Patriots trade for Ravens CB Shaun Wade

Possible interpretations:
  • Gilmore is hurt long term, or at least a few games
  • Gilmore is going to be traded
  • Jones is hurt long term, or at least a few games
  • The Pats were approached by the Ravens about a reserve OL, and asked for this guy in return
  • The Pats really liked this guy coming out, saw he was going to be buried on the bench by the Ravens, asked them about him, and gave up an OL they were going to cut anyway
  • The Pats are down on one or more of their young CB's
  • One of the two players involved needs a change of scenery for reasons we'll probably never know about
  • Edit for Ice comment above: Slater is retiring
What else?

You don't suppose this move is more about special teams, do you? Maybe Slater retiring? It wouldn't be the first time they've gone to the Ravens for a ST guy.

If he is active he will play a lot on special teams but there is no reason to think this move says anything about another player.

Like the move bc i was really disappointed about DB depth. Without Gilmore it was exposed to the bone.

Not sure how much this will help but unfortunately no one of Pats depth pieces showed any kind of progress in 2 years and position of strength turned into potential biggest weakness despite significant draft investments in previous yrs.

Never understood the crowd noise to sell Gillmore. It would be a rough ride wo him despite great turn in front 6..

Hey we're finally stealing one from the Ravens instead of the other way around. I like this depth addition. He has some upside. And we only gave up a 7th plus a 5th.

Article about Wade:

He was burnt toast in the CFP Championship game trying to cover Smith. But then, so were most corners trying to cover him. I had a 4th on him prior to the draft. Hopefully he didn’t do anything that would cause the Ravens to unload him. Hopefully it’s just because of their deep defensive backfield.
From what I read he was a projected first round pick going into 2020 then opted out, opted back in, then had a rough season. Hopefully the bad season was a fluke and he looks like he did in 2019.

I don't get the Ravens here... you don't cut a 5th round pick unless that pick really sucks. I just find it hard to believe that they were planning to cut him.

On top of that, it's not like they're flipping him for a higher pick either. They are basically swapping their 2021 5th round pick for a 2023 5th round pick for a 2022 7th round pick. So they swapped 5th round picks in exchange for a 7th round pick? That's almost giving him away.

Depth. That's my guess. The next shoe though is what this means for Mills, Williams, Bryant and M. Jackson right before cut down day (if anything at all)?

Typical wheeling and dealing though right before cuts with more to follow after cuts I'm sure. Last fifth of the roster (or so) always in flux.

More of these types of moves to come.

Ravens are really DEEP at CB. I think the Pats just took advantage of an opportunity here to upgrade where the Ravens felt this guy could be on the bubble just because of all the depth they had. It feels like a shrewd low cost pickup for the Pats who gain a player with upside when one of their main CBs just came up with an injury.

Yeah, he was very solid in 2019. The 2020 season was a rough one for him. Maybe because Ohio State waited to play football until almost November (still no clue why they got a playoff bid when they played half the games of other conferences, but I digress). He was still a team captain, though. Low risk/potential high reward trade.

Zo was alleging that this trade had more to do with Jon Jones and his going down today..

But then why even draft him? In the 5th round no less? I get that you should draft the best available player but not if you're going to dump him before the preseason ends.

Did they think one of their projected starters was going to tank 2 games into preseason or did one of them have a nagging injury that turned out to be nothing? Maybe they tried to trade one of their vet CBs and no one took the bait? This is just odd.

I can just see the hysteria here if Bill traded away one of our recent draft picks like this. :)

Supposedly he had turf toe last season but played through it

I’ve been working all day so didn’t hear about Jones’ injury but if it happened today, I doubt that this trade has anything to do with it. It has probably been in the works for a few days.
