2021 NFL Free Agency/Trade News & Discussion: April Edition

We need a "May edition"

former Steeler Alejandro Villanueva is signing a two-year, $14 million deal with $8 million guaranteed with the Ravens.

The move was expected after Baltimore traded Orlando Brown Jr. to Kansas City last month. The signing did not happen until May 4 so that it would not count in the compensatory draft pick formula.

Expected, but I was kind of hoping he would sign somewhere else like Indy. Maybe he's not that good anymore.

Too bad, would have liked him back to compete for WR4/Agholor insurance. Career highs in rec and yards even with a run first offense and questionable QB play. But I'm guessing he wants a chance to get more looks, and with four new weapons theoretically ahead of him on the Pats, Chicago can probably offer him a better role.

Why THE **** couldn't he have re-signed here?!? Little Billy & the New Minions don't actually, honestly believe that our WR room no longer needs help, do they? Another snooze-and-you-lose moment for Mr Notgoat.

Good article by Zack Cox regarding free agents left on the market and potential Patriot interest...we have 6 open spots on the 90 man roster.

With weeks to go before the earliest possible on-field practice and six spots on New England’s 90-man roster currently vacant, the Patriots still could add a small collection of undrafted rookies. They also could fill out their roster by bringing on a few more veteran free agents.

A number of notable players have yet to find new homes since the NFL league year opened in mid-March. And with free agent signings no longer counting toward teams’ compensatory pick formulas as of Monday afternoon, many of them are likely to sign in the coming days and weeks.

Which ones might pique New England’s interest? The Patriots don’t have any glaring roster needs, but they could benefit from adding another proven talent at cornerback and/or wide receiver.

For the former, re-signing Jason McCourty remains a possibility. He’s one of the few 2020 Patriots free agents who have yet to land a new deal, and the Pats don’t have an obvious replacement for him at the No. 3 outside corner spot behind Stephon Gilmore and J.C. Jackson. McCourty’s twin brother, Devin, has one year left on his Patriots contract.

External options include Richard Sherman, Bashaud Breeland, Steven Nelson, Casey Hayward, Josh Norman, Darqueze Dennard and Gareon Conley.

As for available wideouts, that list features 2020 Patriot Damiere Byrd, Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald, Kenny Stills, Alshon Jeffery, Dede Westbrook and Danny Amendola (though we doubt Amendola would be welcome after his Super Bowl week comments).

Unsigned free agents at other positions include:

Offensive tackle: Alejandro Villanueva, Charles Leno, Russell Okung, Rick Wagner, Mitchell Schwartz, Eric Fisher, Dennis Kelly, Bobby Massie, Cameron Fleming, Jermaine Eluemunor

dge rusher: Melvin Ingram, Justin Houston, Ryan Kerrigan, Olivier Vernon, Everson Griffen, Trent Murphy, John Simon

Linebacker: K.J. Wright, B.J. Goodson, Avery Williamson, Josh Bynes, Neville Hewitt, Mychal Kendricks

Running back: Rex Burkhead, Le’Veon Bell, Todd Gurley, Duke Johnson

Safety: Tre Boston, Malik Hooker, Kenny Vaccaro, Bradley McDougald, Will Parks

Defensive line: Sheldon Richardson, Jurrell Casey, Kawann Short, P.J. Hall, Geno Atkins, Damon Harrison

The Patriots likely are set at most of those spots but could use another free safety to beef up their depth behind Devin McCourty.

Good list Ashley, thanks.

There will be some average to good veteran WR's released within the next 60 days...good enough for WR4 - WR6

OPTION 1
is a serious trade to compete with the top 3. This could happen any time between now and the trade deadline.

OPTION 2
is to acquire folks to try to unseat the mighty Harry. This person would also be competing with Nixon, Wilkerson and Zuber. This could happen any time before camp, especially when other teams are signing their draftees and getting under the cap.

Why would he want to come here and be the WR4, at best?

I liked Byrd well enough, but he's not playing over Agholor, Bourne, and Meyers.

After an excellent free agency and draft, the Patriots appear to be resting on their laurels.
The world champion Bucs are returning all their starters on offense and defense plus Antonio
Brown and most of their reserves. They appear to have a decent draft. Interesting, they
felt the need to invest in UDFAs and are still adding free agents.

I heard a possible explanation for this, this morning. The Patriots may be waiting on word of how camps will work. Last year, teams with 90 players couldn't all work together on the same day, while teams with a lower number (80?) could all work together.

Edit: PFT just posted an article about how this is what the Bills are doing:
