Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

Hopefully a lot of that 14M in incentive based. Personally I hate this contract for the player. They are better off drafting a guy money wise for sure and hoping it works out.

No drafted QB -- yes, not even Lawrence -- would start the season. You still need a vet QB for at least that one redshirt year.

Now whether you like Newton in that role or would have preferred someone else is a different and legitimate topic.

Covid certainly has the potential to cause a bunch of issues, but Cam said he was asymptomatic.

it's the NFL.......of course someone is going to say that........he did look a lot worse post covid

Bill's 1st two roster building moves....
1) trade for an unmotivated LT ($11 mill)
2) sign the worst starting QB in 2020 ($14 mill)

$25 mill spent
Trying to imagine what the next $35 mill in signings will look like

This was always the move that made the most sense. He was going to be the cheapest option with the most continuity for a team likely to draft a QB. Everyone else was either a massive trade or a giant contract that they weren’t worth. Saw it a mile away

Maybe word got out that the niners are sticking with jimmy g. We shall see.

good thing we have Josh MickeyD. he's an offensive genius that puts lesser resources to great purpose

if the move is to def get a young QB to come in and be the starter at some point, then this is the right move without a doubt.......who that is will be interesting to see, but you gotta think they are going after someone in that top 6 or so......assuming the top 3 are out of reach, i'd really like it to be anyone but jones, but that's just me........

25 mil will not be the cap hit.

who cares how much of Kraft's money is spent

the cap hits are certainly not 25mil.....that's all that matters, unless you're Bob's accountant

I think this is the plan:

1. Incentive-heavy deal for Cam that is technically NLTBE and uses very little cap space
2. Cam is a "name" at QB that will massage the uncertainty free agent WRs may have, to at least some extent
3. Keep options open if other QBs (i.e. Garoppolo, Minshew) hit the open market or can be had for cheap post-draft (I think Garoppolo may get cut this week now with NE backing out, this was probably the plan all along regarding their "leaked" interest)
4. If you get a Garoppolo type guy, open QB competition and hope Cam will play nice for 1 year on the bench - maybe he can be a wildcat type option for gadget plays too
5. If nothing else materializes up to draft day, draft a QB to redshirt for 1 year and give Cam every opportunity to have better success with improved pieces around him
6. If Cam doesn't do much better, move on to rookie
7. If Cam is marginally successful, move on to rookie
8. If Cam lights it up (not so likely), extend him a couple years to give the rookie more time to develop

How are we going to get legit FA receivers/TEs to want to sign here next week?

Literally the worst move in Belichick’s Patriot’s career. Unbelievable. Literally ruined my weekend. Just a TERRIBLE waste of cap space. Can you imagine being one of the worst at your job in your career path, and getting a HUGE raise ? Can’t remember being this angry as a Pat’s fan.

Some great dynasties take a long time to get back to even getting to a Super Bowl. Cowboys went from 1978 until 1991, Steelers went from 1979 until 1995, 49ers went from 1994 until 2012, This is the beginning of what’s going to be a LONG wait to return to greatness, and Bill Belichick won’t be around when it happens.
you mean it isnt driving Brady out of Foxboro?

Signing Newton made it imho more likely that we will make a move for someone like e. g. Lance.

There is some overlap between the two so whatever offense you build up via trades/FA this year would transition nicely into the strengths of the young guy once he takes over.

The way we view Cam and the way most of the active players view him seems very different. He is likely to br more of a draw in free agency than someone like Minshew or Mariota would be. Cam the recruiter this offseason may be more effective than Cam the player will be in 2021.

I agree with others who think that he would be a good mentor to Lance, if they can get him.

For heaven's sake, what receiver or TE wants him throwing them the ball? Of course Damien Harris was psyched because he basically has a FB to play with.

I like this move......

Cam gets a full year and a full off season and training camp. I do think the COVID did him in.

It is a realtively cheap move, so does not hamper finding the QB of the future.

Cam's attitude was excellent last year and all the players seem to love him. His play was awful at times, hopefully they can get him an actual TE threat. If they do find the QB of the future, Cam plays a Tayson Hill role in the offense.

Cam has a greater upside than any other QB free agent.

A FB who vultured many td opportunities for Harris.

This is true.
The sentiment on this board that cam can’t be a franchise qb because he dresses funny is most certainly not reflected by the players in the league. Look at Harris being hyped up. Look at how guys like Marshall and ocho and Taylor viewed cam in their interview. Players still respect cam.
I hope that helps. If the offense has any chance of being good enough, they’ll need quite an upgrade- especially if cam is the qb
