Guess we gotta give the blind squirrel his due, it was Volin who got the quote:

Seems his wife has a pretty good perspective on things. A quick google suggests he's pulled in $29M over his years. He was getting starter money for a bit there in CLE. He doesn't have to work ever again, especially not for the hours and wages a NFL QB coach would make. It's smarter to keep the wife happy rather than give her half of everything in a divorce.

He's going to get paid much less once he is no longer in the NFL...and that could be very soon. He could get paid $100k+ as a coach or do something that has nothing to do with football like sitting at a desk and make less.

And just the fact that you want players on your own team to fail is a weird concept to me. I want all the players to succeed and to be the best they can be. That makes the team better.

the bottom line is that the smartest guy in the room says Cam is the starter right now.

But there's a bunch of people here doing great Felger and Mazz imitations
most of us aren't saying Cam isn't the starter right now, or won't start the season. what I AM saying is that it's TBD whether Cam will be any better than last year in real games, and I doubt he will. therefore, if we're suffering through mediocre, we may as well get the learning curve started with the one QB who has a shot at lasting beyond 2021 here. I'm not saying that means start Mac week 1, but if we're under .500 after week 6, and Cam isn't throwing well, then I don't want to wait until after the late bye to try out Mac.

Guess you never had to endure Tony Eason then...
Ha :|) i was just about around... But did you not want Eason to play better? If Eason could have somehow developed into a great quarterback you would rather that didn't happen and would rather he failed?

I love seeing new young Pats give genuine respect to the guys who built the dynasty. Bruschi is one of my all time favorite Patriots. He went from 3 years of ST obscurity to captain of the Defense of Dynasty 1, from Parcells to Carroll to BB, he was his own agent, always team first, undersized and overmatched physically but always overcame with heart and instinct. And, most important for me, he was a career Patriot - not too many go an entire career with us. That's why Teddy and Troy, Faulk, JE11 are my all-time Patriots (Slater and DMC could join that list soon)
I was an AOLe when Tedy was drafted and I remember a fan of his coming to the Pats site and telling us that we'd be surprised at how good he is as a player. The guy was right.

My favorite Patriot was, and probably always will be, Troy Brown.

Eason WAS the best he could be...made the team WORSE. Long time season ticket holder back then sittng in Section 206 with at least fifty tailgate buddies...to a man we ALL wanted Grogan over that little pansy Eason. Grogan MADE THE PATS TEAM BETTER. Get it?

Why do so many fans think that some of us don't want Cam to play well. Of course we do. We just aren't too confident that he will.

Reading Lance's camp reports he sounds all world. Then I watched a video of what was described as a "video game ridiculousness" throw. It was nice but not to warrant that description. He basically rolled out of the pocket as it was collapsing on a play action (it appeared, tough to tell the way the video was shot) and threw a nice ball ball about 45-50 yards to a wide open receiver. So I am not sure if the hype out of SF about him is fully warranted or wishful thinking or a little of both.

*Edit*: forgot to add that as of yesterday he only had one rep with the 1's. Which is the throw I described above. Not sure how many reps have been against the 1's on Defense.

Fields now has full grasp of calling the plays in the huddle, according to him. And according to Nagy he is now able to actually see and understand the play he is calling in his head versus simply calling out the play in the huddle. Which by itself was an apparent struggle up until recently, according to his own words. Very glad we don't have Fields. He has another Ohio St QB bust written all over him.

Lawrence seems to be up and down as you would expect from a rookie thrown to the wolves early on. He does benefit from practicing against a terrible defense.

From what I have read on Wilson it's been a mixed bag as well.

So in other words typical rookie QB ****.
The video I saw was Lance was going backwards as he threw the ball across his body for 40-45 yards on target a la Mahomes.

Agree.

It was very much like Mahomes.

That kinda arm strength is a gift from the gods.

Mate you are the one that isn't getting it... I'm talking about players like Harry that haven't lived up to expectations that are having good camps yet some fans actively want them to not succeed and improve. And the Eason improvement was obviously hypothetical to demonstrate the point rather than based on real events

I do think some don't and perhaps it's more with Harry than with Cam.

Because if a player surpasses expectations the team has a decent player who can contribute which will help the team win games? If Harry can be a physical player who can be an asset in he red zone and possibly be close to the player we thought we were drafting why wouldn't you want that? It would make our receiver group better. Why wouldn't a fan want that? To want to have a weaker receiver group and see a player flop seems odd.
Ok, so the issue is that you don't grasp the meaning of the word "odd". Great, we can move on.

To be totally honest, Volin isn't as bad as he used to be. He still sucks, but there have been fewer "Kraft Mac & Cheese" incidents in the last couple year, at least as far as I've noticed.

Assuming Nelson, Meyers, Bourne, and Gunner are locks, Harry will probably have to have an incredible camp to beat out Wilkerson, given the latter’s expected contributions as a gunner on ST.

So Harry has to have an “incredible camp” (whatever that means) to beat out Wilkerson for a spot on the 53 because talking to Slater a couple of times during practice makes it a lock that Wilkerson is going to be an elite gunner?

Shouldn’t we at least watch Wilkerson play the gunner role in an NFL game before we give him props for being such an boss as a special-teams player? King’s injury history makes him a big question mark but at least he has shown that he can be an elite gunner at the highest level, so he will likely I’ll be giving strong consideration for a special teams only spot.

Also, Harry has shown himself to be an excellent blocker. That probably holds significant weight for their head coach, when the offense is expected to be run heavy. Wilkerson may end up beating out Harry for a roster spot but he will have to clearly beat him out as a wide receiver first and foremost.

Of all the QB controversies, the Eason/Grogs/Flutie situation was fascinating to live through.

1983- Grogan is bood mercilessly but was not the problem
1984- Eason lights it up but fizzles out at the end of the season. The calls for Grogs grow louder
1985-Eason starts the season, gets hurt, Grogs wins 7 of 8, Eason helps them to the SB
1986- Eason is outstanding, gets hurt on MNF, Grogs comes in and wins the division.
1987- Eason is a greedy ***** with his contract BS. Grogs comes in and is jerked around.
1988- Same as 1988 but Flutie did OK as a backup. At that point he was a better option than Grogs

Jeff George and Jamarcus Russell say “hey”.

One more throw like that in practice against no pass rushers and some on this site will be frothing at the mouth, outraged that Belichick didn’t cough up more than the three first round picks that SF gave up in order to get up to #3 to take Lance.

That's because there's a bunch of morons on this board who don't understand football and the significance of an offseason especially when it comes to the Qb position. Cam was out football for an entire year before he signed with the Pat's and had virtually no offseason in a Covid year and you dumbasses want to continue to act like that had no effect on not only Cam but the Patriots as a team in general. It's actually hilarious at how many of you have a single digit IQ when it comes to football. I can't wait until Cam makes you guys eat your words the only sad thing is Cam is going to get this team to the playoffs and the cry baby undeserving ass Pat's fans will still get to celebrate after trashing him for an entire year. Absolutely pathetic.

Same was said about Stidham. Looks smooth. Strong arm. Looks smooth. Strong arm..
I think pfk's point still stands. Why not give the kid some reps over Hoyer?

Few things as endearing as a Johnny come lately throwing accusations as such. Thankfully, there's the ignore button.
