Player Signing Pats sign Jalen Mills

Just listened to Lazar's day 1 report and the only player he has some reservations on is Mills. He said he struggled at corner for the Eagles I presume due to lack of top speed coverage (hence moved to safety) however it was not a truely bad signing. OK, its only one guys opinion and time will tell if this has any real truth to it. An upgrade to Terrence Brooks.

Mills is a versatile DB who can play CB or S. It looks like a good move to reinforce a secondary that might later lose JC Jackson or Gilmore. next year. Our safeties aren't getting any younger either since both McCourty and Chung are 33. So Mills might end up starting with Dugger in 2022.

JC Jackson thankfully is going nowhere this year with that 1st round tender. So we're gonna have a good and deep secondary again in 2021.

I did not read that JC Jackson got the first round tender , I must have missed it somewhere.

Yea, per PFF he's a better safety than corner:

"One year after re-signing with the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year, $4 million deal, Mills cashes in on a long-term contract with the biggest buyers of the day thus far. He had his fair share of troubles at cornerback with Philadelphia, but he is coming off a career year after moving to safety in 2020. Mills ranked 29th among all safeties in PFF grade this past season.

However, this fit doesn’t make a whole lot of sense with some of the pieces already on New England’s roster. Mills brings the versatility to play at cornerback if needed, but even in 2020, he graded significantly worse on 200-plus snaps at outside cornerback than anywhere else on the field.

He fits best in a safety/slot role. However, the Patriots already have players Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips and the returning Patrick Chung in that area of the field. It’s a pretty big contract for a player who doesn’t profile as a significant upgrade to an already crowded positional group

He is on a 2 year 9M contract. That puts him around 30th CB based on cap hit. I really don't see how this is a big contract.

Jonathan Jones has a cap hit of 7.2M in this year alone. I don't know what the PFF guys are smoking but their takes on the Pats in the last couple days have been idiotic.

Wasn't a huge fan of the signing seeing the initial money but I think that is a pretty good deal for a versatile player.
Yes, should provide good depth.

And once again should show people to quit their *****in about how expensive these signings are until they actually see the contract. Time and again we have posters lose their minds until they see the actual break down.

If he plays for 2 years, he would make $12 million. Is that really that different from the initially reported number of 4 years for $24 million?

Third Rosenhaus client today to sign w PAts.. Who reps Judon???

EDIT- Drew of course......
Rosenhaus got a bad rap here & elsewhere for the Terrell Owens shenanigans in Philly, but he knows Bill well and knows how to make deals with him, instead of wanting to play the hard-ass like Condon...

I've got a good feeling about this signing. Do I have a reason why? No... :S I am feeling really good about it though. He has good size. Appears to have a lot of versatility, and is an immediate upgrade over Brooks and possssssibly last years Jmac?

Versatility in Mills' case only means that he isn't good enough to be either a boundary CB, slot CB, FS or (obviously) SS.

Jalen-of-all-Trades, master of none of them.

This is a dude you sign After the draft, if you still have a couple of holes in your backfield...and for much, MUCH less money than our dart-throwing, drunken sailor GM threw at him.

Only good news here is that the 2-year sh!t-stain of the Terry Brooks Error should now be wiped away.

Especially when the three players they mention are strong safeties, one of which didn't have much left before taking a year off and the starting free safety is up in years as well. Even if you disregard the flexibility aspect, the fit is plain as day.
