of protecting Jones from his own inexperience. And to help further craft a record-setting environment on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins seemed plenty content to play along, offering New England space underneath to work the ball before rallying to tackle and living to fight another down.

Next Gen Stats clocked Jones’ average time from snap to release as the sixth-fastest in all of football in Week 1 (2.54s on average). His average intended air yards per attempt of 6.3 yards per attempt was the seventh-lowest in the league in Week 1. Only 10.3% of his attempts were classified as “aggressive” throws; attempts made to a player with a defender within 1-yard of the target. And only five quarterbacks threw shorter to the first down marker on average across all of their attempts on Sunday than Jones’ -3.0 air yards to the sticks per attempt.
This isn’t meant to diminish Jones’ play on Sunday, though. It is more so to amplify what the Patriots are asking their young quarterback to do. Jones was mentally sharp, he was in control at the line of scrimmage, and he clearly knew the right places to go with the football. But situationally, the Patriots needed more from Jones than what they got; which is exactly the shoes you’d expect to find a rookie quarterback in.

The DNA of this Patriots offense is going to put Jones in a lot of advantageous situations. Opposing defenses are often going to be reeling against New England’s ability to run the football, setting Jones up to be a very proficient play-action passer in 2021 and beyond while simultaneously continuing to manufacture open targets for him to distribute the football to. He’s going to have success in this kind of environment, no doubt. But the question becomes what the ceiling is for Jones, at least early on in his career, when the team runs into a defensive mirror of themselves, as they did in facing Miami in Week 1?

The smoking gun from Week 1? New England’s drives and point production:

• 14 plays, 65 yards, 7 minutes of possession. Field goal.
• 14 plays, 67 yards, 8 minutes of possession. Field goal.
• 14 plays, 57 yards, 5 and a half minutes of possession. Field goal.

These drives stalled at Miami’s 9, 24, and 15-yard lines, respectively.

New England didn’t get that final product from Jones in Week 1. That’s fine. It was his first career start. But Jones’ development and his ability to help push New England as a playoff contender will be rooted in how he grows in these areas moving forward because the stuff between the 20s? That’s going to take care of itself. New England’s ground game and Josh McDaniels are going to see to that.

Exactly. I'm yelling at the TV every time I see one of these plays...it takes 30 minutes just to get to the LOS. Only do lateral plays if you have speed at RB. I don't like seeing Smith trying those either...he almost died in one play. Taylor should carry the rock in those instances.

I thought Miami had good WR's that gave our secondary problems , Gaskin their RB had some good plays , the Miami secondary was solid , probably only the Miami OL was their weak spot. Very encouraged with Mac.

As a college freshman in the National Championship game against GA Saban shocked everyone by putting Tua in for starter Jalen Hurts at halftime and Tua improbably somehow pulled out the win and Championship by taking some risks that must have almost caused heart failure for Saban. While it helped his confidence, unfortunately for the Fins after being the hero so early he still lapses into “Hero Ball”, tries to make something happen that isn’t there and throws the ball up for grabs. If he can learn to play with more discipline (like Mac already seems to) and if he can avoid injuries (that is a major “if”) could be trouble in the future.

Regarding the coaching, I think we Pats fans are used to having a coaching advantage in each game. But, BB doesn’t bat 1000 of course, and Flores (who knows the Pats inside and out) really had the Fins prepared, and the Pats appeared to be out-coached in this game.

…Plus, I really didn’t like the look of Flores on the sideline, he looked distressingly competent and in control. Fortunately the owner seems like a bit of an idiot, hopefully he will screw things up for the Fins.

Yeah I'd rather just run stretch plays with Harris & Rham. JJ should be active. We need that creativity and complement to the big boys.

They threw a lot at Mac. Esp late in the game. A lot for his first game. Deep down I bet Flores was impressed bc Mac had one bad/dumb play and handled everything accordingly. He definitely could have helped himself a little more with not taking a few shots and a few other things but I'm thinking Flores was impressed with Mac after his 1st game.

He's been great for them. The moves he makes tells me he has the respect of the players and front office. Said it before I'm not rooting for them but happy when he finds success. It's incredibly hard to make it in this league.

Also seems like he's the best of Bill's bunch by far.
