Belichick's end of season speech / excuses to team

I imagine there is a similarly flat speech given at the end of the 12 or so seasons they didn't make the super bowl and had to finish the season without a trophy.

nope only know you by your posts and most are "glass is half empty guy" and being negative is not being objective. so i guess to each his own.
??? Being negative when the situation warrants it is being objective. So is being positive when the situation warrants it.

Agree. But it needs to start with him. He’s the HC and the GM. The buck stops with Bill. It allows him to heap the deserved praise when things are going well, and he needs to accept the criticism when they aren’t. He, as both, has the biggest role in where we are right now as a team - lacking quality depth, lacking youth, a lot of holes on the roster, and no QB. Realistically, the guys we lost to Covid were not the difference between missing the playoffs and competing for the AFC.

The great thing about him is that he isn’t married to one way of doing things. When he sees mistakes he’s made along the way, he has shown that he can and will change his ways. That’s a characteristic of a good leader. He’s had a good start to the offseason in “losing” Caserio to Houston. He needs to build on that now by shirking the “I want to coach guys that I like” mantra he suddenly developed a few years ago and start looking for guys who can play football first, and who are likable (to him) second. If he can get both? Great. Good for him. That’s every leader’s dream. But it’s not realistic to have a team of those guys while still hoping to compete for a championship.
I think you are taking one comment much too literally.

The bulk of the criticism boils down to this

he is isnt media friendly. He is not sitting in 1-1 conv with peter king or boomer esiason and telling how much he loves brady and how wishes he had some things etc etc. He isnt opening up his entire philosophy to everyone.
Andy reid did a car ride with peter king for week or so to show how he works. These things give you a +ve rep in the media.

haha.threads are coming out in droves to kill BB. By sunday we may see "should BB be fired" thread.
Ridicolous.
And if the Pats are stupid enough to do that I'll laugh at the disastrous outcome and those who wanted it to happen. And when I'm done laughing that's when I'll start laughing hysterically.

Not sure I saw this before but Guy just repeated what Belichick told the team in the final meeting. Seems like a bunch of cliched excuses. Yawn. Maybe I was expecting something loftier / better.

Belichick's speech
"You guys have to understand: This was a season that we didn’t predict. We had COVID hit. We had a lot of situations that occurred on our team. There was a lot of new people. We didn’t win games that we want to win. But that doesn’t mean that we just put our tails under our butts and just walk away. That means you strive to be better the following year."
Shrug. I have no problem with any part of that speech at all.

You'd rather hear woe is us poor us?

No other coach id rather have.
Yup. Imagine Bill leaves and McDaniels taking over now with a rebuild ahead of him. Yikes.

Also imagine thinking firing Bill right now is a good idea. :D

The season played out almost exactly as expected. The teams with the best quarterbacks generally made the postseason and even finished in a highly correlated pecking order.

Mahomes
Brady

Rodgers
Allen

Jackson
Brees
Mayfield
Goff

Wilson
Roethlisberger
Smith
Trubisky
Rivers
Tannehill
----
50 feet of crap
----
Cam Newton

FIFY Billy Beane style :)

The Patriots were going nowhere with an overcooked turkey run-first quarterback or a failed, turnover-prone fourth round project. Especially with bottom barrel skill players that won’t help and a defense that’s very far from elite.

Hightower is a really good player; some other opt-outs are also good contributors. It’s unlikely any of them would have made a difference in the win/loss record.

The team didn’t even suffer major injuries or lose a major franchise player. People point to Cam Newton missing one game as some turning point in the season. The funny thing is, the Patriots were only able to obtain Newton for almost nothing because of Covid. They had no cap room and would have been playing Stidham otherwise, who is worse than an offseason-less Newton.

The excuses are ridiculous. The roster has been thinning for years with horrible drafts, and there’s no elite QB to elevate them. The team needs a major rebuild. If Belichick thought this was a contending roster ruined by Covid, the team is in big trouble. But I’m sure he doesn’t actually think they’re just a normal offseason away from putting it together. Probably just an out of context, sensationalized quote. Bill isn’t the type to live in fantasy worlds and shirk responsibility.
Eh I don't know if we need to blow it up and start over. Like I said many times - look at the Rex Ryan Buffalo Bills 3 years ago - they were a .500ish team that had a very good run game, an above average secondary, a weak defensive front, and not much worth talking about in the passing game. Sound familiar? Look at them now. They didn't need to blow it up.

I don't think it's too much to ask for Bill to rebuild this team with the same outcome.

Non Pats fans appreciate BB more than these dozen or so ingrates skulking about this forum. Had this conversation today with a Cowboys, Bucs, Raiders, and a Broncos fan and they thought the idea that Pats fans could possibly have it out for BB is ridiculous.

Then again, they're not spoiled like the whiners here...

I've had similar conversations with other fans.

They think the fans bashing BB are total and complete idiots and would gladly give up their entire drafts for BB.

I think you’re thinking wrong.
So every comment every person ever makes in any conversation is set in stone, black and white and they are bound to it for life?
And preferring to coach players I like is not an all encompassing statement that I want to like them and that matters more than skill. He brought back Jamie Collins and never seemed to like him much, for example. No way he liked Van noys personality for another

Well...its really the boston media which is going to push kraft everyday now.

If BB at manages to turn this around by signing some homerun players guess what the media will say ? "He couldnt have done that for brady?Brady wouldve stayed it if he had made these moves" :)

Unfortunately, those people are idiots too. The truth is somewhere in the middle methinks.
No.

If you are the NYJ or any perennially hopeless team owner that hasn't made the playoffs in decades, you'd gladly give up the entire draft for a proven winner like BB.

The season ticket sales alone justify it.

But would the Pats accept that deal? We'd have the other team's draft plus our own - but McDaniels is head coach and he's sucked everywhere he's been in that position. Yikes.

If the Jets get Watson or Fields they are in better position than us for next year. It's amazing how fast things change in the NFL.
