[Old 2020 thread] NFL Free Agency/Trade Rumors:

There was cap space to have resigned Brady. What is overlooked is that $13 million was accelerated onto the 20 cap from the 21 cap when Brady’s contract voided at the beginning of the 2020 league year. That $13 million would have been enough to resign Brady with $3 million to spare if they had given him a 4 year contract with a $20 million signing bonus and a $5 million salary. There would have been more than enough space in the 21 and 22 caps to have absorbed the bonus.

Either way neither Brady nor Bill deserve blame because they couldn't agree on how to continue.
According to essentially all reports, the issue was Belichick's unwillingness to offer Brady long term security. So to say that they "couldn't agree" is just a way to cover BB's ass for screwing up by not giving Brady the extension he wanted.

It sounds like he didn’t really want Brady at all. Breer said today he’s always heard Bill wanted to coach a few more years without Brady.

you think brady would have signed for 16 mil, with no weapons available?

Lets say the patriots have 16 million at the start, and dont franchise thuney.

the team has no qb, a hole at guard, a hole at WR 1, 3, no te, a RB that regressed.

Tom wants 25million minimum, with his dead cap hit that means if we go 2 years 25 mil guarenteed in both his cap hit is what around 38 million for 2020?

Okay so we cook the books make his salary vet minimum, the rest is a bonus, that makes his 2020 cap hit somewhere north of 25 million(dead cap + proration of the bonus. this takes up all of the available cap space.

So we've signed our qb. The one that *****ed and complained all season about a lack of weapons, despite the team bring in the best players they could with the resources they had.

We now have TB, no offensive weapons, holes on the o-line. and 1 million in cap space.

Who are you cutting?

Remember this is PRE-COVID-Optout.

Don't use hindsight here. which defense players are you cutting, to make enough cap space for the patriots to go out and sign the best available free agent recievers brady is going to want?

Are you bringing back antonio brown? Because brady is going to complain about that all season again.

Brady leaving wasn't just about the money. He wanted to go to a team where he could pad his stats. There is nothing wrong with it, but call a spade a spade., stop with this ********, the patriots had the money to sign him non-sense. BRADY DIDN'T WANT TO BE ON THIS TEAM

Who said anything about Brady signing for $16m?

Totally disagree with you about Brady. He wanted Belichick to commit to him. END OF STORY.

Brady would have taken up more space than thuney and McCourty. We had about $6 left at one point. It’s math, you can’t lie about it.
Ugh, Ring, they had the room to sign Brady to a reasonable cap number in 2019 by offerring him a 3 year contract and that's without making cuts other contract restructures. In stead they basically used up the cap space to sign the McCourty brothers and tag Thuney.

I think it became apparent to Bill after seeing Brady's attitude during the 2019 season, that he had squeezed the very last drop out of him and no longer had any use for him.

Aside from his field acumen, Brady's value was in being able to hold the other players to BB's standards and apparently he was even used to muscle the players during contract negotiations.

Once he lost Brady, and given his age, Bill dropped him like a bad habit. That's who Bill is, a calculating, cold-blooded hardass. That's the way most folks on this forum want him to be. Which is fine, as long as he keeps winning.

Okay so long story short, he won’t be traded. Thanks for this scoop!

If the Raiders cant trade him they will cut him with no dead money. They are one of the teams in a cap squeeze. That's why he most probably would be available for a mid day 3 pick.

Understand this but if there is a even a 40 percent chance he can be a starter and someone you can win with why even risk it.
I saw on some Raiders blog They have proposed trades with the Patriots as 3 options.
Our 4th for Mariota
Our 5th and d McCourty for Mariota
Our 5th and Adrian Phillips for Mariota
In my opinion we need to hold on to as many good safeties as possible.
So I would go the 4th or a second with a fourth coming back to us.

Signing the franchise tender makes it fully guaranteed and it CAN'T be rescinded. If you rescind it, you lose the player and the full charge goes against your cap.

I mean, Miguel went over this and showed the Patriots had plenty of space, but maybe you know better than Belichick and Miguel.
Despite your appeal to “Miguel said” the patriots were at the cap paying newton $1,000,000. If they paid Brady 20,000,000 as an immutable law of math they would have had to eliminate 19,000,000 elsewhere.

he only has 1 year left on his contract. probably can get him for a 4th or a 5th straight up.

Ok. So if they used the money on Brady then they would have in addition tonal the other players they lost, have lost thuney, both McCourtys and not had money to add players to improve the team.
Free agent losses were a big hit. Adding those 3 make it bigger, and having no money to addd more players means if Brady came back the other 52 players were assured of being a worse team in 2020 than the one that wasn’t championship caliber in 2019.
That has been my point. I never said you couldn’t bring Brady back, I said the team took a step backward, due to the cap in free agency and would have taken further steps back if Brady signed and therefore would surely have been worse than 2019 with a 43 year old QB.

What did you expect would have happened if Brady did come back?

Back in 2018 that's very true, he wanted the 4 yr deal but Bill was a douche and made Brady play on a year to year deal.

Had Bill done the 4 year deal I don't think Brady would have gripped about a lack of weapons. However, since Bill was being a douche Brady decided that if he were to stay that he should get some say.

There was also rumors that Bill was possibly leaving for the Giants. Wouldn't surprise me if Kraft was initially going to pick Brady over Bill until Kraft had a talk with Brady and learned that Brady didn't see himself staying in NE after he was done playing football.

Kraft and Brady have a great relationship. It's very possible that Kraft encouraged Brady to move on as it would be best for his family. It turns out the move to Tampa has been great for his family and even better professionally.

Personally after the 2019 season I wanted Brady to go to Tampa Bay. The amount of disrespect to Brady during that season was terrible.

The best thing for Pats fans was for Brady to win a Superbowl or 2 without Bill and eventually for Bill to win 1 or 2 without Brady. Brady has proven his GOAT status without a doubt, now it's Bill's turn.

Patriots just traded for...
