The Texans as they are right now are not going to win anytime soon, and BoB left them without any draft choices. Caserio might consider two 1sts and 3rd, plus Darnold from the Jete as a way to rebuild. Houston can't make a player wan't to be there.
The player just signed a long-term extension. What he wants only matters if Houston lets it. And, really, if you're the Texans, are you thinking you'll find another Watson with Darnold or either of those first round picks?

No, Darnold wouldn't come even close to Watson's talent, but from where the Texans are right now talent wise with the rest of the roster, what is the point of keeping Watson and still lose.

If keeping Watson to prove a point hurts the team in the long run, move on.

You keep Watson because he's young (26) and on track to being a top QB in the league for years to come. You expect 2021 to be a down year as you clean out the roster, get some picks, and get the cap under control. And you target 2022 as the start of the full overhaul, since you'll have both high draft picks and lots of money to spend.

What you are saying makes sense, but in that time frame Watson and McNair have to change something in their relationship. Billionaire owner vs. talented QB, something has to give.

It's actually completely absurd that teams with guys like Watson, Stafford, Russell, Ryan - or even Carr and Jimmy G for that matter - would be looking to trade them for some other comparable QB. I mean, system experience, past winning, two-sided knowledge is worth a lot. If you're going to look at the GOAT for proof that a new guy can come in and win easily, that is ridiculous. There are often many other issues to why teams haven't gotten over the top yet. It's like the 2005 Colts saying that Manning just isn't the guy because he hasn't led them to a SB yet, and go and trade for Cutler because he has the apparent tangibles. I'm confident every one of those guys is capable of leading a balanced team to the championship. And I'd love any one of them here.

You would prefer to have Watson become a happy camper, but you don't need it. See Brady, Tom and the Patriots 12-4 2019 season.

Yeah but this is the same NFL that fires coaches if they don't win in year 1 and what happens is players never develop properly because they have to learn another system every year.

Teams are desperate and will make desperate moves.

No, I think the Texans are headed for a rebuild with or without Watson. Why not trade him for the draft capital and get a bridge QB in the meantime.

Did Watson screw up by signing a contact with an organization he had doubts about, absolutely, and now he is saying he doesn't wan't to stick around for what the Texans screwed up, the rest of the roster. It's not a good situation.

Because you need either a top shelf QB, an absolutely elite defense, or an incredibly lucky run in order to win even a single Super Bowl, and only the top shelf QB really gives you a chance for sustained opportunity in today's NFL.

Deus, I think we just disagree and have been around here long enough to know that you won't keep bringing your POV, and I have a lot of respect for that, cheers.

Watson is coming off like a spoiled brat now though. He doesn't have any credentials to force anything yet. He's paid like a mega star, he can't whine about organizational hires. He should focus being a leader that gets the most out of his team - like Brady did for half of his seasons. He should also be interested to see what Casserio does for him.

Cheers to you, as well. Have a great day, and a great weekend.

I think he has won all of one playoff game, so yes he is coming off like a brat. The fact that there are probably 10 teams interested in trading for him gives him a bit of leverage. If he plays in 2021 and his numbers fall off it's probably not in his best interest. His market value is likely at it's highest now.

I think you let Watson hold out for a year. Meanwhile you take your down year, clear out the cupboard, get high draft picks for 2022 and spend a year send flowers and chocolates to Watson to convince him to come back in 2022. Anything else and you’re going to end up in the same situation but with a probable worse QB.

Yeah. I'm just trying to look at the situation from the Texans' point of view, and I don't see any upside to getting rid of Watson. As you say, even if the "worst case" scenario happens and Watson holds out a year, you get to keep Watson with the same contract, as he doesn't get credit for the year, and you get higher draft picks to help with the rebuild.

Right. Force him to prove he wants to sit a year. And if he does and you can’t convince him to come back in 2022, trade him for a bunch of picks next year. You’re losing very little by waiting a year, but he loses a lot.

And even if they would be tempted to trade him (for Lawrence plus extra f.e.) id guess most owners would put a lot of pressure on McNairs to stand firm. Dont think they want NFL going banana league like NBA..
