Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

are you 100% sure he will start next year> I'm not. But if he does, I won't be happy either.
If he doesn’t we just pissed money away on a guy who is useless.

yep. 3.5 mil if cut before the season. worse money deals have been made across the league.

That PR and messaging is all nice and well but the reality is that there is only a 3.5M hit the Pats would take if they release Newton before the season starts. If an opportunity comes up to add another vet QB to the roster and have a QB competition it will be on Newton to win that starting job.

The team has so much cap space that there is nothing holding them back from signing another QB at around the same compensation level.
Of course there is.
Newton who expects to be a starter would not have signed here before even checking with any other teams if belichick said he had plans to bring in veterans (and probably even if he says he was drafting a QBs in round 1).
Newton sacrificed his free agency to take this job, he doesn’t do that unless he knows he is expected to be the starter.

For anyone who thinks Cam is just a placeholder that we can get rid of any time, just think about this. Ever since the season ended, there hasn't been anything that came out of the Patriots camp that would suggest they see him as anything other than starting QB. Matter of fact, it is arguable that BB pays more compliment to Cam than he does Brady. BB definitely sees Cam as the starting QB for this team and wants to roll with him for a full season. Cam is not a placeholder, he is the guy, at least for this year.
His contract—at most 25% of which is guaranteed—suggests otherwise.

Huh? You are good with pissing away 3.5 million because bigger mistakes have been made? Great philosophy. Screw up badly as long as you can find some one who screwed up worse.

Cam will not be cut. Bill signed him to start every 16 games even if he throws 30 pick 6.

I think belichick has lost it.
You CANT win with cam Newton.
Belichick witnessed the worst QB in the nfl and says hey let’s do that again.

He has 70 mill of cap room and he chooses to not fix the biggest problem on the team.
This is the worst decision he has ever made by multitudes of degrees.
Maybe you’re right.

I’ve been very curious to why Cam’s play dropped off so much. Go back to his first three games and people here were excited and talking about extending him. I don’t know why he got so much worse, but I will give his coach, who I think is the greatest football coach ever, the benefit of doubt. I don’t make the decisions. All I can do is root for the team or mouth off to friends or to people on a blog. I’m going to root for Cam, Belichick, and the Patriots.

Pathetic!

Newton's a total loser, which makes him a perfect fit for Belichick with his legacy now in freefall. It's going to get very ugly at Gillette. Newton had it very easy in 2020 with no fans in attendance. So when he's making a complete fool of himself next season, drilling balls at the feet of equally incompetent receivers, he is going to get booed out of the stadium. Newton's sidekick - Belichick - is in for some very hard times as well.

"Run it back!! Chapter 2" LOL!! Belichick is seemingly intent on making a complete mocking of his dying career. It's hard to believe the Krafts signed on with this garbage... we are witnessing the sudden collapse of a once formidable franchise.

Go Bucs!!

I somehow missed this wonderful, insightful post. Goodbye

Nice...

...someone's in mid season form. :)

Posters talking about testing free agency.... Question: how do players like Cam and JJ Watt sign now before Free Agency period starts? Is it just players who are not waiting for a 2020 contract to expire?

Watt was a FA already after being released. Cam signed an extension with the team that holds his rights.

check me if I'm wrong but..... it seems to me that the Pats just signed a veteran QB and they are only on the deck to owe him 3;5MM if they move on from him before September, and only slightly more than that if he ends up being a back up, All in a year where they have the 3rd most cap room in the league.

Now IF what I said above is correct than I hope all the hand wringing and breast beating will come to an end. Cam is coming here and will have show that he is markedly better at ALL the aspects of the game to be a starter. Now that all the facts are on the table this deal becomes clear. If Cam can show he can lead the offense to the playoffs, then the Pats will have the bargain of FA. If he again (in TC) shows he remains "short hop" Cam, then he MIGHT be allowed to be a backup and provide lockerroom leadership.

