Still No # 1WR

Doesn't almost every NFL team, and certainly almost every good NFL team, put all of their eggs in one basket at the QB position? QB plays every snap unless garbage or gimmick time, after all.
No.

The Colts, for example, made damn sure that Manning was never left as a solo act. They made sure he had guys like Wayne, Harrison, James, etc...

Ah, see I could have misinterpreted what he was trying to say, but the way I read the "eggs in one basket" was that you want more good WR rather than 1 great WR and a bunch of mediocre ones. I read it as an endorsement of intra-positional depth, rather than inter-positional emphasis (if that makes sense).

Even at QB, teams strive to have adequate backups. There's an enormous difference when you're talking about an elite QB v. his backup, but that'll be true at every position. If Ray Lewis is your starting linebacker, none of his backups are going to be sufficient "intra-positional depth". It's the nature of sport, particularly in a salary capped sport.

If you want to make the argument that BB didn't spend on as many high end players as other teams, and got lucky because his G.O.A.T. QB was willing to play for less than he could have gotten on the open market, and was capable of making up for significant offensive deficiencies in a way that no other QB of his era was able to do, that's one thing, and I'd agree that there's a point to be made there. If you want to argue that there was some massive "eggs" difference, that's a whole different thing, and I'd point to reality showing it not to be true, even beyond the QB position (See Welker and Talib for examples).

We have now gone through free agency and the draft and surprisingly we still do not have anything close to a # 1 receiver on the team. High concern as there is no deep threat or a player that can "take the top" off the defense.
Its not Agholor, Bourne or Jakoby Myers that is for sure. Edelman's retirement has made this even more of a huge hole.
Now all that is left is for the June first other teams' castoffs to choose from. I think this was a big oversight and will limit how effective Cam can be and also the TE's ceilings.

Teams will be able to stack the middle and cover the seams and center of the field on short and intermediate roots.
I think more capital should have been spent on this in the draft.

The other teams in the AFC East have spent mightily on this over past 2 years

1. Bills- Stefan Diggs
2. Dolphins Jaylon Waddle
3. Jets- Corey Davis and Elijah Moore.

I still believe the pats offense will be somewhat anemic this year. Hopefully the defense, will cover for offense shortcomings.
Looks like addressing WR1 will have to wait until 2022.
we might not have a #1 WR, but we have 2 #1 TEs.

As noted up above, we were talking bout two different things.

Interpreting it the way I did, there's a difference between have a Hopkins who catches more than a 3rd of the passes and having a bunch of potential targets, or having a Barkley vs. a RBBC approach.

No, I was talking about it in both senses of the word. Y'all have fallen for myth.

The language is loose because the parameters are loose. When BB signs 5 million low end free agents, people talk about how he won't overpay on higher FAs so that he can have more depth. But, when BB cuts all but 2 of those low end free agents, that gets ignored. What also gets ignored is BB making Gronk the highest paid TE, or Wilfork the highest paid DT, or paying Revis huge money because other moves had failed, or giving AB a pretty big payout because he'd blown his WR bounty, etc...

And this is not to bag on BB. Everyone makes mistakes. This is just to point out that the "eggs" myth is just that.

Belichick will sign lower money free agents because Belichick can sign lower end free agents. Most will get cut because he can with minimal effect. Those that stay will be highly productive at lower cost. More trips to the plate means more hits and runs not more roster spots.

"Quantity is a quality onto itself"- Josef Stalin
"God fights on the side of the big battalions"- Napolean Bonaparte

Belichick made Gronk and Vince the highest paid at their position because Belichick showed great acumen at drafting superbly talented players who played superbly and were wisely compensated. Mistakes can't be farther from the truth.

Revis made $12 million in 2014. That was below market and a "prove it" contract coming off a sub par TB 2013 season.

Belichick has said on numerous occasions he prefers WR free agents because the evaluation process as a pro is more applicable than translating from the college ranks. Welker, Moss, Amendola......anyone?

And this is not to bag on you. Everyone makes mistakes (you are a patsfans poster child in that venue). This is just to point out that for years you have been on thread after thread and all you ever do it pull complete nonsense out of your azz and mistake it for valid arguments.

Just because the WR college evaluation process seems hard for BB to grasp does not mean it is hard for other teams or hard in general. There are misses at every position, but other teams seem able to draft quality and star WRs.

No single sports term has been argued more vehemently without a shared definition than "#1WR" by Pats fans.

wr Harry, 2022 second round pick and a 2023 second round pick for Jones of Atlanta,

1st round picks in 2022 and 2023, 2nd round puck in 2024 and newton to Green Bay for Rogers!

7th super bowl for us in early 2022!

Our roster is not dynamic at all. We are going to be a TE/RB heavy team with play action. We can win games with that for sure but against the good teams we will struggle mightily. We will not be up 14-3 on them, we will be down 2 scores. It is unbelievably difficult to play defense in this league with the rules that favor the passing game on top of dynamic offenses and QBs like the Bills, Chiefs, Browns, etc. Our margin is ridiculously small to compete. That being said, I am hopeful that this approach is just for now while Jones is learning and we become more dynamic as he matures like the Bills have with Josh Allen. That has to be the progression for us to compete in the AFC going forward IMO.

Honestly, apart from a QB who can run like Lamar Jackson, the Pats are constructing a Baltimore kind of offensive roster. Excellent RBs, a punishing offensive line, multiple quality TEs, and just enough receiving talent to throw into the mix. The difference is that Jones is nowhere near the kind of runner Jackson is (obviously), but Jones is also a much better thrower of the football than Jackson is.

Ahhhhh like the Patriots run an offense that like other teams don't, so like, ya know, like the Pats expect like different things from like their WR's.

Like just because other teams get like WR's with like stats doesn't like mean it will translate to like, ya know, Foxboro.

What does Ocho Cinco and Joey Galloway say about that?

How about, Welker, Amendola, Hogan, Moss, Lafell, Patton?

On the other hand, you are a resident expert concerning "hard to grasp", so if this is expert insight, we'll take it at face value.

Bill has said, and the numbers actually prove it out, that WR is the toughest position to draft and has the most busts. Yes there are misses at every position but there are more misses, league wide at wr.

Which one was better than Gronk last year.

#1 TE doesn't mean best TE in the league (which Gronk wasn't even that for the majority of 2020). It means you have a guy that can anchor the position and be a matchup problem for opposing defenses. Both Henry and Smith were that for their respective teams in 2020. Now they're both on the 2021 Patriots.

WR's are now coming much better NFL ready. What we need is colleges to run our offense and act like a farm team.

It's so unfortunate Malcolm Mitchell had the knee problems.

didn’t take a rocket scientist to identify AJ Browns college tape far exceeded Harriet’s

Here's Agholor doing it to the 2 secondaries that were in the SuperBowl

Nelson Ahlgolong

I wonder how many twitter conversations get accidentally started on #1WR

Another contender for dumbest statement of the year.

Except that it's a true statement; he did over-rule the scouts who recommended AJ Brown ahead of Harry.
