Diving Deeper Into Jakobi Meyers' Breakout Showing In Patriots' Offense
New England Patriots breakout star wide receiver Jakobi Meyers absorbed a lot of contact Monday night when he caught 12 passes for 169 yards in a 30-27 win over the New York Jets. So, it’s understandable why it looked like Meyers had to peel himself off the turf after catching his 11th pass of...nesn.com
Jules isn't all that athletic either. He makes up for it by developing his strength and technique and using smart well timed aggression. Meyers seems to be picking up on that.Much of Meyer's game is based on Edelman's. I have to confess that I am the last person who would have ever seen that coming. His bag of tricks is eerily like Edelman's, especially the trademark hop step, the stem and re-stemming, stack and "stepping on the defender's toes." Sells a route, leans into the defender the way Edelman does and snaps off.
Meyers has average athleticism and speed but he is working tirelessly on his techniques and will be a solid #2 or 3 option.
It's not really to be marveled at. We did the same thing to Edelman and Welker. It's the nature of receivers who do their best work in the slot to be overlooked, because it's an area where less athletic WRs can thrive on intelligence and good timing, so the role is frequently underappreciated. You'd think the Patriots fans would know better because o the number of talented slot guys we've had over the years that have come into their own with us (Welker/Dola/Jules/Meyers) but some people re slow learners I guessWhy are people saying he's maybe a 2/3 receiver. He's already our best receiver. He just put up a game only matched by WRs in the Patriots Hall of fame. Jakobi should immediately start every game the rest of the year. Bye bye NKeal

If that comes to pass, prepare for 1-2 years of "he's not Edelman or Welker" just as we had a few years of people saying "If you think Edelman's Welker you're just blind. totally different type receivers. (?!?!)"Why are you saying this as if it's not impressive? Would be thrilled if Meyers can replicate what Edelman or Welker did even if he's not a classic slot guy. This offense needs a guy who can reliably move the chains. I don't care about 40-times. On field production, Meyers knows how to sell routes and get open a LOT. Practically speaking, you keep Meyers on the field all offensive snaps as long as he's healthy. He's 50X better than physical specimens like...NKeal Harry.

Brown and Lafell had some production before Bill and Randy Moss on this list is dubious at best but earlier on in our run Bill was able to spot some receivers that could play. Givens was a part time RB/WR at Norte Dame (and outside of Brady and Gronk my favorite Patriot) and we all know about Edelman as a college QB as well and both developed into key pieces on multiple Super Bowl teams. Welker was probably his biggest diamond in the rough move (outside of Brady) he ever made. Not sure why he is unable to draft guys now that can come in and play anymore when he was able to determine who could play in this system earlier on.BB is awesome at finding and identifying highly-productive WRs who prior to his & their arrival here weren't prolific
Troy Brown
Deion Branch
David Givens
Randy Moss (sucked in 2006)
Wes Welker
Julian Edelman
Brandon LaFell
Jakobi Meyers
Uhh Harry was a 1st round pick and has nowhere earned his lofty draft status compared to MANY wide receivers taken in the same draft class. Most notably we passed on DK Metcalf to take Harry and we actually could have taken both with the selections that we had in that year's draft. Instead we traded the right to DK Metcalf to the Seahawks. Metcalf right now is the #2 overall receiver in the NFL in total yards. Hmmm. I don't think it's the fact that NFL receivers don't know how to adjust to New England's system, we just SUCK at evaluating WR talent! You know we can celebrate Meyers without denigrating Harry. Happy birthday to the young man. He made the most of his opportunity!
Also. They're asked to run different routes. Byrd was taking most of the role Harry usually does. But I'm not interested in a long back and forth, so I'll probably just leave this thread.