Bottom LINE: this isn't some "impact" signing like I would call the Brown trade/ OR does it signal the the Pats are out of the QB market. If the Pats feel they can upgrade from Cam they can do it without a single tear. . This is a signing is just one small step on the way to fixing what WAS a broken offense

No kidding. Such a terrible move to bring him back.

"Placeholder" doesn't mean "starts zero games", and it doesn't mean "starts 16 games", it means "may start anywhere from zero to 16 games".

Those saying to wait for FAcy to start before judging ignore that Cam was a FA. Why would Bill sign Cam now, and give him a raise in both his base pay ($5M) and his potential incentives ($9M) from last year. Cam ended up making about $4.5M "after his incentives" and graded #23 of QBs. Why reward that performance with a raise?

Don't buy the QB to entice receivers nonsense. Come on, do these receivers and their agents ignore the Pats were almost dead last in passing stats last season?

Obviously, Bill has already looked at the available FA QBs and decided Cam was his best fit, in both value and potential upside.

The only potential "new" QB would be someone getting cut (e.g. Mariota, Jimmy). I don't see JG getting cut. Will he look at Mariota and bring him in to compete with Cam? Possibly. I doubt Mariota will come for Cam's deal, so does Bill pay him a $10-$12M base and take the chance Cam beats him out? That doesn't make any sense to me.

I think Cam is the starter, period. Bill knows what he has in him and McD probably told him he can get him straightened out with a full offseason, OTAs, TC.

The draft is the other possibility, but even if he tries to move up to snatch the #4 or #5 QBs, he won't be starting him over Cam his rookie year. Does he keep Stidham as backup? Who knows.

I saw a theory that this is Bill's genius plan to make fans forget about Brady by exposing them to Cam as a starter two years in a row, so once he finds a new QB, it'll be an improvement from Cam & Bill will look like a hero. Lmao

This thread had me laughing so hard my sides hurt so I had to stop. Lmao

Cam is nothing but pure garbage with an arm that can't throw a ball more than 5 yards - The Jets might have company on the floor of the AFC East this year as Belichick continues his stingy dealings trying to save cap money on a QB that should be bagging groceries at Wal
mart - gonna be back to back long seasons ...is this 1990 again? - I still hold out hope that we get a real QB and dump this P.O.S. by late summer

sounds like we're just like any other team tbo. don't know why we're paying bill 20 mil a year.
We're the 31 again.
Pats suck again.
Lmao

That event was the first time I had ever heard of Roger Clemens’ steroid use, so he’s not completely a hack or, at least, he wasn’t back then.
OT
1995 or 96....2-3 years before the epic McGuire-Sosa HR binge, I'm sitting at a Red Sox spring training game in Jupiter, FL with a buddy whose brother-in-law was a MLB journeyman who spent a few years on the Pirates with Barry Bonds. That day, the Sox sent 2 stars to this road game....Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco....2 massive men. Their teammates that day were all minor leaguers, all tiny humans when compared to these 2 behemoths.
During the National Anthem with the Sox players standing shoulder to shoulder, I said to my friend, "What's wrong with this picture."
He proceeded to illuminate me on the behind the scenes pharmaceuticals used by MLB players and which players, he named a dozen, who were deeply involved. It was a who's who of MLB giants, both hitters and pitchers, from across the entire league. All but one on that list were incriminated in one way or another years later.....including Clemens. The one who never received public scrutiny is a HOFer now.
Turns out my friend's brother-in-law was in tight with Bonds while a Pirate and heard all the stories and saw first hand MLB stars seeking out Bonds for juicin advice with every player's ultimate goal of securing massive future contracts.
Bonds was the pied piper and these superstar rats eagerly followed his lead .
A few years later, a reporter spotted Andro pills in McGuire's locker and the rest is history.
I can't tell you how many arguments I had with my die hard Saux buddies when I would proclaim the Rocket was a juicer long before there was any hint of it. Wish there were futures bets back then.

Note: my buddy did not include Vaughn on his list
