My two cents on Mariota was he started his career fairly promising and then fell off the cliff. His second year in the league, he threw for like 3500 yards, 26 TDs, and 9 INTs and completed over 61% of his passes. Those numbers won't set the world on fire, but they were respectable, After that, his production started to decline.

Now the question is why did he start to go in the opposite direction?

So why'd he get dumped for Ryan Tannenhill and become Derek Carr's backup? I mean given what you are saying about Mariotta he should be a definite starter in this league but yet he isn't.

2500 yards
11 TD
8 INT
68%

2600 yards
8 TD
10 INT
65%

The first one is Mariotta's 2018 season (last full season of starting). The second one is Newton last year.

15 INT

Mariotta & Newton in 2017.

You are really overhyping Mariotta.
Mariota should not “be a definite starter” and I am not over hyping him I am saying he is somewhat competent which is more than we currently have. Tannehill and Carr are better than Mariota and multitudes better than newton.
I laugh at your stats because Newton is a shadow of what he was in 2017 and Mariota was a 3rd year guy playing for his 3rd poor OC.
Mariota spend a year with gruden, who like him or not, knows how to teach a an how to play the position and would also get better coaching here than he ever got in Tennessee.
Perhaps the flaws aren’t fixable and the ceiling is low but the bar he has to reach to be better than the QB we saw out there last year is frighteningly low.
Virtually anything is better than repeating the debacle of 2020 at qb.

You are very complementary of mr trubisky
Well hes got a winning record for his career and an almost 2:1 TD/INT ratio inc playoffs. Plus hes been somewhat competent in said playoff games.

He won't win you games but if surrounded by a strong roster he can manage the game.

So net-net very, very average.

That would waste a whole lot of good acquisitions.
Belichick needs to draft a qb in round 1 and that qb needs to be playing by October.
ideally he also finds a better guy to play until then but suffering through another 4-5 games of the suckage that is newton for the sake of continuity is tolerable.

WHEN we draft a an in round 1 having newton here already familiar with the system allows the staff to totallly devote themselves to preparing the rookie. Having to teach the entire system to a different starter at the same time might hold that back. Suck with newton so the suck ends faster.
I know you feel this way. I know a lot of people feel this way.

All that matters is how BB feels about it.

Mariota can throw the ball 8 yards without bouncing it 5 yards short.
Mariota doesn’t lack awareness to the extent of throwing passes into the face mask of a pass rusher right in front of him, or throwing pick 6s on screen passes.
Mariota isn’t indecisive and incapable of reading a defense so that almost no throw is on time.
Mariota will escape the pass rush and either buy time to throw or run for yards instead of just taking a sack.
Mariota doesn’t run like a lumbering overweight fullback.

Mariota certainly is a great qb and has many flaws but newton is god-awful and it would be a tremendous improvement.
I assume you meant "not a great QB". Mariota is a lot closer to average than great.

After watching 20+ years of bb decision making I cannot in my wildest dreams believed he watched the whole play I watched last year and wants more of it.

Mariota is a lot closer to average than great.
Absolutely. He’s probably a below average starter but still a big upgrade.

Is this figure up to date?

The number is likely much less than that, bc The details of several contracts have not been released yet.

Just a guess, but they likely have around $10m left, without doing any restructures.

Come to think of it, I’d do that trade in a second. Get another good receiver and a 10 for a very good aging cornerback coming off an injury who probably wants to get paid again. Sign me up. If only this was real.
Let's make it more exciting Cousin.
Amari Copper and swap spots 10 to 15 for Harry and Gilmore. Still a fair trade. Would like to know the mystery gueests interested in Harry and pick their roster.
All in all still rather have OBJ for Gilmore...done.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that unless KC can right that rocked ship, Cleveland is a top contender for an SB appearance. That team is loaded - but inconsistent.

(PS. Can we please steal Rashad Higgins from them?)
Ahhhh but Rishard resigned with the Browns for a year.

Consistently changing OCs and HCs were not helping him. Some stability and an offense build around his skillset might be exactly what he needs.

Conveniently his skillset overlaps a but with Cam except Mariota does the damage with his legs threatening the edges whereas Cam operates more in the MOF.

But with both you can put together pretty bonkers running formations or force mismatches that open up easy windows in the passing game.

I think it’s pretty clear Bill thinks better of Newton than fans do. I think maybe COVID had a big effect on him and his performance. Hopefully he shows off whatever Bill thinks is there in training camp and the season because it doesn’t look like there’s any other significantly better veterans available. And I really hope Bill trades up and drafts a QB.
I don't think the spread between what BB thinks and what fans think is that huge.

Let's put letter grades on it.

I think overall fans would give Cam a "D" or "D-", BB would give him a "C".

I think fans read too much into BB's comments pumping Cam up.

The thing I think BB really likes is "C" performance on cheap money.

The overall talent level had gotten so low he needed to find someone/anyone who would play on cheap money while he launched the rebuild.

Next year the cap will be going up a lot, we'll have plenty of money to get a FA QB, maybe we'll have a college QB, who knows.

Till then, he's thinking the talent upgrades will at least be enough to "get into the tournament" and then see what happens.

Any interest in a 32 year old geno Atkins?

True, and another question is why TEN could not "fix him".

Reminds me of PHI not being able to "fix" Wentz.

I think the league more or less is afraid of "broken" QBs, and maybe they are right.
