Semi OT: Chandler Jones requests trade

If we ran a defense like Arizona where we just let him pin his ears back and rush the passer on every play and let him walk I would have been much more annoyed. What he was asked to do here seemed to wear him down physically as the season went on and he seemed to fizzle out. He was always a good player here but he was an elite pass rusher with Arizona because they let him do the one thing he is really good at and stripped away the other things we had him doing. I will always get somewhat annoyed when we hit on a draft pick then don't sign him to a second contract but this one I understood.

This.

Chandler's per game numbers here got worse after Veterans Day

When we drafted Hightower and Chandler Jones in the first..at that moment I told myself I'd have to choose 'my guy' soon because there's no way bill was going to pay for both long term.

I still wear my Hightower jersey present day

A dozen guys huh?

Sacks are measured because that means the player actually got to the QB forcing a guaranteed negative play. Nobody measures a guy based on almost getting to a QB.

Most Pats fans on here are in denial or don’t like it when a player actually does well when leaving and Jones is that rare player. Since leaving the Pats, he’s been in conversation for DPOTY several times and either leading the league in sacks or being close to it. You’re not getting sacks at the rate he has just being just a “good solid” player. Some fans on here can’t admit he was misused in NE.

It’s funny how this board will take a guy good for 12-15 sacks a year and down play him over a guy who barely musters 6-8 sacks a year.
Yep, including the guy who was on the line beside him when he got there in 2016. I like Jones's play a lot - he's a good solid DE. HOF is another matter entirely. Jones has had a couple of really good years - I was a fan when he was in NE, but never a big fan (particularly with the "incident"), because o the stretch fade that many here were complaining about every year.

I never saw him as a game-changer, a la, McGinnist, HT, Khalil Mack, Calais Campbell, Aaron Donald, Vince Wilfork, etc., etc., etc. I'm happy for him that he's had a great career, but I never once thought of him as a hall of fame player. I think more of Trey Flowers, personally, and it's got nothing to do with whatever the hell you're talking about regarding former Pats players.

I'd take Jones back on a reasonable deal. I'd LOVE Flowers back. I think him a more complete player on the DE, particularly on the system the Pats play.

Perhaps so, but extension deals can be struck to the satisfaction of both player and team. I wouldn't call it a fait accompli.
However DE is not a position where the Patriots typically do big money extensions (Jones and Flowers as demonstrative to this point). As this is also widely known, the pendulum swings to the player (well, the agents) tending to defer extension discussions at that position with the Pats.

IIRC at the time the rap on Chandler was that he didn’t want to play the role the Pats wanted him to be playing. He wanted to rush the passer and put up big sack numbers and otherwise make big plays by freelancing instead of being disciplined in his assignments. I’m not sure if his numbers fell off because he got worn down or if he lost enthusiasm over not being able to do it his way without repercussions.

Kendrick Bourne wants him to return to NE.

Agree completely about this. If I recall, Jones was drafted in 2012, one year after the Patriots brought in those 4-3 pure pass rush ends like Andre Carter and Mark Anderson. They were really more of a 4-3 base unit at that time then they had been. They run a lot of 4-3 now, but the whole defense has changed with a base nickel or big nickel, so it isn’t really the same. Back to the point: Jones seemed to be ideal as their Freeney/Mathis guy on the outside, doing nothing but disrupting the QB.

I think it was SB49 when Wilson juked him out (that ridiculous drive right before halftime) when I realized how much of a one-trick pony he was. This guy could get 25 sacks and still isn’t worth it. He doesn’t make defenses much better even at his best. Sign me up for an elite CB or 2-gap DL any day of the week.

If you find a way to guarantee he'll get 25 sacks, I'll say that he's absolutely worth the cash.

Yeah…a bit of an exaggeration.
As a Jane Austen fan, I'm almost 100% guaranteed to respond to that sort of statement. It always calls this

``Mr. Bennet, how can you abuse your own children in such way? You take delight in vexing me. You have no compassion on my poor nerves.''

``You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these twenty years at least.''

``Ah! you do not know what I suffer.''

``But I hope you will get over it, and live to see many young men of four thousand a year come into the neighbourhood.''

``It will be no use to us if twenty such should come, since you will not visit them.''

``Depend upon it, my dear, that when there are twenty I will visit them all.''

to mind.

Ha ha! Good reference there.

I thought that was more the knock on Jamie Collins. Yet Collins also came back and won a ring, so you never know...

That was Jamie Collins (drive sequence begins at 9:54)...

of course, I'd love to see him come back - he's as good as anyone on that DL (though I really love Judon's game) and would help the team a lot. And BB could use him to his strengths with a solid supporting cast. But not for outrageous money that straps the Pats elsewhere.

Yeah it’s not happening.
