I won’t blame Newton for the strip as Wynn got torched by Young, but other than that he looked exactly the way he looked last season, and that’s not good for his future, or the Patriots as long as he is the QB.
Wynn torched himself by looking inside just before and at the snap. That cost him a split second, which is enough for a good pass rusher to win the battle. It wasn’t Young’s technique that forced pressure.

Watching last night's Meyers catch/non-catch, I've heard the theory that BB wanted to see how Jones would handle the 3rd down scenario and keep the flow of the game going.....BUT previously, wasn't it Ernie Adams' job to be the eyes in the sky and alert BB when to challenge a play?. With Ernie retired, who has that job now?? Was it a screwup or an intentional plan to not throw the red flag??? Just curious.....

I'm convinced it was an intentional plan (well, not so much a plan like they orchestrated the whole thing, but an intentional non-challenge). But to answer your question, that's one of the things that people think Patricia might be involved in. He was up in the booth for this game I think.

It absolutely 100% was Young's technique- he himself said that he spent all off-season working on his hands. That was a mean punch-dip he laid on Wynn.

The arm strength thing is overrated anyway. The Pats are not a down the field type of offense. Even with Brady, they were mostly a short and intermediate passing attack. Other than 2007, the Pats were never the type of team that passed a ton down the field. Brady was always surgical by marching the team down the field with a thousand paper cuts rather than going directly for the throat.

In other offenses, arm strength is more of an issue. But not in the Patriots' offense.
I think with Aghalor and Mac's accuracy they will become a more down the field offense.

I'm reading a lot about Jones and his arm strength. It's a legitimate question, so let me just toss out a couple of things:

  1. Jones needs to strengthen his core and his legs, and that will improve his throwing power
  2. Jones has the arm strength to toss perfect 40+ yard passes deep down the left sideline
  3. The questions for Jones are going to be "Can he fit a window at 15-20 yards downfield if it's not an anticipation throw?" and "Can he hit the deep out?"
  4. Judging arm strength on touch passes, which is what most anticipation throws are, is usually a very bad idea

The arm strength talk makes me laugh. You know who has GREAT arm strength? Lamar Jackson. You know who cannot throw a touch pass to save his life? Lamar Jackson. You know who cannot find the open receiver down field and overthrows him by 2 feet? Lamar Jackson.

Yet, every pundit likes Lamar Jackson because he has all the athletic qualities. Same with Cam back in the day. Those guys are GREAT athletes and will dominate on their athletic ability alone. They are also VERY fun to watch and will sell a lot of shirts. However, when the pressure is on and they need to rely on their reads and on making the smart play, they look like ****.

I'll take a limited guy like Mac Jones who masters the mental aspects of being a QB before a super athlete with low football IQ. Of course, you'd prefer someone that has both, but that would mean you would have Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers. I'll settle for poor man's Brady/Manning/Brees. Remember the critics about Brady. "Skinny, not strong enough, cannot run". Not saying that Mac will be TB12, nobody likely will ever be, but I firmly believe he has what is needed to be successful in this league. What does "successful" means? Top 5? Top 10? I do not know, but I know he will at least be an above average starter. Will he head a new dynasty? Probably not. But I think we can win one with him.

Macamania has run amok.

Jets fans and their latest HOF QB have nothing on this place after the Pats cream puff practices and a pre season game.
so...2-15?....maybe 4 or 5 wins? cut Jones and try the draft next year when they have a top 3 pick? share your wisdom with us lowly sub-Jete fans....

Another note that I think needs posting, in a "let's not overreact" sort of way, is that Stevenson's long TD run was all about the blocking. He went completely untouched going through the defense. Washington didn't lay a hand on him until he had a full head of steam, downfield, along the sideline.

He was hitting them at Bama. So I don't see why he couldn't do that here.

He did have that one pass where he fired it in to a very tight window between two defenders to Bourne (maybe?). 12-15 yards. Ball had some zip on it.

Brady didn’t have great arm strength coming out of college. He improved his technique, but also put on muscle.

If Mac can improve his physique from this…

maybe it will improve his velocity a bit. Just a little improvement could make a meaningful difference.

I just laugh at that pic. Jesus.

In all seriousness, when was that taken?

With that dad bod he looks like he should have two or three kids already. Just saying.
