Brian Hoyer “The Destroyer” Returns

Hoyer to train Max Jones. Cheap way to prevent the Jets from getting the Pats playbook.

Well, for one thing, he's better than you think. For another, he's familiar with the system and can help Jones. For another, if Jones is ahead of where the Patriots thought he'd be, it's at least theoretically possible that Cam is not long for the team.
Maybe I am letting that Chiefs game skew my perception of Hoyer but he made Cam look like Patrick Mahomes with that performance. As for Cam I think the only way he isn't around is if Mac blows him away in camp but even if that happens I would still want a more capable backup than Hoyer. Hoyer's only redeeming quality in all this is he knows the system and has been around forever which makes me wish he would just retire and come in as a coach but one would think he is making much more money this way so good for him.

Ultimately, this is a camp body signing and has no bearing on Newton/Jones.
I don't want it to have any bearing on Stidham either.

Hoyer's finished as a legit NFL player...If he wants to be on the PS with Zero chance of Ever being recalled Ever Again, they why not I guess...
But when TC ends should be when his career as a coaching intern begins...

My theory behind the move as it has multiple potential outcomes

Hoyer knows THE offense better than any of the QBs in the room and can help/mentor all 3 QBs as the team does not have a QB coach. Bill and JMD see a ton of value in that

If Mac wins the job, Cam will bolt. That means BB will keep Stid and Hoyer.

If Cam wins the job, Mac is #2 and Stid will be cut thus Hoyer becomes the mentor for Mac

If Hoyer is cut and the 3 others stay, he may retire and stay on as an offensive assistant to mentor Mac and maybe Stid, hell maybe Cam as well.

They also could decide to cut Stid and Hoyer and bring in a better backup QB to slot into #2 in 2022 when Mac becomes #1. Hoyer may stay on as an assistant coach
Stidham is in no man's land at this point. They clearly don't see him as a starter and it doesn't seem like they think he will help Mac much in the QB room either. Unless he makes some sort of drastic jump I can't see him on the roster if Hoyer is actually in the mix.

The thing with Cam is we were told all year how great he was in the locker room and what a leader he was. Did all that go out the window when they took Mac or do they not think Cam is capable of mentoring Mac the way they would like? At this point we have three crappy QB's and a rookie. Like I said in my other post I hope that Hoyer will come in as a coach and not take up a roster spot.

Pats always have 4 QB’s in camp, last year it was Brian Lewenke or whatever his name was. There’s no better QB available for this particular team and offense. I don’t get all the handwringing...

I have no problem with Hoyer as a Camp Arm Period...I would've kept Dolegala too; other teams with 90-man off-season rosters have 5 QBs on them...

(UPDATE: Only the 49ers have more than 4, but the majority of teams do have 4.)

I just don't want to seem him here in a regular-season game...Ever. Again.

That was the hardest to watch as a Patriot fan.
The man does not draw excitement or hope as a QB.

Stidham at least has time to possibly - though not very likely - improve...
That’s not saying much. An improvement for Stidham would be one INT in a losing effort.

Oh man, Mac10 starting by game 4 would be just about the juciest headline matchup the media could ever ask for.

Maybe I am letting that Chiefs game skew my perception of Hoyer but he made Cam look like Patrick Mahomes with that performance.

As I've already noted, Cam had 5 games last year where he put up a worse passer rating than Hoyer. So the notion that Hoyer made Cam look like Mahomes is crazy talk.

Belichick wanted Hoyer for one reason or another. Several reasons are possible. Time will likely tell us which it was.

I know I've said this before, but every time I think of Hoyer now, I go back to that KC game where he made those huge mental mistakes.
Yep & that 2016 playoff game vs KC. Woof..

What? We are not talking about some walk-on. We are talking about a QB who has been with us the second longest behind Brady over the past 20 years. He is not getting cut from the final 53.

I certainly hope he is.

I'd rather have Stid as the #3 than him.

He's finished as a legit NFL QB everywhere else...but here...

After he's bequeathed his considerable system knowledge to Jones, he should then begin the next phase of his football career: as a coaching intern.

But we already had 3 QBs. There isn't that many reps to begin with for 3 QBs much less 4.

Sure there are...Most teams have 4 QBs on their pre-season rosters: 10 AFC teams including us, and 11 NFC teams including San Francisco, who currently have 5.

It would, but I kinda doubt that Bill would allow that to happen, unless we're 0-3 heading into that game.

Stidham is an accurate passer, his problem is happy feet. He dances like a cat on a live wire when pressure is on. Last year in a blowout and to start the Chiefs game he looked comfortable and made the throws, then he felt the slightest bit of pressure and threw to the wrong team.

One day he may wake up and lose his yips but the team won’t wait for him. He only has another year deal left on his rookie deal after this one and hasn’t earned an extension, so his revival may come elsewhere.

That is an interesting take. But I do think Hoyer will work well with Mac Jones. There can't be a better teacher. Hoyer knows what he is and there will not be any competition between the two.

It's a fascinating move on so many levels. Lots of potential reasons for the move.

Yep. Cats and Cucumbers. Thats Stidham.
